Blue Owl Capital is a publicly traded alternative asset manager that raises and manages capital for institutional and private-wealth clients. It invests that capital through three platforms—Credit, Real Assets, and GP Strategic Capital—and earns revenue primarily from investment-management fees. Its assets under management (AUM) are investor assets it manages, not revenue earned by the company.

What Blue Owl Capital does

Blue Owl Capital Inc. (NYSE: OWL) manages alternative investments on behalf of investors. It is not simply a private-credit fund: its activities also include real estate and digital infrastructure investing, plus investments in other private-capital managers. The company describes its organization as a “one-firm” model and reports one operating and reportable segment. Its investor overview identifies institutional and private-wealth clients and the three investment platforms.

Blue Owl’s scale figures depend on the reporting date. Its investor-relations overview reported $319 billion in AUM, $190 billion in fee-paying AUM, and $255 billion in permanent capital as of June 30, 2026. Separately, its 2025 Form 10-K reported $307.4 billion in AUM and $187.7 billion in fee-paying AUM as of December 31, 2025. These are point-in-time measures, not revenue. Blue Owl’s 2025 Form 10-K and its investor overview provide the respective figures.

What the three platforms invest in

The platforms differ in what they finance or own, and in the kinds of assets and relationships behind the investment.

Platform What it does Examples of strategies
Credit Provides financing to companies and invests in other credit markets. Direct lending supplies customized financing primarily to upper-middle-market companies. Direct lending, asset-backed and specialty finance, broadly syndicated loans, collateralized loan obligations (CLOs), investment-grade credit, and liquid credit.
Real Assets Invests in real estate and infrastructure or lends against real assets. Net lease real estate, principally single-tenant properties; real estate credit; and digital infrastructure, including data centers and related infrastructure.
GP Strategic Capital Acquires minority equity stakes in private-capital managers and provides those managers with debt financing. Its Business Services Platform also offers strategic support to partner managers. Minority stakes in private-capital managers and manager financing.

For the GP minority-stakes strategy, the 2025 Form 10-K describes revenue sources at the underlying manager level that include a contractually fixed share of management fees, carried interest, and returns on balance-sheet investments. These are distinct from simply lending to a portfolio company or owning a building. The company’s annual filing describes the platforms and their activities.

How Blue Owl earns revenue

Management fees on managed capital

Blue Owl says revenue comes primarily from investment advisory and management agreements. It recognizes management fees over the period in which it performs investment-management services, and generally collects them quarterly. Fee terms vary by product, so the company does not apply one universal percentage to all AUM.

The fee calculation base can differ substantially: regulated credit products typically charge on average gross asset value or net asset value (NAV); CLO fees are based on the par value of collateral; and other credit products may charge on gross or net asset value, investment cost, or, in some cases, uncalled capital. Real-assets fees may be based on committed or called capital during an investment period and later often on unrealized investment cost or NAV. GP minority-stakes fees may be based on committed capital and later on unrealized investment cost. Certain regulated and similarly structured products also earn Part I fees based on net investment income, subject to performance hurdles. These product-specific bases and terms are set out in the 2025 Form 10-K.

Other fees and performance revenues

Other revenue includes administrative, transaction, and other fees. For example, Blue Owl can earn fees for portfolio-company services such as arranging, syndicating, originating, and structuring transactions. It also reports performance revenues, which are separate from ordinary management fees and depend on the relevant products and arrangements.

Undeployed capital is potential, not earned revenue

As of December 31, 2025, Blue Owl reported $28.4 billion of AUM that was not yet paying fees. Management estimated that this capital could produce approximately $326 million in annualized management fees once deployed. That was a stated potential upon deployment, not revenue already realized. Deployment timing and fee generation are not guaranteed. The filing gives the dated figures and qualification.

What the business model means for investors

Blue Owl’s business is to manage investor capital and earn fees and, in some arrangements, performance-related revenue from that activity. Its earnings therefore depend on factors beyond headline AUM: whether assets are fee-paying, the applicable fee base and terms, investment and deployment activity, and performance-related arrangements. A large AUM figure alone does not establish revenue, earnings, or future returns.

The company’s private-market strategies and managed products also involve market, credit, valuation, liquidity, and deployment risks. Historical returns for a product do not predict future returns. Blue Owl’s annual filing discusses these risks and cautions against treating past product performance as a forecast.
