Yes, you can start a Minecraft server without paying, but the practical route depends on what you mean by “free trial.” A free host such as Minehut or Aternos can provide a browser-managed server without a credit card. You can also download Mojang’s official Java or Bedrock server software and run it on your own computer. The separate Minecraft game trial is different: its official FAQ says online multiplayer servers are blocked, although LAN play is allowed.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
This guide separates those options, explains Java–Bedrock crossplay, and gives setup steps without inventing limits, prices, or uptime promises that providers can change.

There are three different offers that are often confused:
- A free hosted server: a provider runs the server process for you. You create and start it from a web panel, so you do not need to keep your computer online.
- Self-hosting: Mojang gives you the server software at no charge, but your computer, electricity, internet connection, and maintenance become the hosting infrastructure.
- The Minecraft game trial: a time-limited copy of the game for evaluation. It is not an online-server hosting trial.
For a group that wants to play from different homes, the first two choices are relevant. The game trial alone will not let a trial player join an online multiplayer server. Mojang’s current trial FAQ states: “You cannot join online multiplayer servers during the Minecraft free trial, but LAN multiplayer is allowed.”

Choose the route that fits your group
| Route | Best for | What you supply | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minehut free host | Fast browser setup for Java or Bedrock players | An account and the provider’s dashboard | Free-tier behavior, availability, and resources follow the provider’s current policy |
| Aternos free host | A hosted world with a documented setup path and optional Geyser crossplay | An account; the owner may need to start the server | Free hosting may sleep or require manual activation; confirm current rules |
| Mojang software on your computer | Maximum control over files, worlds, and configuration | A suitable computer, compatible runtime, bandwidth, firewall settings, and possibly port forwarding | You are responsible for uptime, security, updates, and troubleshooting |
| Realms first-time trial | A managed official service for evaluating a subscription | Eligibility as a first-time subscriber to the 10-user plan | It is a 30-day subscription trial, not permanent free hosting |
Do not choose solely on the word “free.” Decide first whether everyone uses Java Edition or Bedrock Edition, whether the server must be online continuously, and how much technical control you need.
The official Minecraft trial: what it allows and blocks
The Java and Bedrock game trials each provide approximately 100 minutes of in-game time, or about five in-game days. That clock measures play inside the trial; it is not a month of server hosting.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Online servers are disabled
A trial account cannot join public or privately hosted online multiplayer servers. This includes a server you run yourself and a server hosted by a provider. LAN multiplayer is allowed, so players on the same local network can use the trial within that limitation.
Realms is a separate offer
Mojang offers a 30-day Realms trial only to first-time users who sign up for a 10-user subscription. The eligibility condition and subscription structure matter: after the trial period, it is a paid service unless you cancel under the terms shown when you subscribe. Treat Realms as a managed subscription evaluation, not as a permanent free tier.
Option A: Start a Minehut server in a browser
Minehut advertises free Java and Bedrock hosting with no credit card, no downloads, and no port forwarding. Its homepage also says the service supports play from PC, mobile, and tablet, and that plans have no playtime limits. Those are provider statements; resource, sleep, queue, and upgrade rules can change, so read the current dashboard terms before planning a large or always-on world.

Account and server creation
- Create a Minehut account and choose the free-server flow.
- Open the web dashboard and create a server name. Keep the name easy for friends to recognize and avoid sharing your account credentials.
- Use the dashboard’s start controls. Minehut’s support article, updated July 22, 2024, specifically identifies the “Activate Server” button for creating and activating a free server.
- Wait for the panel to show that the server is running before attempting to connect. If the panel shows a queue, sleep state, or confirmation prompt, follow that current on-screen instruction rather than assuming the server is ready.
Connecting Java players
Minehut’s Java joining guide uses mc.minehut.com as the connection address, after which the player selects the intended server. In Java Edition, open Multiplayer, choose Add Server or Direct Connection, enter the address, and select the server from Minehut’s network interface as instructed by the provider.

