“Free” PCB design software can mean either software whose license grants users broad rights to use and modify it, or a vendor’s no-cost tier with limits on eligibility and use. Neither meaning makes the physical circuit boards free. Check the license and tier conditions against your project, then budget separately for fabrication, components, and assembly.
Two different meanings of “free”
In free-software licensing, “free” concerns the rights the license gives users—not merely the price. KiCad describes itself as free, open-source EDA software for schematic capture and PCB layout. Most of its program source code is licensed under GNU GPL version 3 or later, while some components have different terms. See KiCad’s project overview and license information.
A vendor can also offer software at no charge while restricting who qualifies, which projects are allowed, or which features are available. Autodesk Fusion for personal use is an example: Autodesk describes it as a limited offer for qualifying individuals doing home-based, non-commercial work. That is not the same as an unrestricted open-source license.
What to check before choosing a free PCB tool
- License rights: Does the license permit commercial use, modification, and redistribution of the software?
- Eligibility and project scope: Is the no-cost option limited to students, hobbyists, individuals, or non-commercial work? Do employment, company use, or revenue affect eligibility?
- PCB capabilities: Check current limits on electronics features, project size, layers, and collaboration rather than relying on an old review.
- Data and portability: Find out where project files are stored and which import and export formats are available on the tier you qualify for.
- Costs beyond the software: Fabrication, components, assembly, and physical tools are separate expenses.
KiCad: free software, with separate library terms
KiCad’s program license does not automatically determine the license for a designer’s PCB files. KiCad’s libraries use CC-BY-SA 4.0, but the library license includes an exception: using library data in a design does not by itself require that design or its generated files to be licensed under CC-BY-SA. The library collection has separate terms if you redistribute it. KiCad says its library data may be used in commercial, closed, and non-commercial projects; read the library license for the conditions on redistribution.

- Selection of Multi-Sized Proto Boards - 31 pieces double-sided prototype boards of 5 different size to meet your demands when designing your own Arduino kits, electronic experiments and DIY projects. (10 pieces 2*8cm, 10 pieces 3*7cm, 5 pieces 4*6cm, 5 pieces 5*7cm and 1 pieces 7*9cm PCB boards)
- Header Connector - 10 pieces 40 pin male header, 10 pieces 40 pin pitch right angle male headers, 10 pieces 40 pin female header; pitch: 2.54mm, single row and straight connector
- Screw Terminal Block - 8 pieces 5.08-301-2P and 5 pieces 5.08-301-3P ; pitch: 5.08mm, rated voltage: 300V, rated current: 16A
- Jumper caps - 30 pieces standard 2.54mm pin spacing circuit board jumper cap in 6 colors, 5 pieces per color
- Environmental and Elegant Packaging - Compact paper package take little footprint
This distinction matters if you plan to sell a product or keep a design proprietary: consider the software license, the library license, and your own design files as separate things.
Autodesk Fusion personal use: a no-cost tier with conditions
Autodesk’s published Fusion personal-use terms, checked in 2026, describe a limited offering for qualifying individuals working on home-based, non-commercial projects. Eligibility includes annual revenue below $1,000 USD; the offer excludes primary employment and company environments. Autodesk also identifies electronics and PCB designs and import/export as limited. Check the live personal-use comparison and terms against your actual workflow, including the file formats you need.

- 32 Boards In Five Sizes: Choose 4 × 6 cm, 3 × 7 cm, 5 × 7 cm, 2 × 8 cm or 7 × 9 cm boards for compact circuits, controller interfaces, classroom soldering exercises and larger point-to-point builds
- Double-Sided FR4 For Soldered Prototypes: Approximately 1.6 mm FR4 provides a rigid base for permanent electronics builds, while pre-tinned plated-through holes provide solderable connections accessible from both sides
- Standard 2.54 mm Grid Fits Common Through-Hole Parts: Lay out resistors, LEDs, DIP sockets, pin headers, terminal blocks, sensors and jumper wires on a 0.1 in pitch, then create each required connection with soldered leads, bridges or insulated wire
- From Breadboard Test To Permanent Build: Transfer a proven circuit into a compact soldered assembly for sensor nodes, controllers, alarms and STEM demonstrations; corner mounting holes help secure finished boards in enclosures or on panels
- Set Expectations Before Soldering: These are isolated-pad perfboards with no breadboard-style buses or stripboard traces, and the kit does not include components, wire, solder or tools; plan the layout and check continuity before applying power
Autodesk’s personal-use FAQ says the qualifying offer has a three-year term and that users whose revenue exceeds its limit or who use Fusion for commercial projects must convert to a subscription. These are Autodesk’s published conditions, not a general definition of free software, and vendor terms can change. See Autodesk’s personal-use FAQ.
Free design software does not include a free circuit board
PCB software helps you create designs and manufacturing files; a board fabricator makes the physical board. KiCad’s version 7.0 getting-started guide describes plotting manufacturing files and says Gerber is usually the right format for ordering from a fabricator. The software’s ability to produce those files does not include fabrication. Plan separately for boards, components, assembly, and any related physical tools. See the KiCad Getting Started guide.
