What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Choose RAM and storage for the work you actually do, then check that the parts fit your CPU, motherboard, and upgrade plan. RAM holds the data your PC is actively using; storage keeps files and applications when the PC is off. More RAM helps when active workloads outgrow memory, while more storage gives you room for more local files. Buying the highest advertised speed or capacity is not automatically better value.
RAM and storage do different jobs
RAM is short-term, volatile memory. Your PC loads active apps and files from storage into RAM so the processor can work with them quickly; its contents disappear when the PC is powered off. Storage—an SSD or HDD—keeps your operating system, applications, games, and files between sessions. Microsoft describes the relationship in its computer memory guidance.

If a workload needs more working memory than is available, extra RAM can help the PC handle more at once. If you are running out of room for games, media, or projects, extra storage addresses that capacity problem instead. One does not substitute for the other.
How much RAM do I need?
There is no single capacity that suits every PC. Microsoft’s broad consumer guidance recommends 8GB for keeping a device running over the long term and says 16GB or more may suit photo and video editing or other higher-performance projects. Tom’s Hardware’s gaming guide, last updated October 2, 2026, describes 16GB as sufficient for many mainstream and gaming users, with 32GB potentially useful for heavy multitasking and prosumer work. These are starting points for different audiences, not guarantees for every game or professional application.

- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
- VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
- A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
- A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
| Use pattern | Practical starting point | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| General-purpose use | Microsoft recommends 8GB for longer-term general use. | Several demanding apps or many browser tabs open together can change what feels comfortable. |
| Mainstream productivity and gaming | Tom’s Hardware says 16GB remains sufficient for many users. | Check the requirements of the specific games and apps you use, and consider how much you multitask. |
| Heavy multitasking, photo/video editing, or prosumer work | Consider 32GB or more according to workload; Microsoft says 16GB or more may fit editing and high-performance projects. | Large projects and simultaneous applications can increase memory demand. Check application guidance before paying for more capacity. |
Windows 11’s published minimum is 4GB of RAM, but that is an operating-system minimum, not a sensible target for most current multitasking or storage-heavy builds. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 minimum hardware requirements.
Check RAM compatibility before choosing a kit
Start with the motherboard’s specifications and CPU memory support rather than selecting a kit by its headline speed alone. Tom’s Hardware’s RAM buying guide notes that the right kit depends on the platform and workload, and that the benefit of faster memory varies.

- Confirm the supported DDR generation; DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable.
- Check the supported DIMM type, maximum capacity, and number of memory slots.
- Compare the kit’s rated data rate with the memory-speed support of both the CPU and motherboard. Do not assume every platform benefits equally from a higher rate.
- Choose one kit with the capacity you want when practical. Mixing separate kits—even if their labels look similar—can introduce instability.
- Check physical clearance around the CPU cooler and other components, along with the board’s recommended slot arrangement.
If you plan to add RAM later, verify that the board has free slots and that the intended future configuration is supported. A cheaper kit now may not be good value if the upgrade path forces you to replace it.

Estimate the files and software you want to keep on the PC rather than choosing a universal capacity target. Microsoft’s storage guidance notes that light browsing and everyday work may need less local space, large videos and other files need more, and cloud storage can reduce how much must stay on the device.

- List the operating system, applications, and games you expect to install.
- Add the local space you want for photos, videos, downloads, and active project files.
- Allow headroom for new installs and updates instead of planning to fill the drive completely.
- Decide which files genuinely need to stay on the PC. Cloud storage or an external drive can reduce local requirements, but consider access and backup needs.
- Compare the cost of the capacity you need now with the cost and feasibility of adding a second drive later.
Windows 11 lists a storage device of at least 64GB as a minimum requirement. That figure is not a practical capacity recommendation for most current PCs with applications, games, or large personal files.

Microsoft describes SSDs as smaller and faster than HDDs. The right choice depends on what you store and how you access it: an SSD is a common fit for the operating system and frequently used applications, while capacity needs for large local files may make an HDD worth considering. Compare usable capacity, interface, form factor, and cost per usable gigabyte rather than treating “SSD” or “HDD” as a complete buying decision.

- Storage: 1TB SSD – Quick Boot Speeds and Responsive Storage
For gaming, don’t assume the fastest SSD improves frame rates
In an August 8, 2026 Tom’s Hardware test of 11 games, SATA SSD utilization sometimes exceeded 80% at 4K without degrading performance relative to PCIe drives in the reported results. The test intentionally used 16GB of system memory to increase storage pressure. This is bounded editorial testing—not a universal result for file transfers, workstation workloads, DirectStorage cases, or every drive. See Tom’s Hardware’s 11-game SSD speed test.
Verify an M.2 drive’s interface and fit
M.2 describes a physical form factor; it does not by itself establish whether a drive uses SATA or NVMe, which PCIe generation it supports, or whether it fits a particular slot. Before buying, check the motherboard manual for the slot’s supported interface and PCIe generation, drive length, and any lane-sharing or port-disablement behavior. A second slot may share bandwidth or disable another connection depending on the board.
Use price history carefully
RAM prices can change sharply, so compare current offers in your region rather than treating old averages as checkout prices. Tom’s Hardware reported that the approximate US average for a DDR5-5600 2×16GB kit rose from $116 in August 2025 to $528 in August 2026, based on PCPartPicker average-price data. Those are historical reported averages, not current October 2026 quotes or a forecast; see the August 2026 price report.
When comparing kits or drives, calculate the total cost for the capacity you will actually use and include the cost of any adapter, enclosure, or later replacement your plan requires. Paying more for a top speed tier is worthwhile only if the platform supports it and your workload benefits. Capacity, compatibility, and a realistic upgrade path often matter more than the biggest number on the product page.
