A hardware ban restricts access based on a device or its hardware identifiers, rather than only on a player account. Whether it can be removed depends on the game publisher: Riot offers re-evaluation for some HWID bans, while Activision and Embark say their hardware sanctions cannot be appealed. Start by checking the exact game and enforcement notice; there is no universal removal process.
What a hardware ban means
A hardware ban—also called an HWID ban, device ban, or hardware restriction—is an enforcement action associated with a device or its hardware identifiers. Its exact scope is set by the game or platform. The official policies discussed here do not establish one identifier list or a single technical mechanism that applies across games.

It is distinct from an account-only ban. For example, Riot says an HWID ban restricts the computer’s physical components from using Riot services during the ban period. Activision says its Call of Duty hardware bans apply to the device, not the account. Embark says a THE FINALS hardware restriction applies to the physical device and does not itself affect the account. Riot Games Support, Activision Support, Embark Studios Help Center

Conversely, Embark says a player can use a different, non-restricted device and retain account progress. The rules depend on the publisher.

Can a hardware ban be removed?
There is no universal answer. Some publishers accept a review request; others say hardware bans or restrictions cannot be appealed. Even where a review exists, reversal is not guaranteed.
| Game or publisher | Review or removal policy | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Riot games | Riot says players HWID-banned for negative in-game behavior or suspected cheating may request re-evaluation. Its investigation may lift or extend the ban; lifting is not guaranteed. Reinstalling the game or deleting the affected account will not remove it. Riot Games Support | Submit a support request to Riot Player Support for the affected player. If multiple accounts are affected, Riot says to open a separate ticket for each. |
| Call of Duty / Activision | Activision says hardware bans apply to the device, may vary in duration, may span Call of Duty titles, and are not eligible for appeal. Its policy describes an in-game status check using an account in good standing on the device. Activision Support | Follow the in-game status notice and current Activision policy. The policy does not promise a specific expiry date or an appeal. |
| THE FINALS / Embark | Embark says hardware restrictions apply to the physical device, not the account, and that it does not offer an appeal or unban process. Embark Studios Help Center | If available, use a different, non-restricted device. Embark says it cannot review or remove the hardware restriction. |
| Destiny / Bungie | Bungie distinguishes device bans from account bans and provides an appeal contact form. Its notice may state the restriction’s duration and affected activities. Appeals are not guaranteed, and restrictions may remain in place until they expire. Bungie Help, Bungie Help | Read the enforcement notice and use Bungie’s official appeal form with relevant evidence. |
What to do if you see a hardware-ban notice
- Identify the enforcement. Note the game, platform, exact error code or message, and whether it says account ban, device ban, hardware ban, HWID ban, or restriction.
- Check that publisher’s policy. Do not assume that another game’s appeal rules apply. The enforcement notice may identify the level, duration, or activities affected; Bungie says its notices may include those details.
- Use only the official review route if one exists. Provide accurate details and relevant evidence. Bungie asks appellants to include evidence and, when applicable, explain the policy issue or provide reproducible details of a game bug. It warns that submissions are automatically sorted and neither a response nor reversal is guaranteed. Bungie’s appeal guidance
- Do not test other accounts on a restricted device. Riot warns that accounts used on an HWID-banned computer may themselves receive a set-period ban.
- Remove identifier-altering tools if warned. Epic says a Fortnite hardware-identifiers warning means it detected a tool that hides or changes hardware identifiers. Its guidance says to remove the tool and restart Fortnite; leaving it installed or attempting further evasion may lead to match removal or permanent account action. Epic Games Support
- If the device is used or shared, explain that to support. Activision cautions about secondhand, borrowed, shared, or public devices. Bungie says a used console or PC previously banned from Destiny cannot connect to Destiny. Contact the publisher through its official support route; these policies do not establish that a factory reset or component replacement clears a device sanction. Activision Support, Bungie Help
What will not reliably remove the restriction
Do not treat reinstalling a game, deleting an account, resetting a device, or replacing a component as a universal fix. Riot explicitly says reinstalling or deleting the affected account will not remove an HWID ban; the cited publisher policies do not establish resets or component swaps as general remedies.

Avoid hardware-ID spoofers or other tools that hide or alter identifiers. Epic prohibits such tools in its Fortnite guidance and warns of enforcement for failing to remove them or trying to bypass a restriction. Do not buy an “unban” service or replacement hardware on the assumption that it will clear an existing sanction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan the account still be used on another device?
Possibly, but check the specific publisher’s rule and the account’s own status. Activision says its hardware bans apply to the device rather than the account, and its policy describes checking an account in good standing on the device. Embark says a restricted device does not itself affect the account and allows use of another non-restricted device. Riot warns that logging another account into an HWID-banned computer can result in that account being restricted there. Do not infer account standing solely from the fact that one device is blocked.
