Whether app progress and settings come back depends on whether eligible Cloud Backup data exists and is restorable.
What a factory reset deletes
Meta describes a factory reset as removing data from the headset, but its help page does not give a complete, file-by-file inventory of everything erased. Treat it as a wipe of the headset’s local state: after the reset, you must set up the device again. See Meta’s factory-reset instructions for the available reset methods.

A reset is a device action, not an account-deletion request. Meta’s instructions for remote reset describe removing data from the headset through the account’s device list; they do not say that this deletes the Meta account or its purchase history.
What happens to games, saves, and settings?
Local app data is removed by a reset. Progress and settings can return only when an eligible Cloud Backup exists and the app supports restoring it. Meta says Cloud Backup can back up device app data, including progress and settings, for participating apps. When an app is installed, the latest backup is restored automatically; users can also select or manually restore backups from the Cloud Backups page.

Cloud Backup is not guaranteed for every app or every piece of app data. Developers may opt out, the feature can be disabled, and data must meet Meta’s backup requirements and be stored in supported locations. A reset cannot recover data that was never backed up or is missing from the backup.
Check Cloud Backup before resetting
- On the headset, open the Cloud Backup panel in Settings.
- Check that the apps whose progress matters have backups, and review each backup’s timestamp.
- Where the option is available, manually trigger a backup before resetting. Meta documents scheduled and app-exit backups as well as this manual option.
- After resetting and setting up the headset, reinstall the relevant app and allow its eligible backup to restore; use the Cloud Backups page to select or manually restore a backup if needed.
Does a reset delete cloud saves?
Do not treat a factory reset as a way to erase cloud backups. Meta distinguishes local app data from cloud backup data: uninstalling an app removes its local data, but does not delete its cloud backup. Deleting cloud saves is a separate action, and Meta says cloud deletion is permanent and may require removing backups across devices to eliminate all copies. See Meta’s Cloud Backup guidance.

Cloud Storage V2 is no longer available
Older advice about Meta’s Cloud Storage V2 does not describe the current service. Meta says Cloud Storage V2 shut down on January 31, 2025. Data that had not been migrated by that deadline became inaccessible and was eventually deleted. The replacement is Cloud Backup, but Meta notes that apps opting out of Cloud Backup and unsupported legacy cases may rely on local data. See Meta Horizon OS Developers’ Cloud Storage documentation.
Ways to reset a Quest headset
Meta documents three routes. Menu wording can vary, and Meta’s help page notes that remote reset may not appear on software versions that do not support it.

- Paired headset: initiate the reset through the Meta Horizon app.
- Headset not paired: start the reset from the headset itself.
- Remote reset: request it through the device settings in your Meta account. The reset takes effect the next time the headset comes online.
