Adaptive mode automatically blends Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency, adjusting how much outside sound you hear as your surroundings change. You can also tune it to allow more or less ambient sound. It is one of Apple’s Adaptive Audio features—not the same as Conversation Awareness.
What Adaptive mode does
Apple describes Adaptive mode as blending Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency to control the noise you hear as environmental conditions change. Rather than asking you to stay in one fixed listening mode, it automatically balances the two. Apple’s explanation is in its Use Adaptive Audio with your AirPods support guide.

The balance is adjustable: while Adaptive is enabled, you can set whether it lets in more or less ambient sound. The available controls and their labels depend on the AirPods model and the connected device’s software.
How Adaptive compares with other listening features

Conversation Awareness and Personalized Volume are separate features, not names for Adaptive mode. Adaptive Audio refers to the feature set that includes Adaptive mode; Conversation Awareness responds specifically when you begin speaking.

Which AirPods support Adaptive Audio?
Apple lists these models as supporting Adaptive Audio:
- AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation
- AirPods 5
- AirPods Pro 2
- AirPods Pro 3
- AirPods Max 2
If Adaptive does not appear in the listening-mode controls, first confirm your exact AirPods model and that they are connected. Compatibility and controls can change as Apple releases new models or software; the model list and setup guidance are in Apple’s Adaptive Audio support guide. A universal minimum software version for every listed model is not established by that guide.

How to turn on Adaptive mode
On supported, connected AirPods, select Adaptive from the listening-mode controls:

- On iPhone or iPad: Open Control Center, press and hold the volume control, choose Listening Mode, then select Adaptive.
- On Mac: Open Control Center, choose Sound, select your AirPods, then choose Adaptive.
To change how much outside sound Adaptive allows, open the AirPods settings on your connected device and adjust the ambient-sound control while Adaptive is on. Exact settings paths vary by device and software version. Apple says AirPods settings carry over when the AirPods switch among a user’s devices, but these instructions should not be assumed to apply to unsupported models or every non-Apple device.

Choosing a listening mode
Adaptive is an optional middle ground, not a setting that must be used all the time. Choose among Adaptive, Noise Cancellation, Transparency, or other modes available for your AirPods and situation. If you want a fixed mode rather than an automatic blend, select Noise Cancellation or Transparency directly.
