“Cells in frames” has no single established meaning across technology. In a historical ATM-networking context, Cells In Frames (CIF) describes a way to expose ATM functionality through existing Ethernet or Token Ring hardware. In microscopy, the phrase can describe biological cells identified and followed across successive video frames. These are separate uses, not parts of one technique.
What “Cells In Frames” means in ATM networking
A technical dissertation describes Cells In Frames (CIF) as a method for providing a native Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) API to desktop systems using existing physical- and data-link-layer hardware. Examples named in the dissertation are Ethernet v2, IEEE 802.3, and IEEE 802.5 Token Ring network interface cards. The work places CIF in the historical context of using native ATM capabilities alongside IP over ATM. Read the dissertation record.
This is a specific historical networking use, not evidence that CIF is a current, commonly deployed networking feature. The available description does not establish implementation details or present-day support.
What cells and frames mean in microscopy
In microscopy video analysis, a frame is one image in a time sequence, and a cell is a biological object represented in that image. Analysis generally separates two related tasks:

- Segmentation: identifying the pixels or regions belonging to cells in an individual frame.
- Tracking: linking a cell in one frame to the same cell in subsequent frames, so changes or movement can be studied over time.
A 2018 paper describes spatiotemporal cell tracing in terms of segmentation and tracking; a 2016 paper describes locating cells in each video frame before extracting behavior-related features. See the 2018 article and the 2016 article.
Why the phrase needs context
The word cell can refer to an ATM transmission unit or a biological object, while frame can refer to a networking context or a single image in a video sequence. The phrase alone does not establish which domain is meant, and these uses do not share a demonstrated mechanism.

- Ideal for Archiving & Digitizing. toring, preserving, and digitizing old 35mm slides—great for photo restoration, scanning projects, and film preservation.
A DevX glossary page groups networking, cellular geography, webpage layouts, image processing, and biological examples under the label. Because those descriptions are inconsistent and not corroborated as one technical definition, the page is best treated as evidence that the phrase is ambiguous—not as authority for a unified meaning. See the DevX glossary entry. The available evidence also does not establish “Cells in Frames” as a recognized modern web-layout technique.

| Clue | ATM networking | Microscopy video |
|---|---|---|
| Domain | Historical data networking | Biological imaging and video analysis |
| “Cell” refers to | A network transmission unit | A biological object identified in an image |
| “Frame” refers to | A term in the networking source’s data-transport context | One image in a sequence |
| Main task | Providing ATM functionality through existing link hardware | Identifying cells in images and associating them over time |
Look for nearby terms such as ATM, Ethernet, or Token Ring for the networking sense, and microscopy, segmentation, or tracking for the imaging sense. If a source uses only the phrase without context, its intended meaning may remain unclear.