Connecting Bedrock players
Bedrock players should use the Bedrock endpoint displayed in Minehut’s current documentation or dashboard. Do not substitute the Java address: Bedrock uses its own connection details and account flow. On a phone, tablet, console, or Windows Bedrock client, open the server-add screen, enter the endpoint exactly as shown, and confirm that the server is running first.
What to verify before inviting friends
- Everyone is on a version the provider currently supports.
- The server is activated rather than stopped or sleeping.
- Players have the correct Java or Bedrock endpoint for their edition.
- Operators and permissions are configured before strangers receive the address.
- You have downloaded or otherwise backed up the world if the panel provides that function.
Option B: Set up an Aternos free server
Aternos provides a free-server “Get started” path through its control panel. As with any free host, availability and resource policies can change. A free server may require the owner to start it and may not promise continuous uptime, so do not advertise a specific idle timeout, queue length, RAM amount, or player limit unless the current provider documentation states it.
Basic setup
- Create an Aternos account and open the Get started flow.
- Choose the edition that matches your group’s clients: Java or Bedrock.
- Install or select the server software offered in the panel, then apply the required version and world settings.
- Start the server from the panel. Keep the control page available while the server transitions from stopped to running.
- Copy the connection address shown by Aternos and send it only to the players you trust.
Adding Bedrock players to a Java world
Aternos documents Geyser configuration for allowing Bedrock clients onto a Java server. Geyser acts as a translation bridge; it does not turn every Java mod or plugin into a Bedrock-compatible feature. Follow Aternos’s current Geyser instructions for installation, port settings, and the Bedrock address it displays.
Test with one Java player and one Bedrock player before scheduling a group event. If the Java player connects but Bedrock does not, check that Geyser is installed for the server version, that the Bedrock endpoint is the one currently shown by Aternos, and that the server is fully started.

Option C: Run Mojang’s server software yourself
Mojang states that the official server software for both Java and Bedrock is free to download. “Free” here means no software license fee; it does not remove the practical costs of a computer, electricity, bandwidth, storage, backups, or your time.
Java Edition self-hosting
- Download the official Java server package from Minecraft.net.
- Install a Java runtime compatible with the server package. The required runtime can vary with the Minecraft release, so use the version specified in the package’s current instructions.
- Create a dedicated folder for the server and place the server JAR inside it. Keeping server files separate from personal documents makes backups and updates safer.
- Launch the JAR from a terminal or the operating system’s script mechanism. On first launch, the server may create configuration files and require you to accept the end-user license agreement in the generated settings.
- Stop the process cleanly, edit the generated configuration, and start it again. Set the world name, difficulty, game mode, and operator permissions before inviting players.
Bedrock Edition self-hosting
- Download the official Bedrock dedicated-server package for a supported operating system.
- Extract it to a dedicated folder and run the executable for that operating system.
- Review the generated configuration and set the world and access options.
- Keep the process running while friends play, and stop it through the server’s normal command or console method before maintenance.
Allowing friends outside your home
Players on the same home network may be able to connect using the host computer’s local address. Connections from the internet usually require two separate changes:
- Firewall rule: permit the Java or Bedrock server process, or its required network port, through the host computer’s firewall.
- Router port forwarding: forward the server’s port from the router to the host computer’s local address. The exact port and protocol depend on the edition and server package.
Use a reserved local address for the host so a router restart does not send forwarding to a different device. Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot, rather than assuming that a successful local connection proves internet access.
Self-hosting responsibilities
- Install security updates for the operating system and Java runtime.
- Back up the world while the server is stopped or after using the server’s safe-save procedure.
- Restrict operator privileges and use a whitelist when the software supports it.
- Monitor storage, memory, CPU load, and upload bandwidth.
- Plan for outages: the server is unavailable when the computer, router, or internet connection is offline.
Can Java and Bedrock players share one free server?
Java and Bedrock are different editions with different networking and feature sets. A Java-only server does not automatically accept Bedrock clients, and a Bedrock-only server does not automatically accept Java clients.

