What Does an Android TV Launcher Change—and Can It Replace the Stock Home Screen?

A launcher changes the home interface, but installing one does not guarantee that it can replace stock Home or handle the remote’s Home button. Check model-specific support first.

An Android TV launcher controls the home interface: how apps and supported content are arranged and presented. A third-party launcher can replace stock Home in principle, but Android’s platform support does not guarantee that every TV or streaming device lets you choose one or sends the remote’s Home button to it. Editing stock Home is a separate, more widely available option.

What an Android TV launcher changes

A launcher is the app that provides the device’s home interface. It is the screen you return to when you press Home, and it can determine how that screen presents apps and other content the launcher supports. A different launcher can therefore change the way you reach and organize apps and, depending on its features, the content or shortcuts shown alongside them.

The exact changes depend on both the launcher and the TV or streaming device. A replacement does not automatically control every part of the television experience: available information does not establish that custom launchers universally preserve stock recommendations, voice or search integrations, manufacturer tabs, or other device features. Treat these as compatibility questions to verify for your particular model, not as guaranteed features of any launcher.

What it does not necessarily change

Installing or choosing a launcher is not the same as replacing the operating system or changing the TV’s underlying platform. Nor does the word “launcher” mean that every app visible on the screen has become the system home app. An app can be available to launch from the TV interface without serving as the destination for the Home button.

It also helps to distinguish the home interface from the system-wide capabilities around it. A launcher can present apps and content it supports, but available information does not establish that choosing one transfers every stock-screen feature or service into the new interface. For example, do not assume that stock recommendations, voice search, or manufacturer-specific tabs will appear or behave identically just because a new home screen opens.

Customizing stock Home is not replacing it

Android TV’s built-in home screen can present apps, shows in progress, suggested content, personalized recommendations, and interface tabs such as Home, Discover, Apps, and Settings. Google’s Android TV Help describes options for changing channel rows and preview or recommendation settings. Where a device exposes those options, you can personalize stock Home while continuing to use the built-in launcher.

That distinction matters when troubleshooting or deciding what you want. Rearranging rows or changing recommendations changes the stock screen’s presentation; it does not select another app as the home experience. Conversely, installing a third-party launcher does not, by itself, prove that the device has made it the default or that Home will open it.

In practical terms, ask whether you want to change the content and layout of the built-in screen, or whether you want a different app to supply the screen itself. The first is stock-Home customization. The second is launcher replacement, and it also raises a separate question: whether the device routes the remote’s Home button to that app.

When customizing stock Home is enough

  • You want to change the visible rows, previews, or recommendation settings that your device offers.
  • You are content with the stock screen and want its built-in interface and integrations to remain in use.
  • You cannot find a supported way on your model to select a different home app.

Settings are not identical across Android TVs. Google explicitly notes that not all devices expose the same home-screen settings, so a missing option is not necessarily a fault or something a launcher can add to the stock interface.

Google’s descriptions also show that available tabs and features can vary with the device, region, account mode, and availability. Some devices in some regions may show a manufacturer tab. If a menu or setting shown in someone else’s instructions is absent on your TV, that difference may reflect the product or software rather than a problem you can fix by installing a different launcher.

Can a third-party launcher replace stock Home?

At the Android platform level, yes: the Android Open Source Project’s Compatibility Definition Document, section 3.8.1, says Android includes a launcher and supports third-party applications replacing the device launcher. That is a platform capability, not a promise that each consumer TV provides a universal launcher picker, offers the same configuration, or handles the Home button identically.

Whether a launcher becomes the effective home screen depends on the device implementation, firmware, and launcher. A device might expose a normal way to choose a home app; another might continue opening stock Home when you press the remote’s Home button. A method that works on one model or software version should not be assumed to work on another.

  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

So there are two separate tests for anyone asking how to change the default launcher or replace the stock home screen: can the device select the third-party app as its home app, and does pressing Home actually open it? A launcher that opens when selected manually has passed neither test automatically. Check the device’s settings and manufacturer documentation, then test the remote behavior on the exact device.

Check these points before changing anything

  1. Identify the device precisely. Note the TV or streaming-device model and its installed software version. Look for instructions from that manufacturer that apply to that exact combination.
  2. Separate app installation from default-home selection. Confirm whether the device offers a setting or picker for the home app. Seeing a launcher in an apps list or being able to open it manually does not establish that it will handle Home.
  3. Test the remote behavior. If the device lets you select a launcher, check what happens when you press Home and whether that behavior persists after a restart. Do not infer reliable Home-button behavior from a successful manual launch.
  4. Check the features you rely on. If stock recommendations, voice or search functions, manufacturer tabs, or other integrations matter to you, verify their behavior with the proposed launcher and method on your device.
  5. Understand how to undo the change. Prefer a normal, reversible home-app choice when one is available. Before using a workaround, make sure you know how to restore stock Home on that model.

These checks are also a useful comparison framework if you are choosing between launchers or methods. Compare Home-button reliability, compatibility with your exact device and firmware, usability with the supplied remote, the stock features you may lose or change, and how easily you can reverse the setup. Available information does not provide a universal launcher ranking or establish that every replacement preserves those features, so evaluate the actual combination rather than relying on a general claim.

Why an app appearing on the TV does not make it the launcher

TV app visibility and system-home replacement are separate questions. Android TV developer guidance explains that an app needs the CATEGORY_LEANBACK_LAUNCHER intent filter to appear to TV users in the TV user interface. That guidance concerns whether an app is discoverable as a TV app; it does not say that the app becomes the system launcher or receives the Home button.

