Copy and paste transfers selected text or another supported item to a new location without removing it from where it started. Copy places data on the clipboard; paste inserts or retrieves it at the destination. Cut is the related command for moving content: where an app supports it, cut removes the selection from its original location so you can paste it elsewhere.
What does copy and paste mean?
Copy and paste is a two-step transfer. First, select content and use Copy. The system clipboard temporarily holds a representation of that selection. Then place the insertion point or select the destination and use Paste. The source remains where it was, so copying creates another instance rather than moving the original.
Applications decide which content and destinations support these commands. You may be able to copy text, images, or other items, but available actions vary by app and by the item selected. Microsoft’s clipboard overview describes the clipboard as the intermediary through which applications make data available for another application to retrieve.
How do you copy and paste?
On a Mac
- Select the text or item you want to transfer.
- Choose Edit > Copy, press Command-C, or use the app’s context menu.
- Click or select the destination.
- Choose Edit > Paste or press Command-V. In apps that offer it, Paste and Match Style uses the destination text’s surrounding style.
Apple’s copy-and-paste instructions note that available actions depend on the app and the selected item.

In other apps and on other systems
Keyboard shortcuts are not universal. For example, Visual Studio Code documents Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V for Windows terminals, Cmd-C and Cmd-V for macOS terminals, and Ctrl-Shift-C and Ctrl-Shift-V for Linux terminals. These examples apply to VS Code’s terminal, not every app on those platforms. Check the app’s Edit menu or help if a shortcut behaves differently; menus and context menus are common alternatives.
Where does copied text go?
Copied content goes to the system clipboard, which connects the copy step to the paste step. The clipboard is temporary working storage rather than the original file or document. An app places data on it, and a destination app can retrieve compatible data when you paste. Microsoft’s clipboard operations reference explains this application-to-application process.

Clipboard features differ by operating-system version. Apple says clipboard history is available in macOS Tahoe or later; that does not mean every Mac has the same history feature. Android Developers says Android 13 and later display default feedback when content is copied. That feedback is a version-specific behavior, not a guarantee about every Android device or app.
How is cut different from copy?
Copy leaves the original in place and makes the selection available to paste. Cut is intended to move the selection: where supported, it removes the content from its original location and makes it available to paste elsewhere. If cut is unavailable for an item or location, the app may not support moving it that way.

Is it safe to copy sensitive information?
Use care with passwords, payment details, and other private data. Microsoft Learn warns, “The clipboard should not be used to transfer sensitive data.” Android Developers likewise discusses protecting sensitive copied data, including passwords and credit card data. Clipboard history or syncing can retain or expose copied items beyond the moment you paste, depending on the device and settings, so avoid copying secrets when possible and clear retained clipboard entries if your system provides that option.
