What you need before installing
The Black & White Community’s Windows 10/11 setup guide assumes you have the original game disc or a mounted disc image (ISO), plus administrator rights. It recommends installing to the C: drive to avoid common setup problems; that is the guide’s recommendation, not a universal technical requirement.

If you have the original disc but no optical drive, an external USB DVD drive is one way to access it. The guide does not recommend or test a particular model.
Install and patch the game in order
- Install Black & White from the original disc or mounted ISO. Run the installer as administrator, choose an installation location (the guide recommends C:), and do not launch the game when setup finishes.
- Run the official Patch v1.1 installer as administrator.
- Run the official Patch v1.2 installer as administrator.
- Run the unofficial Community Patch v1.42 installer as administrator. The community setup guide says the game will not launch without this patch in its recommended setup.
Do not add official Patch v1.3 to this sequence. The community guide says it is not a gameplay patch; openblack’s documentation identifies it with P5 Power Glove support and describes it as generally unstable. It is separate from the gameplay patch route above.

Restore audio and configure graphics
- If the soundtrack is missing, copy the disc’s Audio folder into the game’s installation folder. If Windows asks whether to merge folders, choose to merge them.
- In the game directory, run the Setup.exe added by the fan patch. Choose your desired resolution and set graphics quality to Maximum Detail if you want the guide’s recommended setting.
- Set runblack.exe to run as administrator, then launch the game. The guide advises against using Windows Compatibility mode.
Install additional mods safely
The Black & White Community downloads archive separates Black & White 1 resources into patches, addons, maps, mods/apps/tools, and skins. It also lists resources related to Creature Isle and Battle of the Gods. Examples include “Black and White Creature Isle Definitive Edition,” described as a mod expansion and listed with a September 18, 2024 update, and “Black & White Plus,” described as a small improvement mod and listed with an August 9, 2024 update. Those dates are archive listing dates, not confirmation that either item works on every Windows configuration.
There is no single installation method established for every archive entry, and the archive landing page does not give installation steps for each item. Before installing a mod:
- Open its individual resource page and check its requirements, version notes, and installation directions.
- Back up your saves and the game files the mod says it will replace or modify.
- Follow that item’s instructions rather than assuming every mod belongs in the same folder or uses the same installer.
The available documentation does not establish a universal mod manager for Black & White.

The community setup guide recommends cleaning up a failed installation before starting again. Its detailed cleanup includes uninstalling the game, deleting the leftover game directory, and removing specified registry keys. Registry changes can remove configuration, so only follow those cleanup directions when you understand which installation you are removing and can identify the listed keys accurately. Consult the guide’s cleanup instructions rather than deleting registry entries by guesswork.

Advanced option: patch an executable with bw1patch
For experienced users, the openblack bw1-patches project offers a command-line alternative to the ready-made installer. It requires Rust 1.86 or newer, builds the bw1patch tool, and applies selected binary patches to an unprotected runblack.exe, producing a patched copy. The project says the retail game normally ships packed with SecuROM; extracting an unprotected executable is outside its scope. Its documentation points users seeking a ready-made build to the Black & White Community’s unofficial patch.
The tool documents fixes for windowed mode, texture and detail settings, landscape draw distance, official add-ons on newer Windows versions, secret creatures, saves redirected to Documents, and widescreen presentation. A separate proxy DLL is documented for resolutions above 2048 pixels; the command-line patcher does not apply that DLL. The tool checks expected bytes before patching, and its documentation advises backing up before an in-place operation. This route offers more control over individual fixes, but it is not required for the standard v1.42 installer setup.

Linux and macOS: different setup paths
On Linux or macOS, openblack’s documentation describes installing the original game through Wine, applying official patches 1.10 and 1.2, and optionally installing unofficial patch 1.42. The unofficial installer needs .NET 2.0 under Wine. openblack uses the original installation’s Audio, Data, and Scripts folders; these project-specific requirements do not establish compatibility for every conventional game mod.

The Black & White Community setup guide says the original Mac port runs only on older PowerPC Macs and is incompatible with modern hardware. That is distinct from running the Windows game through Wine or using the openblack project.
