A loudness knob changes the sound’s tonal balance—often emphasizing bass and treble—rather than simply making everything louder. It is intended to help music sound fuller when played quietly. Whether it improves the sound depends on your equipment, listening level, room and taste.
What does the loudness knob do?
On a stereo amplifier or receiver, the loudness control applies frequency compensation. Many designs boost low and high frequencies relative to the midrange, especially for quiet listening. That is different from the volume control, which raises or lowers the overall playback level.

The label alone does not tell you exactly how a particular device works. Some loudness controls apply a fixed tonal contour; others vary compensation with the volume setting. Check the owner’s manual for the control’s behavior, the frequencies it affects and whether it has a flat or off position.
Why can music sound thin at low volume?
Human hearing does not perceive every frequency as equally loud at every playback level. Equal-loudness contours describe the sound pressure needed at different frequencies for tones to be perceived as equally loud. In general, at lower levels, bass and very high tones need more sound pressure relative to midrange tones to seem equally loud.

Extron’s explanation traces the contours to historical experiments by Fletcher and Munson, who compared pure tones with a 1,000 Hz reference; it also notes later work by Robinson and Dadson. A loudness circuit attempts to compensate for some of this perceived tonal shift by shaping the playback signal. It changes the playback balance; it does not restore detail missing from a recording or make the recording itself more accurate.
These contours are not a promise that a loudness setting will make every song, room or listener sound the same. Extron notes that the contours discussed describe pure tones in a free field and do not necessarily describe noise bands or diffuse random noise.

Do loudness controls all work the same way?
No. A fixed control can apply the same broad tonal contour at different main-volume settings. A volume-linked design changes the amount of compensation as the level changes. The control may be a switch, a menu option or a continuously adjustable knob; its documentation may also specify which frequency regions it affects and what position, if any, is flat.

The control is independent of the main volume knob, and its fully counter-clockwise position provides no loudness compensation. This is an example for that amplifier, not a rule for other models. Does loudness improve sound quality?
Not universally. The intended benefit is most relevant when listening quietly and finding that the sound lacks fullness. Compensation changes the tonal balance to suit that listening condition; it is not an objective upgrade to the source. You may prefer the result, or you may find the added bass boomy or the treble harsh.
Should loudness be on or off?
Try it at the low playback level where the sound seems thin, then compare on and off at a comfortable, similar perceived volume. This is a listening check, not a controlled test: decide based on what sounds more natural to you. If the change is unpleasant, turn it down or off. If your control is independent of the volume setting, do not assume it automatically tracks the main knob; consult the manual.

Is loudness the same as volume or dynamic-range processing?
No. Volume sets overall playback level. Conventional loudness compensation changes frequency balance, though some designs link the amount of change to the volume setting. Dynamic-range processing is a separate kind of level management.
The word also appears in branded multichannel features. THX Loudness Plus, for example, is described by THX as adjusting surround-speaker relationships and compensating for tonal and spatial shifts as volume falls below reference. How to identify your equipment’s loudness behavior
- Look up the exact model in its owner’s manual rather than assuming all controls with this label behave alike.
- Check whether the manual describes fixed compensation or a change that varies with the main volume.
- Look for the stated frequency regions and any flat or off position.
- Confirm that the feature is a tonal loudness control, not a separate surround or dynamic-range feature.
