Blackstone reports a much larger and broader platform; Blue Owl centers on three principal platforms. Which fits depends first on whether you mean the companies’ publicly traded shares or a particular fund they manage, and then on that investment’s valuation, costs, liquidity, risks and performance.
Start with the investment you would actually own
“Blue Owl vs. Blackstone” can mean a comparison between two companies or between particular investment products managed by them. Those are not interchangeable comparisons.

Company shares
Blue Owl Capital Inc. (NYSE: OWL) and Blackstone common shares are public-company equity investments. Their results depend on factors including the firms’ businesses and finances, share prices and market valuations. A manager’s assets under management (AUM) do not, by themselves, show whether its shares are attractively priced or likely to outperform.

A fund, business development company (BDC), non-traded REIT, interval fund or private partnership is a separate investment with its own portfolio, fees, liquidity, eligibility rules and risks. Blackstone lists registered products including BXMIX, BMACX and BSL; its private-wealth materials say they are not an offer to sell and warn that investors can lose capital. Those examples do not establish uniform terms across Blackstone products, much less across products offered by either manager. Review the governing documents for the specific vehicle.

How their reported businesses compare
| Measure | Blue Owl | Blackstone |
|---|---|---|
| Reported total AUM, June 30, 2026 | $319 billion, reported by Blue Owl Capital | $1.3 trillion, reported by Blackstone |
| Reported platform structure | Credit, Real Assets and GP Strategic Capital | Real estate, private equity, credit, infrastructure, life sciences, growth equity, secondaries and hedge funds |
| Additional reported figure, June 30, 2026 | $190.6 billion in fee-paying AUM and $31.1 billion in AUM not yet paying fees | $547 billion in combined credit and insurance platform AUM; $109 billion in investor capital under management at BXMA |
The total-AUM figures put Blackstone at roughly four times Blue Owl’s reported scale as of June 30, 2026. They are company-reported measures, not matched measures of investment performance or shareholder value. Blue Owl’s filing distinguishes fee-paying AUM from total AUM; neither the $190.6 billion nor the $31.1 billion is a substitute for the $319 billion total. Blackstone’s credit-and-insurance and BXMA figures describe parts of its business, not additional totals to add to its $1.3 trillion.
What the strategy mix means for a portfolio
Blue Owl: three principal platforms
Blue Owl describes its business through Credit, Real Assets and GP Strategic Capital. The platform labels indicate areas of focus, but they do not tell you the asset mix, fees, liquidity or risk of a specific product. For example, Blue Owl Capital Corporation (NYSE: OBDC) is a particular Blue Owl-managed BDC that provides direct lending to U.S. middle-market businesses. Its Q2 2026 investor information described 229 portfolio companies and predominantly senior-secured investments. OBDC is one vehicle, not a proxy for every Blue Owl strategy.
Blackstone: a wider set of strategies
Blackstone lists strategies across real estate, private equity, credit, infrastructure, life sciences, growth equity, secondaries and hedge funds. That breadth may give investors more types of products to investigate under one manager’s name, but it does not make any one product diversified, liquid or suitable by default. Judge the actual holdings and terms of the vehicle you are considering.
Compare the specific investment on these points
- Instrument: Identify whether you are comparing OWL or Blackstone shares, or a fund or other vehicle. Shareholders own equity in the management company; fund investors own an interest governed by that product’s documents.
- Underlying exposure: Check the asset classes, holdings, concentration and investment approach of the specific product. The firms’ platform descriptions are not a substitute for its portfolio information.
- Liquidity and eligibility: Confirm how and when you can invest or withdraw, whether redemptions can be limited, and who is eligible. The evidence here does not establish one set of terms for either firm’s products.
- Fees and leverage: Use the relevant prospectus, offering documents and reports to understand all charges and borrowing. Blue Owl says its management fees are generally based on fee-paying AUM; that company-level description does not establish an investor’s full fee burden for a particular fund.
- Valuation and performance: For company shares, compare synchronized market prices, valuation measures and total returns. For funds, compare net returns over the same periods and alongside comparable risk and liquidity. The figures above do not establish an apples-to-apples winner on either valuation or returns.
- Portfolio objective: Decide whether the intended role is income, growth, diversification or capital preservation, then assess whether the specific investment’s risks and terms suit that role. Blackstone states returns and capital preservation as objectives for clients; an objective is not a guaranteed result.
What the dated company figures can—and cannot—tell you
Blue Owl declared a quarterly dividend of $0.23 per Class A share in its July 30, 2026 release for Q2 2026, payable August 27, 2026 to holders of record August 13, 2026. That dated declaration is not a current yield comparison and does not establish a future dividend. Dividend decisions can change.
Blue Owl’s co-CEOs said in the same July 30, 2026 results release that the company had reached $319 billion of AUM and described its growth since listing. Blackstone CEO Stephen A. Schwarzman described the firm’s relationships with investors on its institutional page. These are leadership statements, not independent evidence of investment quality, future performance or suitability.
