They change the controller’s physical feel and travel, not the game’s aim settings. Microsoft also says the controller detects trigger-lock changes automatically.
What adjustable thumbstick tension changes
The Series 2 has three thumbstick resistance settings. Higher tension feels firmer as you move the stick; lower tension feels lighter. Microsoft says the options include resistance matching that of an Xbox 360 controller or a standard Xbox One controller. The right setting is personal: Microsoft does not identify one as best for every player or game.
To change tension, use the included thumbstick-adjustment tool. Microsoft lists manual tension adjustment separately from sensitivity curves in the Xbox Accessories app: tension changes the physical resistance of the stick, while a sensitivity curve changes how the game receives and responds to stick input. One does not substitute for the other. Microsoft’s product page describes these as separate controls.
What trigger stops do
Trigger stops—also called shorter hair-trigger locks—limit trigger travel. With the lock engaged, the trigger needs a shorter pull to activate than it does with the full, unlocked travel. This can suit games in which you want a short trigger action, such as firing, without pulling the trigger through its full range.

Microsoft described quicker firing as the purpose of the shorter setting and said the controller recognizes lock changes automatically, so you do not need to reconfigure the Xbox Accessories app each time. That is a design intent, not a measured promise: Microsoft’s announcement gives no quantified improvement in reaction time, accuracy, or win rate. Keep the three controls distinct

These controls can be chosen independently. For example, a player may prefer firm stick resistance but a short trigger pull, or may leave a trigger unlocked while adjusting a sensitivity curve. Those are preference-based setups, not game-specific recommendations backed by Microsoft testing.

The full Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 package lists the controller, thumbstick-adjustment tool, charging dock and USB-C cable, paddles, extra thumbsticks, extra D-pad, and carrying case. The Series 2 Core package lists the controller, tool, and USB-C cable. Package contents vary by version; check the listing for the specific package you have. The documented tension adjustment uses the included tool, so a separate tool is not required.
Microsoft also identifies the thumbsticks as interchangeable. Swapping a thumbstick is optional customization or replacement, not a prerequisite for changing tension.
