Before deleting: decide whether you need an export
Account deletion is not the same as downloading your information. If you may want a copy of your data, request an export and retrieve the file before deleting the account. Character.AI’s current help article estimates that preparing an export may take 3–4 weeks. When the export is ready, the company says it will email a download link to the address associated with the account; that link remains valid for 7 days after the email is sent. These are Character.AI’s service estimates, not a guarantee that a particular request will be ready on a specific date. Character.AI’s export instructions were updated October 8, 2026.

Because deletion cannot be reversed, do not assume a pending export will still be available after deleting the account. The help articles do not promise that it will. Request the export, wait for the email, download the file while its link is active, and confirm that you have the file before continuing.

This makes the practical choice a sequence, not a choice between two equivalent buttons. Export first if you want a copy, and allow for the stated 3–4-week estimate. Delete immediately only if you have decided you do not need an export or already have the information you want to keep. The sources do not say that a request still being processed is guaranteed to finish after an account is deleted.

How to request and download your Character.AI data
On the website
- Sign in to Character.AI.
- Open Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Export Data.
- Submit the export request and allow for the stated processing estimate of 3–4 weeks.
- Check the email address associated with the account for the download link. Download the export within 7 days of the email being sent.
In the mobile app
- Open the app and go to Profile → Settings → Legal & Privacy → Export Data.
- Submit the request and wait for the email from Character.AI.
- Download the file from the emailed link within its 7-day validity period.
The website and app paths use different labels, so follow the instructions for the platform you are using. If the labels have changed, look in the account or privacy settings for the export control. Character.AI’s official export article has the current paths.
The address matters because the export link is sent to the email associated with the account. Character.AI says users cannot currently change that email address. If you no longer have access to it, the cited help material does not describe an alternate delivery method; contact the company through its applicable support or privacy channels rather than assuming the link can be redirected. The export request is for obtaining a copy of information and does not itself close the account or make a deletion request.
How to delete your account
Once you have saved anything you want to keep, use the path for your platform. Character.AI’s help center states that account deletion is permanent and cannot be reversed. Its deletion instructions were updated October 3, 2024.
On the website
- Sign in to Character.AI.
- Go to Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Delete Account.
- Follow the on-screen confirmation steps to submit the deletion request.
In the mobile app
- Open the app and go to Profile.
- Tap the settings icon.
- Choose Remove Account, then follow the on-screen confirmation steps.
The app calls the action “Remove Account,” while the website uses “Delete Account.” Check the confirmation screen before proceeding so you know which account action you are approving. If the menu differs from these paths, consult the linked help-center article rather than assuming that signing out or uninstalling the app deletes the account.
Before confirming, make sure you have selected the account you mean to close and that you have finished any export you wanted. The official wording is explicit: “Account Deletion is permanent and cannot be reversed.” Treat the confirmation as the final step, not as a temporary sign-out or a way to pause use of the service. The help information reviewed here does not describe a recovery period or a method to undo a submitted deletion.

What account deletion does—and what the published information does not establish
Character.AI calls account deletion permanent, but its published deletion instructions do not state how long backend processing takes, provide a backup-retention schedule, or give a complete list of records that could be retained for legal or security reasons. The available materials therefore do not support a promise that every copy of account information disappears immediately. If you need a specific answer about records or retention, ask Character.AI’s privacy contact at [email protected]. The company’s Privacy Policy describes information it collects and how it uses it, but it does not resolve those specific deletion-timing questions.
The Privacy Policy says information may include details users provide, information generated through interactions—including usage data and IP address—and, in some cases, information from connected third-party services. It describes uses such as operating, improving, and personalizing the service, customer support, model improvement, security, and legal compliance. This describes categories and purposes; it is not a record-by-record statement of what will remain after a particular account is deleted.

The account-deletion control is a specific account action with a clear statement that it is irreversible. The available materials do not give a precise timetable for the handling of every associated record, nor do they say how long backups remain or list every exception. It would be misleading to translate “permanent” into “all data is erased everywhere immediately.” For a retention question specific to your circumstances, use the privacy contact and the policy that applies in your location.
Deleting an account is different from other privacy actions
Several actions can sound similar but should not be treated as interchangeable. The available Character.AI materials describe them separately:

The distinction matters if you want a particular outcome. Deleting the account follows the account-settings process; an export is a separate request; and rights or training preferences may have their own instructions. Do not infer that completing one automatically completes the others.

