/etc/hosts is a local text file that maps hostnames to IP addresses. The address 0.0.0.0 is not another spelling for localhost: Linux documents it as “any address” in the context of socket binding, while 127.0.0.1 is the IPv4 loopback address for the local host. In a hosts-file entry, the address is part of a name-to-address mapping, so its effect depends on how the system and application perform name lookup.
How /etc/hosts works
A hosts-file entry associates an IPv4 or IPv6 address with a canonical hostname and, optionally, aliases. Whitespace separates the fields, and # begins a comment. The Linux hosts(5) manual describes the file’s format and use.

127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
These conventional examples map localhost to IPv4 and IPv6 loopback addresses. They do not show that 0.0.0.0 is a loopback address.
How 0.0.0.0 differs from 127.0.0.1
| Address | Meaning in Linux documentation | How to understand it here |
|---|---|---|
0.0.0.0 (INADDR_ANY) |
“Any address” for socket binding. | It is not a synonym for localhost. In /etc/hosts, it is the address written in a hostname mapping; the socket-binding definition alone does not predict how every resolver or application handles that mapping. |
127.0.0.1 |
The local host through loopback. | This is the conventional IPv4 address used for a local-host mapping such as 127.0.0.1 localhost. |
The distinction between the addresses comes from the Linux ip(7) manual. Binding a socket and resolving a hostname are separate operations: a definition about one should not be treated as a universal guarantee about the other.

What happens when a program looks up a hosts-file name
/etc/hosts can participate in the system’s name-lookup path, but the order and behavior depend on the system’s resolver configuration and the application. On systems using systemd-resolved, the systemd-resolved.service manual says the service can answer address lookups from hosts-file mappings, including reverse lookups, without sending those names to the network. Its resolved.conf manual documents ReadEtcHosts=, which is enabled by default for that service; it can be set to no.
Those details describe systemd-resolved, not every operating system, resolver, container, runtime, or application. The documented hosts-file behavior is for address lookups; it does not replace DNS for every record type. For example, systemd-resolved says these mappings do not affect queries for records such as MX.

Why a hosts-file change might not appear to work
The Linux hosts(5) manual says changes normally take effect immediately, except when an application caches the file. If a lookup still returns an unexpected result, check the whole lookup path rather than assuming that the address entry alone determines what the application does.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Inspect the entry. Confirm the address, hostname, aliases, whitespace, and any comments in the relevant
/etc/hostsline. - Check the system’s lookup configuration. Find out how the system orders name services and whether its resolver reads the hosts file.
- Check resolver settings. On a system using systemd-resolved, consult its documentation and verify whether
ReadEtcHosts=is enabled. - Consider application caching. An application may retain a prior result even after the file changes; its own cache or lookup behavior may need attention.
The hosts(5) manual also describes uses for the file such as bootstrapping when DNS is unavailable, serving as NIS input or backup, and supporting isolated systems.

Does a 0.0.0.0 entry block or redirect all traffic?
Not as a universal rule established by these manuals. A hosts-file line is a name-to-address mapping used within a system’s lookup path; its outcome depends on the resolver and application. The Linux documentation’s “any address” description for 0.0.0.0 concerns socket binding, not a promise that every program will block, redirect, or handle traffic in the same way.
