The tackle blocks defenders to protect the quarterback on passing plays and helps create or preserve running lanes on rushing plays. The specific defender and technique depend on the play’s design.
Where the tackle lines up
A standard offensive line has two tackles, one at each end, with a guard just inside each tackle. Together with the center and guards, they form the five-man offensive line. The NFL’s football terms glossary describes tackles as the outside linemen, responsible for protecting the passer and helping open lanes for runners.

A tight end may line up next to a tackle and add a blocker on some plays, or release into a route on others. That changes the formation and blocking picture, but it does not change the tackle’s basic role as an offensive blocker.
What a tackle does in pass protection
On a passing play, a tackle’s central job is to block a pass rusher approaching from the edge so the quarterback has room to operate. The tackle does not simply stand in front of a defender: the blocker must respond to the rusher’s speed, angle, and moves while carrying out the protection called for the play. The NFL’s pass-protection explainer highlights the footwork and balance needed to handle speed to the edge and an inside move.

- Single
A good base matters. If a tackle’s feet and body position leave the blocker off balance, strength alone may not be enough to recover when a rusher changes direction. A tackle’s assignment also fits into the unit’s overall protection; another lineman, a tight end, or a running back may be involved, depending on the formation and scheme. There is no single protection arrangement that applies to every play.
What a tackle does in run blocking
On a run play, tackles block defenders to help create a path for the ball carrier or keep a defender from closing the intended lane. The assignment varies with the run concept: a tackle may move laterally with the line, block down, protect the back side of the play, or move through a gap. These are coordinated assignments, not a choice made independently by the tackle.

Zone
In a zone concept, linemen move laterally in the direction of the play and work together toward defenders. Depending on the design, a backside tackle may be assigned to block the backside defensive end. The exact target and movement depend on the call.

In one power example described by NFL.com’s run-blocking explainer, the backside tackle steps inside and hinges outside to protect the back side while other linemen block down and a guard pulls. It is one possible assignment, not a fixed rule for all power plays.

Counter
Counter concepts can ask a tackle to block down or wrap through the hole as part of the play’s movement. The tackle has to track a teammate’s path and react to the defense. The NFL.com examples illustrate why run blocking calls for awareness and mobility as well as strength.
Skills and technique that help a tackle
NFL.com’s draft analysis of offensive tackles identifies size, strength, balance, body control, and quickness as useful traits against athletic pass rushers. In practice, those traits work together: footwork helps a tackle stay positioned, balance helps absorb or recover from contact, and quickness helps respond to a rush or move laterally on a run play.

- Strength and body control: Help the blocker maintain position against a defender without losing balance.
- Footwork and a stable base: Help the tackle adjust to edge speed and defend against a rusher changing direction.
- Awareness and reaction: Matter when a run concept asks the tackle to coordinate with teammates, read a defender, or move to a new blocking angle.
The NFL’s Way to Play coaching resource frames player development around stance, approach, and finish. It emphasizes posture, space and speed, and choosing drills that fit the skill being taught. That is coaching guidance, not a list of formal roster-evaluation requirements; it also advises coaches to avoid using the head or helmet as a technique cue.

How left tackle differs from right tackle
Left and right tackles line up on opposite ends of the line and share the same broad responsibilities: pass protection and run blocking. Their specific assignment comes from the play, not from a rule that one side only blocks for the run or the other only protects the passer.

The left tackle is often discussed as the blind-side protector for a right-handed quarterback, who typically faces away from that side while preparing to throw. NFL.com’s draft analysis notes that most quarterbacks are right-handed and explains the traditional emphasis on protecting that side. This is useful context, not a guarantee that the left tackle is always the best blocker or that the left side is the blind side for every quarterback. Quarterback handedness and the play both matter.
What an offensive tackle does not do
An offensive tackle’s defining job is blocking. The position is not the same as a defensive tackle, and the tackle is not assigned to tackle the ball carrier. Nor does every play require the offensive tackle to block one defender alone: the protection or run scheme determines how the blockers work together.
