An artificial satellite has no single standard shape. Many have a central spacecraft body with antennas and solar panels, but the exact design depends on the mission. From Earth, you usually see a satellite as a moving point of light—not as a detailed outline of its hardware.
What does an artificial satellite look like?
Up close, a satellite is a spacecraft built around a main body that carries its instruments and other equipment. It may have antennas for communication, solar panels to generate electricity, and cameras or scientific sensors. The arrangement varies: panels can differ in number and placement, and some satellites use other power sources, including batteries.

NASA notes that artificial satellites come in many shapes and sizes because they carry different instruments for different functions. A box with two panels is a familiar illustration, not a universal blueprint. NASA’s overview of satellites and NASA Space Place’s explanation describe this variety.

A satellite’s shape reflects what it needs to do. The instruments and structures required for an environmental observation mission, for example, need not resemble those on a communications spacecraft. Engineers also design satellites to withstand launch and operate in the space environment.

Satellites do not need the streamlined shapes of aircraft moving through dense air. That is one reason their bodies and attached structures can look boxy or irregular. NOAA explains this design trade-off in its overview of satellite shapes and sizes.
How big is a satellite?
Sizes vary widely, so no single example represents all satellites. At the compact end, NASA describes the four 6-unit CubeSats in its Starling mission as each about the size of two cereal boxes stacked together. That gives a sense of one small-satellite design, not a typical size for every spacecraft. NASA’s Starling page provides the example.

What does a satellite look like from the ground?
To someone watching the sky, a satellite generally appears as a point of light moving against the stars. You cannot usually make out its body, antennas, or panels with the unaided eye.

In a NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day example published December 30, 2025, Starlink satellites appeared as points to human observers but showed up as short streaks in a 20-second camera exposure. The light in that example was sunlight reflected from the satellites; the streak records their motion during the exposure, not a visible outline of each spacecraft. NASA’s image explanation shows why a photograph can look different from the view by eye. Whether a satellite is visible depends on the viewing circumstances, so this example does not predict what you will see at a particular time or location.

Satellite or natural satellite?
“Satellite” can mean a natural body orbiting a larger one, such as the Moon, or a human-made spacecraft in orbit. This article concerns artificial satellites. As NASA explains, context determines which meaning applies.
