In the traditional system-bus model, it works alongside an address bus, which identifies where a transfer is directed, and control signals, which coordinate what happens. These are useful functional roles, not necessarily three separate bundles of wires in every modern PC.
What the three bus functions do
A system bus is a broad term for communication pathways among major computer components. In the classic teaching model, its functions are described as data, address, and control:

- Data bus: carries the information being transferred, such as a value read from memory or a value written to it.
- Address bus: identifies the memory location or input/output endpoint involved in the transfer.
- Control bus: carries signals that coordinate the operation and its timing, including whether it is a read or a write.
MIT OpenCourseWare describes a bus as “system architect jargon for a collection of wires used to transfer data using a pre-determined communication protocol” in its Spring 2017 Computation Structures lesson. The definition captures the idea of coordinated communication; it should not be taken to mean every modern connection is one shared bundle of wires.

Imagine a processor requesting a value from memory. It identifies the requested location, control signals indicate that the operation is a read, and memory returns the value over the data pathway. A write reverses the basic direction of the payload: the processor sends a value to the selected location.

This sequence is a functional explanation, not a universal wiring diagram. The exact physical implementation depends on the computer’s architecture. The U.S. Air Force Academy’s computer-architecture lesson and MIT’s lesson present these roles as part of the classic model.
Data-bus width and address-bus width are different
Bus width can refer to different things, so a width figure is meaningful only when its role is clear:

- AMD Socket AM5: Supports AMD Ryzen 9000 / Ryzen 8000 / Ryzen 7000 Series Processors
- DDR5 Compatible: 4*DIMMs
- Power Design: 14+2+2
- Thermals: VRM and M.2 Thermal Guard
- Connectivity: PCIe 5.0, 3x M.2 Slots, USB-C, Sensor Panel Link
- Data width describes how many bits can be transferred at a time on a data pathway.
- Address width describes how many bits are available to represent locations or endpoints, and therefore how many distinct addresses can be represented.
These widths answer different questions. A wider data path does not, by itself, establish how many memory locations a system can address; address width does not say how many payload bits move in one transfer. There is no single data-bus width that applies to all current PCs.

How the classic model relates to modern PC interconnects
“Data bus, address bus, control bus” remains a helpful way to separate the work involved in a transfer. It does not mean that a modern PC is built around one physical, shared system bus. Computer architectures use multiple interconnects, and their organization can differ from the classic model.

PCI Express (PCIe), for example, is a serial I/O interconnect rather than simply a new name for the old data bus. PCI-SIG describes PCIe as a general-purpose serial interconnect with configurable lane widths in its PCI Express FAQ. The useful distinction is that the classic model groups communication by function, while a modern interconnect such as PCIe is a specific connection technology with its own organization and signaling.

| Term | What it identifies or carries | Role in a memory read |
|---|---|---|
| Data bus | The payload bits | Memory returns the requested value over the data pathway. |
| Address bus | The location or endpoint | Identifies the memory location being requested. |
| Control bus | Operation and coordination signals | Indicates and coordinates a read operation. |
The three terms describe distinct functions in a traditional explanatory model; they should not be read as a claim that every PC implements three separate physical buses.
