What Do the Different Colored Roads Mean on Waze?

Waze traffic overlays run from green for free flow to dark red for near standstill. Base road colors in Map Editor style indicate road types, not congestion.

On Waze, colored traffic overlays show how traffic is moving: green means free flow, yellow light traffic, light red moderate traffic, red heavy traffic, and dark red near-standstill conditions. If the roads are colored even when no traffic overlay is visible, you may be seeing the Map Editor style instead, which uses colors to identify road types.

What Waze’s traffic colors mean

Waze’s traffic colors indicate traffic conditions, not a road’s permanent type. Waze’s partner-facing Traffic View guidance says the color coding mirrors the Waze app:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Green: Free-flowing traffic; cars can move at the speed limit.
  • Yellow: Light traffic; drivers can still travel at relative speeds.
  • Light red: Moderate traffic, with congestion starting to build.
  • Red: Heavy traffic, with significant delays expected.
  • Dark red: Bumper-to-bumper traffic, close to a standstill.

These colors are a visual guide to reported traffic conditions. A road without a traffic highlight should not be assigned a congestion level based only on its underlying map color.

Why some roads have different base colors

Waze can also show a Map Editor color scheme. In that style, colors identify road types rather than current traffic. Waze Community guidance from a Product Expert says those road-color conventions can vary by local community, so a color-to-road-type legend from one place is not a universal rule. The reviewed guidance does not establish a complete global legend for these colors.

Waze describes its maps and navigation as powered by users on its About page. That user-powered mapping context helps explain why local road classifications and conventions may differ.

How to tell which color system you’re seeing

What you see What it represents Does it change with traffic?
Traffic-colored highlight along a road Current traffic conditions: green through dark red Yes; it reflects traffic conditions.
Colored road in Map Editor style Road type, according to the map’s local conventions No; it is a map-style cue, not a congestion level.

If you are unsure, look for whether the road is highlighted as a traffic overlay or appears as part of the base map styling. Don’t infer congestion from a road-type color.

Change the map style or hide traffic colors

Switch between Default and Map Editor styles

A Waze Community Product Expert described two daytime schemes: Default, where roads appear gray, and Map Editor, whose road colors match the online Waze Map Editor. For Waze version 4.92.0.0 and above, that response gave this path: My Waze > Settings > Map display > Type. The path is version-sensitive, and the community thread noted that the help page under discussion was outdated, so labels or placement may differ in your app.

Turn off the traffic overlay

A 2023 Waze Community response described this control: Settings > Map Display > Show Traffic. Because this instruction comes from a community response rather than current official user documentation, treat it as version-sensitive. If the labels differ, look in Map Display for the traffic display control.
