“Only one type of memory” can describe a storage medium, a data-retention property, or the flash cells inside a drive. The phrase alone does not tell you how fast, durable, or reliable the device is; first identify which meaning the speaker intends.
What “one type of memory” might mean
In storage discussions, memory type is used for several different distinctions. They are related, but they are not interchangeable.
- Storage medium: the physical technology that holds data, such as semiconductor chips or magnetic platters.
- Retention behavior: whether data remains stored without continuous power—volatile or non-volatile.
- NAND cell type: how many bits a flash-memory cell stores, commonly described as SLC, MLC, TLC, or QLC.
If the phrase appears in a product listing, manual, or diagnostic alert, its surrounding wording—and the exact make and model—are needed to pin down the intended meaning.
Does it mean the device uses one storage medium?
Sometimes. A conventional hard disk drive (HDD) stores data magnetically on rotating platters, while a solid-state drive (SSD) stores data on semiconductor chips and commonly uses flash memory. A hybrid storage device combines storage media rather than relying on just one. These are differences in device architecture, not names for NAND cell density. OpenStax’s memory hierarchy overview describes HDD platters and mechanical movement alongside SSD chip storage; the USPTO’s G06F classification distinguishes magnetic disks, semiconductor storage, and hybrid devices.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Does it mean the memory is volatile or non-volatile?
This is another possible meaning. Volatile memory loses its contents when power is removed; non-volatile memory retains data without continuous power. This describes data retention, not whether a device is an SSD, HDD, or hybrid. Flash is a form of non-volatile memory, while SRAM is an example of volatile memory. Texas Instruments explains the distinction in its Precision Labs memory overview.
Does it mean the drive uses one NAND cell type?
It may refer to the number of bits stored in each NAND flash cell. The labels mean:

| NAND label | Bits stored per cell |
|---|---|
| SLC | 1 |
| MLC | 2 |
| TLC | 3 |
| QLC | 4 |
These are bits-per-cell definitions, not a guarantee that every part of a particular drive uses that cell configuration. A memory device can include different cell types or portions configured differently. So a listing or diagnostic that names TLC, for example, should not automatically be read as proof that every memory area in the device is TLC. TechTarget’s 2024 explanation of non-volatile memory outlines the NAND labels; a 2021 U.S. patent application describes memory subsystems that can use mixed cell types or portions.

Knowing the memory category helps identify what is being described, but the phrase by itself does not establish a device’s speed, endurance, reliability, or suitability for a particular workload. To compare actual drives or NAND implementations, check the exact product specifications for capacity, performance under relevant workloads, endurance, and controller and firmware details. General comparisons are not absolute: Texas Instruments advises readers to check the device datasheet to understand a specific memory device’s behavior.