Three workable patterns
- All Java: use a Java host or self-host the Java software. This is the simplest configuration when every player owns Java Edition.
- All Bedrock: use a Bedrock host or the Bedrock dedicated server when everyone plays on mobile, console, or Bedrock for Windows.
- Mixed group: run a Java server with a bridge such as Geyser, following the host’s edition-specific instructions. Aternos documents this path; Minehut advertises Java and Bedrock access and provides separate connection details.
Crossplay can change how commands, skins, redstone behavior, chat, and mods appear. Test the specific world and features your group uses. If a mod requires a Java client installation, a Bedrock player may not be able to use that content simply because a bridge is present.

How to host without port forwarding
Use a browser-managed host when you do not control the router, cannot expose a home port, or do not want to maintain firewall rules. Minehut explicitly advertises no port forwarding, and Aternos provides a hosted control panel. In both cases, the provider handles the public network endpoint.
Self-hosting without forwarding is generally limited to players on the same local network, unless you use a separate networking solution. That introduces another service, account, and security decision, so it is not the same as a zero-setup public server.
Availability, backups, and control: the questions free plans do not answer automatically
Before moving a long-running world to a free host, check these items in the provider’s current documentation:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does the owner have to press Start or Activate? | A server that sleeps or stops cannot be joined until someone starts it. |
| Is the world continuously online? | Free services may suspend idle servers or limit how they run; do not assume 24/7 availability. |
| Can you download the world? | A local copy protects you if a server is reset, suspended, or discontinued. |
| Are plugins, mods, and custom JARs allowed? | Free panels may restrict software choices even when basic vanilla play works. |
| What happens at resource limits? | CPU, memory, storage, queues, and network policies determine whether a busy world remains playable. |
| What is the upgrade path? | Payment may buy more resources or always-on operation, but exact prices and features must be checked at the time you subscribe. |
First-session checklist
- Confirm every player’s edition: Java, Bedrock, or a planned Geyser bridge.
- Pick a hosted route or self-hosting based on your need for control and uptime.
- Create the server and verify that it reaches a running state.
- Connect alone first; confirm the world loads and the spawn area is correct.
- Configure the whitelist, operator account, difficulty, game mode, and any server rules.
- Make a backup or download the world before inviting the full group.
- Test one player from each edition and from a different network when internet play is required.
- Record the exact address, edition, version, and start procedure in your group chat.
Troubleshooting common failures
“The trial cannot join my server”
This is expected for the official Minecraft game trial. The trial permits LAN multiplayer but blocks online multiplayer servers. The account needs a version of the game that supports online servers.
“The address works for me but not my friend”
Check that both players are using the correct edition endpoint, that the server is actually running, and that the friend is not using a stale address copied before a provider change. For self-hosting, test firewall and router forwarding from outside your home network.
Best Value
“Java connects, Bedrock cannot”
Verify that the host supports Bedrock access and that the Bedrock endpoint is different from the Java address when required. On a Java world, confirm that Geyser is installed and configured for the server version. Recheck the provider’s current port and connection instructions instead of guessing.
“The server stops when nobody is playing”
That may be normal free-tier behavior. Look for a sleep, idle, manual-start, or queue notice in the host’s current policy. If continuous availability is essential, self-hosting on an always-on computer or paying for an appropriate plan may be necessary.

When paying becomes reasonable
Stay on a free route when your group is small, occasional, comfortable pressing Start, and happy with the software and availability the provider supplies. Consider a paid plan or self-hosted hardware when you need predictable uptime, larger or busier worlds, dependable backups, advanced plugins, private performance headroom, or support with a defined response process.
Do not use a provider’s promotional wording as a technical specification. Confirm current resource limits, supported editions, storage policy, backup retention, suspension rules, and cancellation terms at the moment you choose.
Bottom line: the fastest no-payment path
For the least technical work, create a free Minehut or Aternos server, activate it from the browser panel, and use the edition-specific address shown by the provider. For complete control, download Mojang’s free Java or Bedrock server software and accept the hardware, networking, and maintenance duties. The Minecraft game trial itself is not an online-server trial, and Realms’ 30-day offer is limited to first-time 10-user subscribers rather than a permanent free plan.
