docker compose up -d starts every service defined by your Compose project and returns control of your terminal while those containers run in the background. The -d flag is short for --detach. It changes how Compose attaches your terminal; it does not change the requirement that each container’s main process stays alive.

What docker compose up -d actually does
Run the command from the directory containing your compose.yaml (or specify another Compose file using Compose’s file options):

docker compose up -d
up creates and starts the services declared by the Compose project. The -d option means detached mode: Compose starts the containers, then exits instead of keeping the terminal attached to their output. Your shell prompt returns, but the containers continue running in the background.
Detached mode is useful for web applications, databases, queues and other multi-container projects that should keep serving requests while you use the same terminal for other work. It is a terminal-attachment setting, not a second process supervisor. Compose does not turn an application into an independent daemon, and it cannot keep a container alive after that container’s root process exits.

What happens during startup
Compose reads the project definition
Compose loads the services, images or build instructions, networks, ports, environment settings and mounts in the project’s Compose file. Run the command in the correct project directory so Compose finds the intended file and project configuration.
Services are created and started
Compose creates missing service containers and starts them. If a service’s configuration or image has changed, Compose may stop and recreate that service’s container. Mounted volumes are preserved during this recreation, so data stored in those mounts remains available to the replacement container.
When you need explicit control over recreation, use the appropriate option:
--no-recreatetells Compose not to recreate existing containers.--force-recreatetells Compose to recreate containers even when Compose would otherwise consider them current.
Your terminal is released
After startup, Compose returns the shell prompt. Unlike attached mode, it does not continuously stream service output into that terminal. The services still write logs, which you can inspect later with docker compose logs.
Detached versus attached mode
Without -d, docker compose up remains attached and displays the combined output of the project’s services in the terminal. Pressing the terminal interrupt sequence in that attached session can stop the running project. With -d, the command finishes after starting the services, so the terminal is available for other commands.
| Aspect | Attached: docker compose up |
Detached: docker compose up -d |
|---|---|---|
| Terminal ownership | Compose remains connected to the running project until you stop or interrupt it. | Compose exits after startup and returns the shell prompt. |
| Log visibility | Service output is streamed automatically in the attached terminal. | Output is not streamed there; query it with docker compose logs. |
| Service lifecycle | Stopping the attached Compose command affects the running project. | Containers continue independently of that shell session until stopped, removed or they exit themselves. |
| Best use | Watching startup, testing interactively and seeing failures immediately. | Keeping an application running while continuing to work in the terminal or closing the terminal window. |
| First diagnostic commands | Read the live stream, then use status and logs if needed. | Run docker compose ps, then docker compose logs -f or a service-specific log command. |
Detaching does not hide failures permanently. It simply means you must ask for status and logs instead of receiving a continuous stream in the original terminal.

A practical detached workflow
1. Start the project
docker compose up -d
Wait for Compose to finish creating and starting the services. A returned prompt means the startup command completed; it does not, by itself, prove that every application is healthy or still running.
2. Check service status and ports
docker compose ps
ps shows the project’s service containers and their published ports. Use the all-containers form when a service may have already exited:
docker compose ps --all
The --all option includes stopped containers, making it the first status check when a service is missing from the normal running list.
3. Follow all service logs
docker compose logs -f
The -f option follows new log output as it arrives. This is the detached equivalent of watching the output from an attached up command.
Recommended Free Tools
4. Follow one service
docker compose logs -f web
Replace web with the service name from your Compose file. Service-specific logs are useful when one component is failing while the rest of the project remains up.
5. Inspect a running service from inside
docker compose exec web sh
exec runs a command in an already-running service container. Compose allocates a TTY by default, so this command normally opens an interactive shell when the image includes sh. If the image uses a different shell, substitute the shell that exists in that image.

6. Stop or remove the project deliberately
docker compose stop
docker compose down
Choose the command according to whether you want to preserve the project’s containers for a later restart or remove the project’s containers and networks.
Why a detached container stops
A container remains running only while its root process remains running. Detached mode does not daemonize a command, restart a finished program or keep an empty container alive. If the root command exits, Docker stops the container even though it was started with -d.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Typical sequence
docker compose up -dstarts the service.- The service’s configured root command runs.
- That command finishes, crashes or exits because of an application error.
- The container changes to an exited state.
- Your terminal remains available, because Compose was detached, but the service is no longer running.
A common variation is a startup script that launches a child process and then finishes. Once the script—the container’s root process—ends, the container exits even if the child process was intended to provide the service. The fix is to run the long-lived service as the container’s foreground/root process and then verify the result with status and logs.
Diagnose an unexpected exit
- List running and stopped services:
docker compose ps --all
- Read the complete project log output:
docker compose logs
- Follow new output while reproducing the problem:
docker compose logs -f service_name
Replace service_name with the service that exited. The status view tells you that the container stopped; the logs normally provide the application’s reason.
Useful log controls
The Compose logs command supports following output, timestamps and tail limits. For a noisy project, use those controls to narrow the stream to the period or number of lines that matters. For example, follow one service while reproducing its startup failure, then stop following when you have captured the relevant error.
docker compose run -d is not the same command
docker compose run -d also uses detached mode, but it performs a different operation:

