An NHL player is a late scratch when they are removed from the lineup close to game time and do not play. The term describes the timing and outcome of a lineup change—not its cause or how long the player will be unavailable.
What “late scratch” means
A late scratch is a player who is left out of a game’s lineup shortly before the game begins. They will not play in that game. The player may even have taken part in warmups before being held out; the Florida Panthers used the term for Gustav Forsling after he warmed up but did not play. The Panthers’ notebook describes the situation.

“Late scratch” is best understood as common reporting language for a last-minute lineup change. The examples here do not establish it as a formal NHL rulebook definition or roster designation.

Not necessarily. The phrase alone does not say why the player was removed. An injury may be reported as the reason: an NHL.com status report, for example, described a player as a late scratch after warmups and separately reported an upper-body injury.

But a scratch can also reflect a decision to hold a player out without contact, rather than a newly reported injury diagnosis. Panthers coach Paul Maurice said of Forsling: “He feels pretty good,” then explained that the team wanted to give him another day without banging on him. The Panthers notebook reports his warmup and Maurice’s explanation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does it tell you when the player will return?
No. A late scratch tells you the player did not play in that particular game; it does not establish whether they will be available next time. Look for a separate update about future availability, such as “day to day” or “game-time decision.” In a Panthers preview, Forsling was described as a late scratch due to an upper-body injury before one game and as a game-time decision for the subsequent matchup. The preview treats those as separate status updates.

How to interpret a late-scratch report
- What happened? The player was removed from the lineup close to game time and did not play.
- Why? Use only the reason the team or report actually gives; the term itself is not an injury diagnosis.
- What happens next? Check for a separate update about the next game or the player’s recovery. The scratch alone is not a return forecast.