In particular, an export is useful if your goal is to obtain a copy before closing the account; it is not evidence that account data has been removed. Conversely, submitting the account-deletion action is not described as a way to download your information or to make a separate request under a regional privacy law. If you want both a copy and deletion, the evidence-supported order is to request and retrieve the export first, then use the deletion controls. If your objective is a specific legal privacy right or training preference, consult its separate directions as well.
How privacy rights vary by location
Character.AI’s Privacy Policy says users’ rights depend on their region and may include access, correction, deletion, objection or restriction, and portability. Its regional disclosures effective July 1, 2026 describe rights for people in the European Economic Area and United Kingdom that include access, objection, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, withdrawal of consent, and complaint to a supervisory authority. The rights and procedures applicable to you depend on your location, so consult the Privacy Policy and the relevant regional privacy disclosure rather than treating that list as universal.
The July 2026 update says it does not remove or reduce users’ rights or add new requirements for users. That statement does not mean every user has the same rights: the policy still makes location relevant. For privacy-policy questions, Character.AI lists [email protected].
Use the general Privacy Policy as an entry point, then read the disclosure for your jurisdiction. Terms such as “deletion,” “erasure,” “objection,” and “restriction” can refer to distinct rights or processes; the fact that one appears in a regional list does not establish that it applies to every user or that every request uses the same steps. The provided materials do not support giving one worldwide legal procedure, so readers should follow the applicable disclosure rather than relying on a general list.
What happens to chats, characters, and your email if you start over?
Do not count on transferring your existing account content to a new account. In its help article updated August 28, 2026, Character.AI says account email addresses cannot currently be changed, and data, characters, and chat histories cannot be transferred between accounts. This means starting over is not a substitute for an export. If you want to retain information that may be included in your data, request the export while you can use the account and retrieve it before deletion. The help article does not promise that characters or chat histories can be recreated or imported into another account, and it does not identify an exception to the no-transfer guidance. Do not delete an account on the assumption that a new one will inherit its data or use the old account’s content.

The materials cited here do not say that account deletion reverses earlier model training or explain how a pending opt-out request is treated. If model-training use is your concern, consult the separate instructions linked from the privacy update; do not assume deletion alone handles that preference.
Character.AI’s training-data documentation, updated March 11, 2026, says its generative AI systems use varied sources, including publicly available data, user text and interaction data, internally generated safety and engineering data, synthetic data, and data from commercial agreements. It says the company began collecting and using data for model development in 2021. That is the company’s general description of its training-data sources and history, not a statement about whether an individual user’s information remains after account deletion. Keep the two questions separate: whether the account is closed, and whether personal data is excluded from future model training and improvement. The July 2026 update says an opt-out is available, but the reviewed sources do not establish that deleting an account makes the opt-out request, undoes previous training, or tells you what happens to a request already in progress. The documentation’s 2021 date and list of broad data sources provide context about the company’s stated model-development practices; they are not a user-specific deletion or retention answer.

Choose the right sequence
- You may want a copy of your account information: request the export first, wait for the email, and download the file before using the deletion control.
- You are ready to permanently close the account and do not need an export: use the account-deletion path for web or mobile and review the confirmation before submitting.
- You want to exercise a particular privacy right or change model-training use: consult the applicable regional disclosure or the separate opt-out instructions; do not assume account deletion substitutes for those steps.
- You hope to use a new account to keep old content or change the associated email: Character.AI’s current help article says neither email changes nor transfers of data, characters, and chat histories between accounts are supported.
A short pre-deletion check helps avoid the most preventable problems:
- Decide whether you need a copy of your information. If you do, request an export and allow for the 3–4-week estimate.
- Watch the account-associated email for the export link, then download it within 7 days of its arrival.
- Confirm that you have the file before moving on; do not rely on a pending request remaining available after deletion.
- Choose the correct platform path, since the web and app use different labels.
- Read the confirmation screen and proceed only if you are ready for an irreversible action.
- If your concern is a specific privacy right or model-training use, check the separate policy or opt-out instructions rather than assuming deletion addresses it.
