What Does a Digital Camera Card Do, and Which Type Fits?

A camera card is removable storage for photos and videos, but the compatible format, capacity, and speed depend on the camera. Here’s how to check.

A digital camera card is removable flash storage that saves a camera’s photos and videos. The term does not refer to one universal card shape: many cameras use SD cards, while some use other formats. Before choosing one, check the camera’s manual or manufacturer support page for the supported card type, capacity, and performance requirements.

What a camera card does

The card stores image and video files so they can be viewed, transferred, or kept after they are captured. “Camera card” is a general description, not a specific format. SD is a widely used family, but a camera may instead require a different physical card type. The SD Association describes SD as a removable flash-storage standard in its SD Standard Overview.

What SD, SDHC, SDXC, and SDUC mean

These labels identify SD capacity standards and their associated file systems. The SD Association’s current capacity overview gives the following ranges:

SD standard Capacity range File system
SD Up to 2 GB FAT12/16
SDHC Over 2 GB through 32 GB FAT32
SDXC Over 32 GB through 2 TB exFAT
SDUC Over 2 TB through 128 TB exFAT

These are standard-defined capacity ranges, not a guarantee that a particular camera supports every card in a range. Check the camera’s markings, manual, or manufacturer information before buying. See the SD Association’s capacity standard overview.

Capacity, speed class, and interface are different

Capacity indicates how much data a card can hold. A speed class specifies minimum sequential card-access performance under conditions defined by the standard; it is not the same thing as a bus interface. SD interfaces include High Speed, UHS, and SD Express. Actual write performance can vary with the camera and the operation, so a prominent “up to” read-speed figure alone does not establish how quickly a camera can write files.

For video or burst shooting, use the performance requirements stated for the camera’s recording mode. The SD Association explains speed classes and interfaces in its FAQ and its overview of flash storage in photography.

Some cameras use other card formats

Not every digital camera accepts a full-size SD card. CFexpress is a removable memory-card standard developed under the CompactFlash Association, and some cameras also use Memory Stick. The card’s physical type and compatibility depend on the camera model. Consult the manufacturer’s support information, such as Sony’s SD and CFexpress memory card guidance, as well as the camera’s own documentation.

How to check which card your camera supports

  1. Identify the card slot’s physical format. Check the camera manual or manufacturer support page to determine whether the slot accepts SD, CFexpress, or another card type.
  2. Confirm the supported capacity standard. For an SD slot, look for supported SD, SDHC, SDXC, or SDUC standards and the camera’s capacity limits. The labels describe standards; they do not override the camera’s compatibility limits.
  3. Match performance to the recording mode. Check the required speed class and interface for the photo or video mode you intend to use. Do not treat maximum advertised read speed as a substitute for a stated write-performance requirement.

This order helps avoid buying a card that physically fits but is not supported, or one whose capacity or performance is unsuitable. The SD Association advises checking device markings, manuals, or manufacturer information for compatibility in its SD card capacity choices guide.