So if an app is missing from the TV’s app interface, that does not by itself answer whether the device supports replacing stock Home. And if the app is visible there, that does not prove it can replace stock Home. Check the device’s home-app controls and the launcher’s documented support separately.

This distinction is useful when an app seems to have installed successfully but cannot be found in the TV’s app area. Discoverability as a TV app and eligibility to act as the device’s home interface are different questions. The presence or absence of an app icon should not be treated as a substitute for checking home-app selection or testing Home-button behavior.

Android TV and Google TV do not guarantee identical results

Products using Android TV or Google TV can differ in their interface and available capabilities. Google’s descriptions note that tabs and features may depend on the device, region, account mode, and availability; a manufacturer tab, for example, may appear only on certain devices in certain regions. These differences are another reason not to treat a menu path, screenshot, or workaround from a different device as universal.

Use documentation for the exact product and software version rather than assuming that instructions for one device apply to all devices using the same platform name. If the manufacturer’s information does not confirm a home-app choice or Home-button behavior, regard that behavior as unverified until you can test it safely.

The platform statement that Android supports third-party launchers and the product-level question of how a particular TV behaves are not contradictory. The former describes a platform capability; the latter depends on how the manufacturer implements the interface and firmware. Google TV and Android TV product descriptions also show variation in tabs and capabilities, so the platform name alone is not enough to predict the available settings.

Workarounds can have trade-offs

Some launcher projects document device-specific approaches beyond choosing an app in settings. LTvLauncher’s project documentation, for example, describes a settings route, accessibility-based Home-button handling, key remapping, and disabling a system package through ADB. Those are that project’s instructions, not general Android TV procedures.

In particular, disabling a system package is different from selecting a new home app through a normal setting. The project itself warns that Google TV may continue to prioritize stock Home and that disabling system packages carries risks. ADB package commands or key-remapping steps should not be copied across devices without confirmation that they apply to the exact model and firmware.

Accessibility-based interception and key remapping also should not be presented as equivalent to a built-in home-app choice. They are workaround approaches documented by a particular project, and their applicability depends on the device. Before considering one, check whether the instructions are current for your model and software version, what they change, and how to recover if the remote no longer opens the screen you expect. Available information does not establish one universal recovery procedure, so use manufacturer- or project-specific instructions rather than guessing.

Use this decision rule

  • A normal home-app picker is available: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, then test Home and restart behavior.
  • No picker is documented: You can still customize stock Home where the device allows it, but do not assume that installing a launcher changes Home-button behavior.
  • A workaround is proposed: Check its model and version requirements, possible side effects, and recovery steps first. If those details are not established for your device, do not treat the workaround as a safe, universal fix.

What to expect after a successful replacement

If the device does allow a third-party launcher to handle Home, the immediate visible change is the home interface supplied by that launcher. The launcher can only present the apps and content it supports, and the device may retain behavior or interface elements outside the launcher’s control. Available information does not establish that every stock feature will carry over or that all integrations will behave the same way.

For that reason, judge success by the tasks you actually need: whether Home opens the chosen interface, whether the supplied remote can navigate it, whether the behavior survives a restart, and whether any important stock features still work. If one of those outcomes is essential, verify it on your own device before relying on a workaround or treating the change as complete.

A useful test is not just whether the new screen appears once. Confirm the behavior from the remote’s Home button, navigate with the supplied D-pad and controls, and check again after restarting. Then check the specific features you rely on, such as recommendations or voice and search functions. These checks do not guarantee every future software update will behave the same way, but they help establish what the current device and firmware actually do.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change the default launcher on Android TV?

First check whether your exact TV or streaming device offers a home-app picker or another manufacturer-documented way to choose a launcher. Installing an app or opening it manually is not the same as selecting it as the home app. After a supported selection, test whether the remote’s Home button opens it and whether that continues after a restart.

Will installing a launcher make the Home button open it?

Not necessarily. Android supports third-party launcher replacement at the platform level, but the device implementation and firmware determine whether a particular launcher is selected and how Home behaves. Verify this on your model rather than assuming an app installation changes the button.

Can I change the Android TV home screen without replacing the launcher?

Often, you can change the stock screen’s rows, previews, or recommendation settings where your device provides those controls. That personalizes stock Home; it does not make another app the system home screen. Google notes that available home-screen settings vary by device.

Why is a launcher not visible in the TV apps interface?

TV app discoverability is separate from launcher replacement. Android TV developer guidance says apps need the CATEGORY_LEANBACK_LAUNCHER intent filter to appear to TV users in the TV interface. That requirement does not establish whether the app can handle Home, and a visible app is not automatically the system launcher.

Are Home-button workarounds safe on every Android TV?

No universal safety or compatibility guarantee is established. Project-specific methods can include accessibility-based handling, key remapping, or disabling a system package, and the project documentation warns that Google TV may prioritize stock Home and that disabling system packages carries risks. Confirm exact model and software support, side effects, and recovery steps before using a workaround.

Bottom line

An Android TV launcher changes the home interface and the way supported apps or content are presented. Android supports third-party launcher replacement at the platform level, but the manufacturer’s implementation determines whether you can make one the effective Home screen and what the remote’s Home button does. Customizing stock Home is not replacement; verify device-specific support before using workarounds, especially those that intercept Home or disable system packages.
