There is no single coded result for the letter a until you specify the cipher and its shift. With a Caesar cipher, a one-place shift changes a to b; a seven-place shift changes it to h. The alphabet wraps around after z, so shifting 26 places brings each letter back to itself.
How a Caesar shift changes the letter “a”
A Caesar cipher substitutes each letter with another letter a fixed number of places away in the alphabet. The key is the shift amount. The South African Department of Basic Education describes the rule as: “Each letter in a word is replaced by another letter in the alphabet, depending on the ‘shift’ key.” Its classroom example shifts uppercase A seven places to H, and HELLO to OLSSV. After z, the sequence cycles back to a. A 27-place shift therefore gives the same result as a one-place shift.
Calculate a shift without mixing up letter positions
One convenient method numbers the 26 lowercase letters from 0 to 25: a=0, b=1, and z=25. If i is a letter’s zero-based index and s is the shift, the new index is (i + s) mod 26. The “mod 26” operation keeps the answer within the alphabet by wrapping around.

For a, the index is 0. With a shift of 7, (0 + 7) mod 26 = 7, which corresponds to h. This convention is zero-based; if you instead call A the first position, be consistent and account for that difference when calculating.
“Alphabet code” can mean a cipher or a character code
A Caesar cipher tells you which letter substitutes for another under a chosen key. Unicode character encoding is a different system: it assigns numeric code points to characters so text can be represented and processed. The Unicode Consortium identifies capital A as U+0041, which is decimal 65. That value is not the answer to a Caesar-shift question; it is the code point for the character. Try the rule on a word
To encrypt a message with a Caesar shift, apply the same shift to every letter. To decrypt it, shift each letter back by that amount, wrapping around the alphabet as needed. The Department of Basic Education’s exercise asks learners to use their own key to encrypt a message and to decrypt one. You can practise the same idea with pencil and paper; no special book or tool is needed.

- Write the alphabet in order and choose a shift.
- For each letter, count forward by the shift, returning to a after z.
- To reverse the process, count backward by the same number.
When evaluating a cipher activity or learning resource, check which shifts it covers, whether it includes both encryption and decryption practice, and whether its examples clearly state how letter positions are counted.
