What Does Intercontinental Exchange Own? A Guide to ICE’s Businesses

ICE owns more than the NYSE: its businesses span exchanges and clearinghouses, fixed-income and market data, mortgage technology, and North American energy markets. A proposed MarketAxess deal was still pending in ICE’s July 2026 announcement.

Intercontinental Exchange (ICE; NYSE: ICE) owns and operates a portfolio of financial-market infrastructure and technology businesses—not just the New York Stock Exchange. Its principal groups are exchanges and clearinghouses, fixed-income and data services, and mortgage technology. ICE NGX is part of its North American energy business. MarketAxess, by contrast, was the subject of a proposed acquisition announced in July 2026; the announcement did not mean ICE already owned it.

What does Intercontinental Exchange do?

ICE operates markets where participants trade financial and commodity products, clearinghouses that manage obligations arising from trades, information and workflow services, and technology used in the U.S. mortgage process. The company describes its portfolio across global markets, fixed-income and data services, and mortgage technology. Its customer groups include financial institutions, traders, issuers, clearing members and data users.

ICE reports that its markets offer more than 12,000 traded products. That is the company’s current figure, not an independently reconciled count. ICE’s customer overview provides the figure and describes the users its businesses serve.

Does ICE own the New York Stock Exchange?

Yes. NYSE is part of ICE’s exchange portfolio and is its best-known cash-equities and listings business. But ICE is not simply a stock exchange: its markets also cover derivatives and other products across energy, agriculture, equities, foreign exchange, metals, interest rates and credit. See ICE’s company overview and its current exchanges and clearing list.

Which exchanges and markets are in ICE’s portfolio?

ICE names a number of distinct markets and venues in its portfolio. They include:

  • ICE Futures Europe, ICE Futures U.S., ICE Futures Singapore and ICE Futures Abu Dhabi.
  • ICE Endex, Creditex, ICE Swap Trade and ICE OTC Energy.
  • ICE NGX, which serves North American energy markets.
  • NYSE, the group’s prominent cash-equities and listings business.

These names represent different markets and product areas; they should not be mistaken for a single exchange operating under one venue or rulebook. ICE’s Exchanges & Clearing page lists its markets.

What do ICE’s clearinghouses do?

An exchange or trading venue facilitates transactions. A clearinghouse performs a separate post-trade role: it manages the obligations between counterparties and helps manage counterparty and settlement risk. ICE says it operates six clearinghouses across the U.S., U.K., Europe, Canada and Singapore:

  • ICE Clear Credit
  • ICE Clear Europe
  • ICE Clear Netherlands
  • ICE NGX
  • ICE Clear Singapore
  • ICE Clear U.S.

The names and geographic coverage are listed on ICE’s Exchanges & Clearing page. Clearinghouses are related to ICE’s trading venues, but they are distinct infrastructure businesses, not simply other names for exchanges.

What are ICE’s fixed-income, data and technology businesses?

ICE’s Fixed Income & Data Services group sells information and professional services used in financial markets. Its offerings include data and analytics, fixed-income execution, indices, regulatory compliance, climate-risk data, desktop and web platforms, APIs, connectivity and consolidated feeds.

ICE says its exchange-data business distributes real-time and historical information from ICE and NYSE exchanges and clearinghouses, along with daily indices and forward pricing curves. It also describes feeds that aggregate hundreds of sources. These are primarily professional and enterprise services, rather than consumer data apps. Details are on ICE’s Fixed Income & Data Services page and Exchange & Market Data page.

What does ICE Mortgage Technology do?

ICE Mortgage Technology provides technology for the U.S. housing-finance lifecycle. ICE describes a workflow that can span initial consumer engagement, loan production, closing, registration and long-term servicing. This is software and technology for mortgage participants; ICE is not itself a mortgage lender. The business is included in ICE’s company overview.

What is ICE NGX?

ICE NGX is an ICE-owned Canadian energy exchange and clearing business headquartered in Calgary. ICE says it acquired NGX in 2017. It provides electronic trading, central counterparty clearing and data services for North American natural gas, electricity and environmental markets.

ICE NGX reports more than 300 direct participants. For 2025, it reported average monthly cleared energy equivalent of approximately 1,200 petajoules and nearly $53 billion in annual cleared-energy notional value. These are ICE NGX figures, not totals for all of ICE. The business and figures are described on the ICE NGX page.

Does ICE own MarketAxess?

Not on the basis of the transaction announcement alone. On July 30, 2026, ICE announced a definitive agreement to acquire MarketAxess Holdings Inc., an electronic fixed-income trading platform. ICE proposed $167 per share in cash and said it expected the deal to close in the first half of 2027, subject to MarketAxess shareholder approval, regulatory clearances and customary closing conditions. The announcement’s board approval did not mean the deal had closed.

ICE’s announcement described MarketAxess as connecting approximately 2,100 institutional investors and broker-dealers across more than 90 countries. Those figures refer to MarketAxess as described in the announcement, not to ICE’s already-owned operations. Because transaction status can change, check for a later update before treating MarketAxess as an ICE business. The announcement is available from ICE’s investor-relations site.

How to understand ICE’s portfolio

The useful distinction is what each business does and who relies on it—not simply how many company names appear under ICE. Its venues enable trading, its clearinghouses manage post-trade obligations and risk, its data and fixed-income services support market information and workflows, and its mortgage business supplies technology for housing finance. This overview covers principal operating businesses rather than a complete legal-entity register.
