The first Galaxy S arrived in 2010; later names moved from Roman numerals such as Galaxy S II to Arabic numbers such as Galaxy S10 and S20. A generation number identifies the family era, not the exact phone or its full specifications.
What does “Galaxy S” mean?
Galaxy S is Samsung’s flagship smartphone family. In a 2011 naming announcement, Samsung said the “S” stood for “Super Smart” and that it would use the S class for flagship devices. That announcement describes Samsung’s naming rules at the time; it should not be treated as a complete guide to every suffix or product name used in later years. Samsung’s 2011 naming announcement

How have Galaxy S generation names changed?
Roman numerals for early successors
The first Galaxy S was announced in 2010. Samsung initially identified successors with Roman numerals; its 2011 announcement gave Galaxy S II as an example. It also described “Plus” as an upgrade to an existing model and “LTE” as an indication of LTE connectivity within that naming system. Later labels evolved, so these historical definitions should not be assumed to explain every modern suffix. Samsung’s naming-strategy announcement

Samsung later adopted Arabic-numbered generations. Its history of the series identifies the S10 as a 2019 family and explains that the following year’s family was named S20, not S11. Samsung’s more recent newsroom materials use the Galaxy S25 series name. The number is therefore a generation label, and the numbering does not always advance by one. What does the number tell you—and what does it leave out?
The number is a quick way to place a phone in the series’ release sequence. It does not tell you which specific model you have, the full feature set, or whether a particular regional version supports a feature or network. Samsung has offered distinct models within a generation: its history, for example, identifies both the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. The same account notes that curved-edge displays and wireless charging appeared with the S6 generation, while 5G support marked the S20 generation. Those examples show why a generation label alone is not a specification sheet. Samsung’s Galaxy S history
- Generation number: the broad family or release era, such as S10 or S20.
- Model name or tier: a distinction between phones in the same generation, such as S7 and S7 Edge.
- Connectivity label: a name may call out a feature such as 5G, but confirm it for the exact model and market.
How should you compare two Galaxy S versions?
- Identify the generation and release era. This establishes the broad point in the series’ history.
- Find the exact model name and model number. Do not assume two phones with the same generation number are identical.
- Compare the features that matter to you. Check display, cameras, connectivity, and software support against official specifications for the specific regional model.
- Confirm market and network compatibility. Product names alone do not establish that every country received the same variant or that a device supports a particular network.
Samsung’s naming history is useful for context, but a purchase or compatibility decision should rely on the specifications for the exact device and market.

What did Samsung’s early sales figures refer to?
In its August 2011 naming announcement, Samsung reported that the original Galaxy S had sold 10 million units worldwide by that announcement. The same announcement said Galaxy S II reached 5 million units in 85 days. These are historical figures reported by Samsung in 2011, not current sales totals. Samsung’s 2011 announcement
