“Apple AI chip” is informal shorthand, not the official name of a single Apple product. It can refer to an Apple silicon chip as a whole, its Neural Engine, or the combination of CPU, GPU and Neural Engine resources that can run AI workloads.
What the term “Apple AI chip” refers to
Apple’s Neural Engine is a specialized AI-acceleration block inside a larger chip. In its May 7, 2024 M4 announcement, Apple called it “an IP block in the chip dedicated to the acceleration of AI workloads.” The Neural Engine is therefore not the name of the whole chip, and “Apple AI chip” is not a formal standalone product name.
In practice, the phrase may mean the Apple silicon system-on-a-chip (SoC), the Neural Engine specifically, or the chip’s combined AI-computing resources. Which meaning is intended depends on the context.
How Apple silicon handles AI workloads
Apple’s developer documentation describes model inference using the CPU, GPU and Neural Engine. These are distinct compute units; software and the model determine which units are used and how the work is divided. Recent Apple chips can also include Neural Accelerators within the GPU.

That distinction matters: the Neural Engine is one component, not necessarily the sole processor involved in an AI task. Apple documents local model inference and fine-tuning on Mac, but support and performance depend on factors such as the model, software framework, memory and device configuration. A capability described by Apple does not mean every model will run on every Mac or run at the same speed.
Current Apple chip example: M6
In an announcement dated August 25, 2026, Apple introduced M6 as a 2 nm chip with a Dual 16-core Neural Engine and a GPU that includes Neural Accelerators. Apple said M6 is used in the new Mac mini. These are Apple’s product specifications, not independent performance-test results.

The M6 announcement also described M5 Ultra as an M-series SoC for pro and AI workloads, with a 32-core Neural Engine and GPU Neural Accelerators. Those specifications illustrate why “Apple AI chip” can describe more than one chip generation and configuration.
What Apple’s M4 performance figure means
Apple said in its May 7, 2024 M4 announcement that the M4 Neural Engine could perform up to 38 trillion operations per second. That maximum is a vendor-stated figure for the M4 Neural Engine. It is not an M6 specification, an independent benchmark of complete AI tasks, or a direct measure of how quickly an application will run.

How to compare Apple chips for AI
For a practical comparison, look beyond the label or a single core count. Consider the chip generation, available compute units, memory configuration, intended workload and the specific device containing the chip. A peak-operations figure alone does not establish which computer will perform better for a particular model or application; the cited Apple sources provide product descriptions rather than independent head-to-head tests.

- Chip and generation: Identify the exact Apple silicon model rather than relying on the generic phrase “AI chip.”
- Compute resources: Check the Neural Engine and GPU details, including whether the GPU has Neural Accelerators.
- Memory and configuration: Confirm the device configuration against the models and workloads you expect to use.
- Software support: Verify that the relevant framework and application support the model and device.
