If your running back is confirmed inactive, take him out of an active slot before his game locks and replace him with the best eligible player available on your bench or through waivers. Check the player’s status, your league’s lineup rules, and your platform’s deadline first; there is no single replacement or lock time that applies to every league.
1. Confirm that the player is actually inactive
Check current team news and your fantasy platform before changing your lineup. An “Out” designation means the player will not play; “Questionable” means his status is uncertain, while “Doubtful” indicates he is unlikely to play. Labels and their use can vary, so rely on the platform and current reporting rather than treating a questionable designation as confirmation. 2. Check your lineup slot and deadline
Open your roster and identify the slot occupied by the inactive running back. Check which positions can fill it: a standard RB slot generally requires a running back, while a FLEX slot may accept other positions depending on your league settings. ESPN lists RB, WR, and TE as FLEX-eligible, but your league’s settings are authoritative; ESPN’s glossary explains the common abbreviations.

3. Choose a replacement by role and opportunity
Start with eligible players already on your bench
Compare your available bench players who fit the vacant slot. Favor the option with the stronger expected role and opportunity under your league’s scoring and roster settings. A player’s name or a recent high-scoring game alone is not enough to establish that he is the best start.
If needed, look to waivers or free agency
If no bench option makes sense, check whether your league allows an acquisition and whether you have a roster spot. The inactive back’s backup is a logical place to look, but assess whether he is likely to receive regular playing time and steady touches. Consider schedule and matchup as secondary factors after eligibility and expected workload. NFL.com’s in-season roster management guidance recommends checking for a regular role rather than chasing a one-week result; waiver access also depends on league rules and roster limits, as explained in its beginner’s guide to fantasy football.

4. Complete the swap and verify it
- Open your team roster in your fantasy app or website.
- Move the inactive running back out of the active slot.
- Select an eligible bench player, or make an allowed waiver/free-agent move and place that player in the open slot.
- Check that the lineup change saved and that the replacement is still eligible and has not reached his own game lock.
ESPN’s app also offers Quick Lineup, which uses available players with games and prioritizes them by player rankings. That is an ESPN-specific tool, not a substitute for checking your league’s eligibility and lineup settings; see ESPN’s lineup instructions.

If the available information does not support a confident player-specific call, use eligibility, expected role, likely opportunity, and your league’s scoring rules to make the decision rather than assuming there is one universal replacement ranking.
