A dedicated media server is a computer or compatible device assigned to run software that makes a personal media library available to other devices. The host runs the server; a TV, phone, tablet, or other playback device connects as a client. “Dedicated” describes the host’s role, not a special kind of appliance.
What makes a media server “dedicated”?
The server is the device running the media-server software. It indexes or accesses your media and makes it available for playback over a network. “Dedicated” usually means a computer is set aside for that job rather than used as someone’s everyday workstation. It can also describe a repurposed computer that is assigned this role.

The playback devices are clients: they request and play media but do not have to host the library or server software. A television might connect to the server over the home network, for example, while the server remains elsewhere in the house. Plex’s setup documentation notes that its server can run on an everyday computer or a dedicated computer, among other compatible platforms: Plex setup guides.

No. A compatible desktop, laptop, mini PC, or NAS can host the software. The right choice depends on the server application, media formats, expected viewers, and whether the server must convert files during playback. Plex, for example, supports Windows, macOS, and Linux computers, but compatibility requirements vary by software: Plex Media Server requirements.

How do a NAS and a media server fit together?
A NAS is network-attached storage. It can store media, run server software, or do both if its exact model supports the application and workload. Storage and processing are separate jobs even when one device handles them together.
| Setup | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Computer hosts the server | Runs the media-server software; media may be stored on that computer or elsewhere. | Supported operating system, CPU for the expected workload, network access, and storage location. |
| NAS hosts the server and stores media | Combines storage and server processing in one device, if that model is supported. | Exact model and processor compatibility, transcoding ability, and client playback formats. |
| NAS stores media; computer hosts the server | Keeps the media library on network storage while a separate computer runs the server software. | NAS capacity and network access, plus a compatible computer to host the server. |
A NAS label alone does not establish that a device can run a particular media server or transcode video. Plex warns that many consumer NAS processors are limited and that most ARM models do not support video transcoding. If a NAS is only storing files, Plex says there is no special Plex requirement for the NAS itself; capacity and network access are the practical considerations. See Plex’s NAS guidance.

You will save $6,568.81 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH4300 Plus + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Your Data, You Control:No third-party clouds, no hidden access, UGREEN NAS provides a more secure and private data storage solution. It stores data locally on your private hard drives and does automatic backups. Thus, you can keep full control over it. The advanced encryption is TRUSTe certified in the United States and is awarded the first (and only) ETSI EN 303 645 certification mark for NAS products by TÜV SÜD Group.
What affects performance?
Requirements depend on the media-server application, file properties, playback clients, the number of simultaneous viewers, and whether video must be transcoded. Transcoding means converting media on the fly to suit a client or available bandwidth. If the server cannot transcode, the client needs to support the file’s format and other relevant properties.

That is Plex-specific guidance, not a universal minimum for every media-server program. Plex also notes that more simultaneous viewers—especially those watching video—make a server work harder. - Client compatibility: A client that can play a file directly may avoid the need for server-side conversion.
- Concurrent playback: Several viewers at once increase the server’s workload.
- Remote streaming: Streaming outside the home may require enough upstream bandwidth to deliver the media at its full bitrate.
- Storage and network: The host needs access to the library, whether the files are local or on a NAS.
Is DLNA required?
No. DLNA is one way to share media with compatible devices on a local network; it is not the definition of a dedicated media server or a requirement for every setup. Synology describes its Media Server as a DLNA-compliant server that streams multimedia from indexed folders to devices on the same network: Synology Media Server specifications. Plex also documents a DLNA option for Plex Media Server: Plex DLNA.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you decide before choosing a host?
- Which media-server software you plan to run, and whether it supports the host’s operating system or exact NAS model.
- Where the media files will live and whether the host can access that storage reliably.
- How many devices may play media at the same time.
- Whether your clients can play the files directly or the server will need to transcode them.
- Whether playback is limited to the local network or must also work remotely.
There is no universally best host: a computer, a NAS that runs the server, or a NAS paired with a separate computer can each fit different needs. Plex says its server is intended and expected to run from home for personal use; that statement describes Plex, not every media-server application or a general legal rule: Plex Media Server requirements.
