In structural colour, tiny features within overlapping wing scales scatter light and make some visible wavelengths reinforce one another while others cancel. When that reflected colour shifts with viewing or illumination angle, the effect is iridescence—but not all structural colour is iridescent.
What creates structural colour in a butterfly wing?
A butterfly wing is covered with scales arranged like overlapping tiles. A review by Rachel C. Thayer and Nipam H. Patel describes scales as roughly 300 micrometres long on average; individual sizes vary. Each scale is made from chitin and has layered features such as a lower lamina, longitudinal ridges, ridge lamellae, cross-ribs and spacers.

When parts of this architecture are comparable in size to visible-light wavelengths, they can selectively scatter light. Waves reflected from different surfaces may reinforce some wavelengths through constructive interference and suppress others through destructive interference. The wavelengths that reach an observer most strongly contribute to the colour they see. Pigments can also contribute, so a butterfly’s colour need not come from structure alone.

Why do butterfly wings change colour when they move?
Iridescence is colour that depends on angle: the reflected spectrum, and therefore the perceived colour, changes as the illumination or viewing direction changes. In some wings, the internal layers or ridges send different wavelengths most strongly toward an observer at different angles. Moving the wing changes which wavelengths are reflected into the eye, producing a visible shimmer or colour shift.
Structural colour and iridescence are related but not interchangeable. A structure can produce colour without a dramatic angle-dependent shift. In the green hairstreak, Callophrys rubi, gyroid photonic crystals contribute to a matte green appearance rather than the conspicuous iridescence that might be expected from isolated crystals. The observed effect depends on crystal orientation and variation in scale and wing shapes. Corkery and Tyrode analysed 912 gyroid crystals in three wing scales for their 2017 study; that figure describes their sample, not a census of the species. Their study of gyroid photonic crystals in Callophrys rubi explains how the arrangement can suppress conspicuous iridescence.

How do butterfly wings get their iridescent colour?
The optical architecture takes shape while scales develop on the wing in the pupa. MIT researchers used a viewing window in developing Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) pupae and reflection phase microscopy to observe scale formation over time. Their account describes ridges developing along the scales and links ridge structure both to colour and to moisture shedding. MIT’s account of observing butterfly wing development describes the imaging approach and the structures seen.

A 2024 study focused on actin, a component of the cell’s internal scaffolding, in iridescent and non-iridescent scales of Heliconius sara and across three distantly related butterfly species. The authors reported denser actin bundles in iridescent scales, associated with greater reflective-ridge density. In their experiment, perturbing actin during later developmental stages caused near-total loss of structural colour in H. sara. This is a result from that species and experimental context, not evidence that every butterfly forms colour identically. Greving and colleagues’ 2024 study reports the developmental findings.

How do structural-colour architectures differ?
| Architecture or example | How it produces or presents colour | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Ridge multilayers | Repeated layers along scale ridges selectively reflect wavelengths through interference. | Angular response depends on the specific arrangement; the structure alone does not establish how strongly colour shifts. |
| Gyroid photonic crystals | A three-dimensional, repeating structure interacts with light to create wavelength-selective colour. | In Callophrys rubi, crystal orientation and variation in scales and wings help produce matte green rather than conspicuous iridescence. |
| Lower-lamina thin films | A thin scale layer can reflect light from its surfaces, with interference selecting wavelengths. | The resulting appearance depends on the film and its setting within the scale. |
These examples show why two butterflies with structural colour can look very different. A bright, angle-dependent display such as the familiar Morpho-style effect is not optically identical to the relatively matte green of a hairstreak. To compare cases carefully, consider the structure, angular response, its scale and arrangement, the species and wing region, and how the structure was observed. The review summarizes ridge multilayers, gyroids and lower-lamina films, while the C. rubi study examines one specific gyroid example.
Can you see the structures that make the colour?
The colour itself is visible without special equipment, and a light microscope can help reveal scale patterns. But the fine architecture responsible for many optical effects is nanoscale: an ordinary student microscope is not equivalent to advanced imaging such as scanning electron microscopy. MIT’s account illustrates how reflection phase microscopy can follow developing scales, while detailed micrographs can reveal structures too small to resolve by eye.

What can butterfly structures inspire in technology?
Researchers study butterfly nanostructures as inspiration for biomimetic photonic materials. UNSW describes possible links to optical communication waveguides and improved solar cells; MIT’s account mentions directions including optical sensors, surfaces designed to resist rain and heat, and iridescent windows. These are research directions and design inspirations, not proof that a commercial product is available or performs like a butterfly wing.
