What Does IP Autoconfiguration Mean? IPv4 and IPv6 Explained

IP autoconfiguration automatically sets an interface address, but IPv6 SLAAC, DHCPv6, and IPv4 link-local configuration work differently and provide different reach.

IP autoconfiguration is the process by which a device automatically sets an IP address on a network interface. It is not one universal protocol: IPv6 devices can use Stateless Address Autoconfiguration (SLAAC), DHCPv6, or manual settings, while IPv4 link-local autoconfiguration can assign an address in the 169.254/16 range when routable configuration is unavailable. These methods differ in how they obtain addresses and what parts of the network those addresses can reach.

What IP autoconfiguration does

An IP address identifies a network interface so it can communicate using Internet Protocol. With autoconfiguration, the device obtains or forms an address automatically rather than relying entirely on a person to enter one. The term describes a category of configuration behavior, not a single protocol.

The phrase can refer to different mechanisms depending on the IP version and network. IPv6 Stateless Address Autoconfiguration (SLAAC) uses information advertised by routers together with information generated by the host. IPv4 link-local configuration selects an address from a reserved range for communication on the same link when routable configuration is unavailable. DHCPv6 is another way IPv6 hosts can obtain address configuration, and it is distinct from SLAAC.

How IPv6 SLAAC works

In broad terms, an IPv6 host creates a link-local address, checks that the address is not already in use, and listens for router advertisements. Those advertisements can provide prefixes that the host may use to form additional addresses, combining the advertised network prefix with locally generated interface information. SLAAC is called stateless because an address-assignment server does not need to keep per-host assignment state for the host to form its address; routers still provide network information through advertisements. The process specified in RFC 4862 applies to host configuration, not router configuration.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6)
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

The IETF’s RFC 8504, “IPv6 Node Requirements,” says: “Hosts may be configured with addresses through a variety of methods, including Stateless Address Autoconfiguration (SLAAC), DHCPv6, or manual configuration.” It also requires IPv6 hosts to support SLAAC.

How IPv4 link-local autoconfiguration works

When routable IPv4 configuration information is unavailable, a device may automatically select an address from 169.254/16, the link-local range defined by RFC 3927. Such an address is intended for communication with other devices on the same physical or logical link. It is not a substitute for a routable IPv4 address and does not provide communication with destinations beyond that link.

How the methods differ

Method IP version and address source Infrastructure and reach
IPv6 SLAAC IPv6; the host forms addresses using locally generated information and prefixes advertised by routers. Requires relevant router advertisements for advertised prefixes. An address by itself does not establish internet reachability.
DHCPv6 IPv6; address configuration is obtained through DHCPv6. Requires DHCPv6 service. It may coexist with SLAAC; using one does not by itself prove the other is absent.
IPv4 link-local autoconfiguration IPv4; the host selects an address from 169.254/16. Supports communication on the same link when routable configuration is unavailable; it does not reach off-link destinations by itself.

IPv6 hosts can also be configured manually. The applicable method depends on the network and its configuration; “autoconfiguration” does not mean every host uses the same mechanism.

Address configuration is not the same as connectivity

Receiving an address does not guarantee that a device also has DNS configuration, a default route, or a working path to the internet. Those are separate parts of network configuration and reachability. A link-local address is specifically limited to its local link, while a prefix-derived IPv6 address still depends on the surrounding network configuration for communication beyond that link.

Why address-conflict checks matter

Automatic address selection must account for the possibility that another device is already using the chosen address. IPv6 autoconfiguration includes Duplicate Address Detection before an address is used, as specified in RFC 4862. IPv4 link-local configuration likewise defines conflict detection and handling in RFC 3927. Autoconfiguration therefore does not mean that a device can safely ignore address uniqueness on its link.

How to interpret the term

  • If the context is IPv6 router advertisements and prefix-based address formation, it usually means SLAAC.
  • If the context is an IPv6 address supplied through a server, the mechanism may be DHCPv6.
  • If an IPv4 interface has a 169.254/16 address after routable configuration is unavailable, it is using IPv4 link-local autoconfiguration.

The related standards are RFC 4862 for IPv6 SLAAC, RFC 8504 for IPv6 host requirements, RFC 3927 for IPv4 link-local configuration, and the earlier conceptual treatment in RFC 1971.
