Flashing a ROM means writing and installing an Android operating-system image—or related firmware images—to a device’s flash storage. The ROM is the software image or build; flashing is the operation that installs it. The exact partitions and commands involved depend on the device and the image.
What a ROM and flashing mean
In common Android usage, a ROM is an operating-system image or build intended for a device. “Flashing” describes writing that image to the device’s storage. It does not necessarily mean replacing one single system partition: a package may involve several partitions, and the set varies by device and Android layout.
Android’s Fastboot documentation describes Fastboot as a way to install Android and interact with the device bootloader. AOSP’s fastbootd documentation describes a flash command as writing a file to a flash partition, with the device required to be unlocked.
How flashing works
At a high level, the process uses a device-supported mode and tool to write compatible image files to device storage. Fastboot communicates with the bootloader; on some Android configurations, partition work is handled through fastbootd, a userspace fastboot implementation. That is why “flash a ROM” is not one universal command or a fixed list of partitions.

A broad workflow is to obtain an image made for the exact device, enter the supported flashing mode, then follow the manufacturer’s or ROM maintainer’s instructions for installing that package. Google’s documented Pixel and Nexus Fastboot flow, for example, uses Fastboot mode and requires an unlocked bootloader; its whole-system command writes boot, recovery, and system partitions together. That example is not a recipe for other devices.
What to check before flashing
- Device and image match: Use instructions and files for the exact device model and intended build. Do not reuse commands written for another model.
- Bootloader state: Many devices ship with a locked bootloader, which prevents flashing bootloader or device partitions. Unlocking may be required where supported, but some device or carrier configurations do not allow it.
- Data backup: Bootloader unlocking triggers a factory data reset. Back up files before starting.
- Computer connection: The documented Fastboot process connects the device to a workstation. A data-capable cable with the correct connector is relevant if needed; cable, adapter, hub, or port issues can interfere with transfers. A new cable is not inherently required.
Risks and compatibility
A custom operating system has not necessarily undergone the same testing as the original software. AOSP cautions that it may cause the device or apps to stop working properly. Compatibility depends on the particular device and image, so use that image maintainer’s instructions rather than treating a general explanation—or another phone’s commands—as a safe procedure.
