A 1 PB storage deployment is a system or service designed around roughly one petabyte of capacity—but that figure alone does not tell you how much data it can hold, how fast it can serve it, or how much hardware it needs. The practical answer depends on whether “PB” means decimal or binary units, whether capacity is raw or usable, and what workload and resilience the system must support.
First, clarify what “1 PB” counts
Petabyte labels can refer to different byte counts. Hitachi Vantara’s Ops Center 11.0.x requirements distinguish physical disk capacity from logical capacity: its decimal physical convention defines 1 PB as 1,000 TB, or 1,000,000,000,000,000 bytes. The same documentation uses 1 PB for 1,024 TB in its logical-capacity convention. The latter is a binary calculation; strict IEC terminology uses PiB and TiB for binary units, so check the convention a vendor or application actually uses rather than relying on the label alone. Hitachi Vantara’s capacity definitions were last edited March 16, 2026.

This difference helps explain why an operating system or backup application may show a smaller number than a drive label or storage console. Quantum says its DXi graphical interface presents decimal TB, while backup applications may report binary TiB but label them “TB.” In Quantum’s example, 272 decimal TB can appear as 247.38 TiB. That is a unit-conversion difference, not by itself evidence that data has disappeared. Quantum’s DXi site-planning documentation explains the display convention.
Licensing can have its own definition too. IBM Storage Scale 4.2.0 measures per-petabyte licensing in binary units (250 bytes), a product-specific rule rather than a universal definition of PB. IBM’s Storage Scale FAQ describes that licensing measure.

Raw capacity is not the same as usable capacity
A system with 1 PB of installed or nominal disk capacity will generally offer less space for data after protection and system overhead are accounted for. The gap depends on the design, including RAID or other redundancy, formatting, reserves, over-provisioning, and any distinction between installed capacity and licensed capacity. Ask for a stated usable figure and the assumptions behind it; do not infer usable space from drive labels or a product name.
For example, QNAP’s published nominal 1 PB configuration assumes RAID 60, 24 TB hard drives, conversion from PB to PiB, and pool over-provisioning in its effective-capacity calculation. Those assumptions are part of that vendor’s example, not a general rule for every petabyte system. QNAP’s petabyte storage page gives its configuration and calculation notes.

What the hardware might look like
One petabyte is a capacity target, not a standard-size appliance. The hardware footprint varies with drive size and type, redundancy, performance goals, expansion strategy, and whether the deployment is for general-purpose storage, backup, or data transfer.
NAS with JBOD expansion
QNAP’s worked nominal 1 PB example combines one TS-h2287XU-RP NAS, four TL-R1620Sep-RP JBOD enclosures, 80 hard drives, and six SSDs. It illustrates how a deployment can span a controller system and multiple expansion shelves; it does not establish a universal drive count or recipe. Product availability and specifications can change, so check the current vendor page before treating this as a purchasable configuration.

Modular backup appliance
Quantum’s DXi9100 documentation describes a purpose-built backup appliance. A configuration with two arrays and two expansion modules reaches 2 PB of licensed usable capacity and occupies 18U of rack space. The DXi9000 family documentation also covers capacity licensing, expansion, network interfaces, encryption options, and replication. These are backup-platform details, not like-for-like specifications for a general-purpose file or object store. Quantum’s site-planning information lists the configuration context.
Bulk transfer appliance
Microsoft Azure lists Data Box Heavy at 1 PB total capacity and 800 TB usable capacity per order. It is intended to move large datasets into Azure using standard NAS protocols, including SMB and NFS—not to act as a persistent storage cluster. It is relevant when the challenge is transporting an existing dataset, not choosing ongoing deployment storage. Microsoft’s Data Box page describes the service.

Scale-out and performance-oriented designs
Petabyte-scale storage can also be designed around analytics or AI/ML training workloads, where throughput, parallel access, and expansion may matter as much as capacity. Samsung’s PBSSD article describes a design with up to 16 E3.S SSDs rated at up to 15.36 TB each, for a stated maximum of 244 TB in a 1RU chassis. It also described a 1 PB-in-2RU design as upcoming at the time of that article, so treat that as a forward-looking design statement, not a confirmed current shipping specification. The article also discusses capacity subscriptions in 244 TB increments and 1-, 3-, or 5-year terms; verify current availability and commercial terms with the vendor. Samsung’s PBSSD article provides that product context.

Before comparing systems, define what the storage must do. A backup repository, a shared file platform, an object store, and a high-throughput analytics tier can all be described as “1 PB,” yet have very different performance, protection, and operational requirements. Establish the workload and recovery objectives first, then compare candidate systems against the same assumptions.

- Capacity Display Variance: 1TB external ssd often appears as around 931GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 1 TB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
- Capacity: Specify decimal or binary units and whether the number is raw, formatted, usable, or licensed. Include the protection layout, reserves, and over-provisioning assumptions.
- Performance: State sustained read and write throughput, latency, IOPS, concurrency, and expected behavior during a rebuild or failure. Request measurements relevant to the workload; the cited product descriptions do not provide neutral, comparable benchmarks.
- Resilience and recovery: Define which drive, node, or enclosure failures the design must tolerate, and whether replication or separate backup is required. Set recovery time and recovery point targets rather than treating redundancy as a substitute for a recovery plan.
- Growth: Check how capacity is added—drives, enclosures, scale-out nodes, or licenses—and whether compute and storage can grow independently.
- Facility needs: Compare rack units, power, cooling, cabling, ports, and weight. A rack-space number without the matching power and connectivity requirements is not a complete footprint.
- Operations: Account for monitoring, maintenance windows, support and software lifecycle, staff skills, migration, and vendor lock-in.
- Lifecycle cost: Include hardware or subscriptions, software, support, facilities, networking, power, spares, migration, and refresh—not just the initial capacity purchase.
What does a 1 PB deployment cost?
There is no defensible generic price for “1 PB” in the available product information. Price depends on usable rather than headline capacity, workload performance, protection, licenses or subscriptions, support, expansion, and facility and operating costs. Compare quotes built to the same capacity definition and workload, and evaluate lifecycle cost rather than treating a per-petabyte figure as a complete comparison.
