A steam wand sends pressurized steam into milk to heat it and, depending on the technique and attachment, add air for foam or finer textured milk. With a conventional manual wand, you briefly introduce air with the tip near the milk’s surface, then submerge the tip more deeply to heat and texture the milk. Purge and wipe the wand as your machine’s manual directs.
What a steam wand does
A steam wand is the machine’s outlet for steaming milk. Steam heats the milk, while air drawn in during steaming creates foam or a smoother, finer texture for drinks such as lattes and cappuccinos. The wand does not make espresso; it prepares the milk that you can combine with espresso.

For a manual wand, use a pitcher or milk jug to hold the milk under the tip. Fill level, wand position and controls vary by machine, so follow the marked fill line and the owner’s manual rather than assuming one setup fits every model.

- Check the machine’s instructions. Find how to select steam mode and how the machine indicates it is ready. For example, Morphy Richards says the steam-button light on its models should stop pulsing before use; this is not a universal readiness signal.
- Purge the wand briefly. Point it safely toward the drip tray or another location specified by the manual, then release steam to clear accumulated water or condensation. KitchenAid and Gaggia include a pre-use purge in their instructions.
- Add cold milk to a clean pitcher. Respect the machine’s fill mark or the amount stated in its manual. Nespresso’s Creatista Pro directions, for instance, use the jug’s marked maximum; that is specific to that machine.
- Introduce air, then heat and texture. With a conventional tip, position it at or just below the milk’s surface to introduce air. Then lower the tip farther into the milk to heat and texture it. The precise placement and movement depend on the wand: KitchenAid describes placing its tip just below the surface near the pitcher’s side, while Rancilio describes briefly dipping the nozzle in and out to control the amount of foam.
- Stop steaming before moving the pitcher. Swirl or pour the milk as appropriate for your drink. These serving steps do not guarantee a particular texture; the result depends on the wand and how it is used.
- Wipe and purge after steaming. Wipe milk from the wand immediately with a clean, damp cloth. Then purge it, or let its automatic purge run, as the manufacturer directs. Stop steam before removing the pitcher.
Why the technique can differ by wand
Conventional steam tip
On a conventional tip, the user controls how much air enters the milk by placing the tip near the surface, then moves it deeper to heat and texture. Follow the specific machine’s instructions for tip placement and operation.

Pannarello attachment
A Pannarello fits over the steam arm and has an air-intake hole that helps introduce air. Its instructions can therefore differ from those for a bare conventional tip. Gaggia’s Pannarello guidance, for example, starts with the tip deep under the milk and describes covering or submerging the air-intake hole to change frothing. Do not apply that method to every wand.
Machine-specific controls and purging
Machines can differ in readiness indicators, pitcher fill guidance and purge controls. Some purge automatically; others require you to operate a valve or control. Check the owner’s manual, particularly if it names a specific pitcher, fill line or attachment.

Cleaning and safe handling
- Wipe milk residue away promptly and purge the wand according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Gaggia says to clean its Pannarello after each use; Nespresso’s Creatista Pro guidance calls for cleaning the jug and wand after each use and describes an automatic purge after the wand is lowered.
- Steam and the wand can be hot. Keep hands away from the outlet and follow the machine’s safety instructions.
- Do not put fingers into the machine or try to clear a hot, pressurized tip using a method the manual does not authorize. For a blockage, use only the model-specific method: Morphy Richards, for example, mentions a pin for its nozzle, but that is not a universal instruction.
What equipment you need
The practical item for using a manual steam wand is a pitcher or milk jug to hold milk under it. A stainless steel milk-frothing pitcher is one possible choice, but no single size or pitcher is established as right for every machine. Check your machine’s manual for its fill guidance and any pitcher requirements.
