Fertilizer disruptions can raise farm costs immediately, but they do not automatically cause lower crop yields or higher grocery bills. The outcome depends on which nutrients are affected, whether farmers can obtain them before the right application window, how they respond, and what happens to harvests, crop prices, inventories, and trade afterward.
How does a fertilizer disruption reach a farm?
A supply shock can start with expensive energy or feedstock, a plant shutdown, shipping trouble, export restrictions, or conflict. Those events can raise the delivered price, reduce the quantity available, or do both. Nitrogen fertilizers are particularly exposed to energy markets: natural gas is a key feedstock for ammonia and urea, and production is energy intensive.

Energy, production, shipping, and trade measures
In its April 2026 outlook, the World Bank linked the fertilizer price surge to disrupted exports and inputs after the Strait of Hormuz closed. The report also described production cessation or suspension in Iran and Qatar, reduced urea and ammonia production in India amid lower liquefied natural gas supply, and the risk that possible Chinese export curbs could add to pressure. These were conditions and risks reported at that time, not permanent descriptions of those markets.

The impact on a particular importing country still depends on its supplier mix, inventories, transport routes, and ability to switch sources.

What do the recent fertilizer-price figures show?
The World Bank’s April 2026 report used data through March 2026 for the monthly observations below. Its full-year figure is a projection, not a measured 2026 result.
| Measure | Reported value | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| World Bank Group fertilizer price index | More than 12% higher quarter over quarter in 2026 Q1 | Observed index change reported in April 2026. |
| Urea | $725 per metric ton in March 2026 | Nearly 55% above February and the highest since April 2022, according to the World Bank’s April 2026 report. |
| World Bank Group fertilizer price index | Projected to rise by more than 30% in 2026 | World Bank forecast in April 2026, not a realized full-year increase. |
Different nutrients do not necessarily follow the same price path. The World Bank identified urea as the most affected fertilizer in its April 2026 outlook; phosphate products such as DAP and potash such as MOP can face different supply conditions.

How can a shortage affect crop yields?
A yield effect occurs when a farmer’s response to cost or availability changes the nutrients a crop receives at a biologically important stage. Farmers may buy less, delay application, change nutrient mixes, reduce application rates, or switch crops. The result varies with crop requirements, soil nutrient reserves, weather, other available practices, and the timing of the disruption.
If fertilizer is unavailable during a relevant application window, receiving it later may not fully compensate for the missed timing. Conversely, a price spike alone does not prove that application fell or that yields declined: farmers may draw on stocks, find another supplier, or maintain use if expected crop revenues justify the expense. Yield consequences can appear only at harvest, so they may lag the initial price shock.

The World Bank has warned that further curtailments and demand destruction could negatively affect yields with a lag in some locations. It has not established a single percentage reduction in yields caused by fertilizer disruptions worldwide.
Why global averages conceal local strain
A 2025 study by Vos, Glauber, Hebebrand, and Rice found that global fertilizer demand declined only modestly during the 2022–2023 crop cycle despite steep cost increases. Using proxy indicators, the authors also found that many farmers in Africa were estimated to have experienced more adverse effects, with substantial variation among farmers. The study notes that data availability impeded a complete global assessment of the 2021–2022 shock, so its findings do not support a uniform estimate of farm-level yield or profit losses.

Why do fertilizer shocks squeeze farm margins?
Farm margins depend on revenue relative to costs, not fertilizer prices in isolation. A grower can face a tighter margin if fertilizer gets more expensive, if crop prices weaken, or if both happen together. The effect varies by farm because crops, nutrient needs, purchase timing, sales timing, and other costs differ.

In December 2025, the World Bank reported that urea, DAP, and MOP prices averaged about 20% above year-earlier levels in late 2025 while fertilizer affordability remained weak. It highlighted pressure on fertilizer-intensive maize, wheat, and rice. In April 2026, the Bank said urea’s ratio to food prices had reached levels not seen since mid-2022, indicating a tighter relationship between a key input cost and crop-price benchmarks. These indicators signal margin pressure; they do not quantify a universal fall in farmers’ profits.

Will fertilizer disruptions make food more expensive?
They can contribute to higher food prices, but fertilizer prices do not pass through to grocery prices one-for-one. If reduced fertilizer use lowers output in affected places and seasons, tighter harvest supplies can put upward pressure on commodity prices later. Higher energy and fertilizer costs can also raise production costs. The eventual consumer-price effect depends on harvests elsewhere, inventories, transport, exchange rates, trade policy, processing, and retail costs.
The FAO’s 2024 account illustrates why a straight-line prediction is unreliable: fertilizer trade contracted in 2022 and rebounded in 2023, and its short-term 2024/25 market view at the time was one of relative stability. By contrast, the World Bank’s April 2026 reporting described the food-market effect mainly through higher fertilizer and energy costs. Neither account establishes a fixed fertilizer-only share of grocery inflation.
What determines the impact in a particular country or season?
To judge whether a disruption is likely to affect a crop, distinguish the supply shock from its possible consequences. The most useful questions are:
Quick Recap
- What was disrupted? Energy, production, shipping, and export policy affect supply through different routes.
- Which nutrient is involved? Urea and other nitrogen products, phosphate fertilizers such as DAP, and potash such as MOP do not necessarily share the same market conditions.
- How exposed is the farm or country? Import dependence, supplier alternatives, and available inventories shape whether a global shock becomes a local shortage.
- When does the input need to arrive? A delay matters more if it overlaps with planting or a crop’s application window.
- Can the cost be absorbed? Fertilizer affordability depends partly on crop prices, not just the fertilizer’s quoted price.
- What has actually been observed? Separate reported prices and trade conditions from farmer responses, measured harvest outcomes, and forecasts.
- How far has the effect travelled? A farm-level cost increase, a wholesale commodity-price change, and a retail food-price change are different outcomes, with other factors entering at each stage.
