A word processing program is software for creating, editing, formatting, saving, and producing text documents. It provides tools for shaping a document, while the document itself is the content or file you make with those tools.
What does “word processing program” mean?
Microsoft defines a word processor as “a device or software program capable of creating, storing, and printing text documents.” In everyday use, the term usually means an application that lets you write and revise text, format it as a document, and save or print the result. Microsoft’s overview of word processors describes these core tasks.

What does a word processing program do?
Its central purpose is to help you work with complete text documents rather than just raw text. Depending on the application, you can enter and change words or paragraphs, adjust typography and page layout, save a document for later, and produce a printable or shareable copy. In Word, for example, Microsoft documents saving to a computer or network location, reopening and editing a saved file, formatting selected text, and printing. Word for new users outlines that workflow.
Specific tools differ between programs and versions; the term describes the kind of work the software is designed for, not a feature checklist that every application must match.

Examples of word processing programs
- Microsoft Word: Microsoft identifies Word as a full-featured word processing program for Windows and Mac. It is used to create, edit, save, format, and print documents. Microsoft Learn’s Office applications details describes Word’s role.
- Google Docs: Google describes Docs as an online word processor for creating and formatting documents and working with other people. Google’s guide to using Docs on a computer explains its online workflow.
A word processor can be installed on a computer or accessed online. Browser-based access does not make a program a text editor, just as desktop installation alone does not define a word processor.

A word processor is designed for composing and formatting documents. A text editor focuses on opening, viewing, and editing plain-text files, with less emphasis on page layout and rich formatting. Microsoft makes this distinction in its overview of word processors and text editors.

In brief: choose a word processor when the appearance and structure of a document matter; use a text editor when you need to work with plain text. The difference is about purpose and formatting capabilities, not whether the software runs in a browser or on a computer.
