Open WebUI separates personal User Settings from instance-wide Admin Settings. User settings affect one account; administrator settings control how the installation is configured and which features are available. A personal toggle cannot override a feature the administrator has disabled, while an administrator’s default interface choices generally remain overridable by each user.
Exact labels and available options can vary by installation and release. The paths below follow the official Open WebUI documentation, checked October 4, 2026.
Where to find user and admin settings
Open your profile avatar and select Settings to reach User Settings. Administrators also have an Admin section for instance controls. The distinction is about scope: ordinary users and administrators can manage their own preferences, but only administrators can change settings that govern the instance.

Why a personal feature toggle may not work
Many features have two gates: an administrator first makes the capability available to the instance, then each user can decide whether to use it personally. If the administrator turns it off globally, a user cannot turn it back on from their own settings. Open WebUI states: “If an admin disables a feature globally, users cannot enable it for themselves.”
The documentation describes this model for autocomplete and says it also applies to features such as web search, image generation, direct connections, and code interpreter. If a switch appears enabled but the feature is unavailable, ask an administrator to check the corresponding global setting before changing your personal preferences.

Instance defaults and your saved preferences
Default Interface Settings provide starting values; they are not restrictions. An administrator can configure them in Settings > Admin > General, under UI > Default Interface Settings, or with the DEFAULT_INTERFACE_SETTINGS environment variable. An untouched user option follows the current instance default. Once a user chooses a value, that personal value takes precedence.
- If an option is marked Default, the user has not set a personal value for it and is inheriting the instance default.
- When the administrator changes a default, the new value applies to accounts still inheriting that option; it does not replace a user’s chosen value.
- Changing an inherited option makes the selected value personal. Setting it back to the current default returns it to inherited behavior.

Theme and language are exceptions
The documentation says Theme and Language are stored in the browser rather than on the account, so they are not covered by the account-level interface defaults described above. For a starting language, the documented control is the DEFAULT_LOCALE environment variable.
Configure defaults with DEFAULT_INTERFACE_SETTINGS
Administrators can also set defaults through DEFAULT_INTERFACE_SETTINGS, using a JSON object. The environment-variable reference notes that its keys can include personal-setting options beyond those on the Interface page, including system and params. Use the documented option keys for the installation in question because names and available controls can change.

Invalid JSON is ignored. A valid JSON value that is not an object is also ignored, so no defaults are applied. Check the syntax and ensure the top-level value is an object if a configured default does not take effect. See Open WebUI’s Environment Variable Configuration reference.

Administrators manage connections used by the instance at Settings > Admin > Connections. A user’s personal API keys are under User Settings > Connections, but that option is available only when the administrator has enabled Direct Connections. This lets an individual configure a personal key without confusing it with a provider connection configured for the server.

Other useful User Settings
Interface scale and fonts
UI Scale and Font Family are in Settings > Interface. A chosen font must already be installed on the user’s computer; Open WebUI does not download fonts.
Open a settings tab directly
The settings URL parameter can open a particular settings tab. Documented user tab IDs include general, interface, notifications, shortcuts, connections, tools, personalization, audio, data_controls, usage, archived_chats, account, and about. The URL Parameters documentation explains the parameter. A non-administrator directed to an admin: tab is sent to General instead.

- A feature switch has no effect: Check with an administrator whether the feature is enabled for the instance.
- An option says “Default”: It is inheriting the current instance default because no personal value has been selected.
- An administrator’s new default did not change your option: You may have already saved a personal value, which takes precedence over the default.
- A personal Connections option is missing: Personal API keys require Direct Connections to be enabled by the administrator.