docker compose run -d service_name command
This starts a one-off container for the named service and prints that container’s ID. It is intended for an ad hoc task, such as running a command once, rather than starting all application services declared by the Compose project.
| Command | What it starts | Typical purpose | Result shown by the command |
|---|---|---|---|
docker compose up -d |
The project’s declared services. | Run the application stack in the background. | Compose reports startup and returns the prompt. |
docker compose run -d service_name ... |
A one-off container for one named service and command. | Run an ad hoc task without treating it as the project’s normal startup. | A container ID is printed. |
Use up -d when you want the Compose application running as a project. Use run -d when you deliberately need a separate, one-time service command.
Stopping services without deleting them
docker compose stop: halt and preserve
docker compose stop
stop halts the project’s services but preserves their containers. You can start the preserved containers again later, retaining the container objects instead of recreating the project from scratch.
docker compose down: halt and remove
docker compose down
down stops and removes the project’s containers and networks. Data in a container’s writable layer is therefore not preserved when that container is removed. Named volumes require deliberate handling: do not assume that removing the project also gives you the same data-preservation behavior as stop; decide explicitly how those volumes should be treated before destructive cleanup.
| Command | Containers | Networks | Data consideration | Use when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
docker compose stop |
Stopped but preserved. | Not removed by this command. | Container objects and their associated state remain available for a later start. | You are pausing the project and expect to resume it. |
docker compose down |
Stopped and removed. | Project networks are removed. | Writable-layer data is not preserved; handle named volumes deliberately. | You want to tear down the project resources. |
How to tell whether detached startup worked
Use several checks rather than treating the returned prompt as proof of success.
- Running state:
docker compose psshould list the expected services as running. - Exited services:
docker compose ps --allexposes containers that started and then stopped. - Application output:
docker compose logsshows startup errors, configuration failures and shutdown messages. - Live behavior:
docker compose logs -f service_namelets you observe a service while it initializes or while you reproduce a failure. - In-container state:
docker compose exec service_name shlets you inspect a service that is still running.
Published ports shown by ps indicate which host ports Compose has published for the services. They do not, by themselves, prove that the application inside the container completed its own startup checks; use logs and the application’s normal connection test as well.

Common detached-mode mistakes and fixes
Running the command in the wrong directory
If Compose cannot find the intended project file, confirm that your current directory contains compose.yaml or invoke Compose with the file you intend to use. Starting a different project can look like a successful detached launch while leaving the expected services absent.
Assuming a returned prompt means healthy services
The prompt only indicates that Compose finished its startup command. Immediately run docker compose ps and inspect logs for services that are restarting or exiting.

Watching no output and concluding nothing is happening
Detached mode intentionally does not stream logs into the launch terminal. Use docker compose logs -f for the project or docker compose logs -f service_name for one service.
Using exec against an exited service
exec targets an already-running service. If it fails because the service is not running, check docker compose ps --all and read its logs before trying to enter the container.
Unexpected recreation after a configuration change
Compose may stop and recreate an affected service when its configuration or image changes. Use --no-recreate when existing containers must not be recreated, or --force-recreate when you need to ensure that all relevant containers are replaced. Mounted volumes are preserved during normal recreation, but do not confuse that behavior with preserving data in a container’s writable layer after down.
Stopping when you meant to remove, or removing when you meant to pause
Use stop for a reversible pause that keeps containers. Use down for project teardown, after deciding how named volumes and other persistent data should be handled.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A repeatable command sequence
The following sequence covers the normal detached lifecycle:
# Start services in the background
docker compose up -d
# Confirm running services and published ports
docker compose ps
# Include services that exited
docker compose ps --all
# Follow every service's logs
docker compose logs -f
# Follow one service
docker compose logs -f web
# Open a shell in a running service
docker compose exec web sh
# Pause services but keep their containers
docker compose stop
# Tear down project containers and networks
docker compose down
Replace web with the service name defined in your project. The sequence separates four decisions: start, observe, inspect and clean up. That separation prevents detached mode from becoming a blind fire-and-forget operation.
Quick Recap
Detached-mode checklist
- Run
docker compose up -dfrom the intended Compose project directory. - Remember that
-dmeans detached/background mode; it does not alter the application’s root process. - Run
docker compose psimmediately to verify running services and published ports. - Run
docker compose ps --allwhen a service is missing or may have exited. - Use
docker compose logs -fto replace the live output you would have seen in attached mode. - Use
docker compose execonly for services that are currently running. - If a container stops, inspect its logs and the root command rather than adding
-dagain. - Choose
stopto preserve containers ordownto remove project containers and networks. - Before using
down, account for data in writable layers and decide how named volumes should be handled.
