Moon rocks contain small amounts of volatile elements and compounds, including hydrogen-bearing species, carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, fluorine and chlorine. Their forms and amounts vary with the sample and its geological setting. “Locked in rock” means that a lunar sample retains or records volatile material; it does not mean every Moon rock contains free water or gas.
What counts as a volatile in lunar material?
“Volatile” describes how a substance behaves, not one particular ingredient: volatile elements or compounds can be driven off when material is heated. NASA’s historical reference discusses hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, noble gases, sodium, potassium and sulfur in its treatment of volatile elements. A later review of lunar magmatic volatiles also identifies hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, fluorine, sulfur and chlorine.

Depending on the study, the evidence may come from whole rocks, volcanic glass, mineral or melt inclusions, lunar soil, or gases reconstructed from volcanic materials. Those are different kinds of evidence, and their measurements should not be treated as interchangeable.

Which volatile elements have been identified?
Across the sources, the reported inventory includes hydrogen-bearing species, carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, fluorine and chlorine, as well as noble gases, sodium and potassium in the historical reference. This is an inventory of substances discussed in lunar samples and materials, not a claim that every listed element occurs in every rock.

There is no single concentration table that reliably describes all volatile elements across all lunar rock types. In particular, a value from one sample or material should not be generalized to the Moon as a whole.
What do Apollo samples tell us about lunar interiors?
Apollo missions returned rocks and soils that could be chemically analyzed in laboratories. Those samples provide evidence for volatiles in lunar materials, including volcanic products. NASA-hosted research identifies Apollo 17 high-titanium glass beads as the most reliable basis for estimating the composition of lunar volcanic gases.

A 2024 review by Varnam, Hamilton, Aleinov and Barnes examines mare eruptions from about 4.0 to 1.2 billion years ago. In its reconstruction of volcanic gas, hydrogen is the most abundant element by mole, with sulfur third after hydrogen and oxygen. That ranking describes the inferred composition of those gases; it is not a ranking of elemental abundance in every Moon rock.
The review expects hydrogen to have been mostly molecular hydrogen (H₂) under the predicted oxygen conditions of lunar magma. Its fate differs from water vapor (H₂O): H₂ is more readily lost to space, while H₂O could freeze and persist in permanently shadowed polar regions.

How are rock-bound volatiles different from polar deposits?
Lunar volatiles occur in more than one reservoir. Endogenous volatiles are associated with the Moon’s interior and materials such as magma and volcanic products. Surface and regolith volatiles are a separate category; permanently shadowed regions can preserve materials that migrated or arrived at the surface.
NASA’s overview combines evidence from Apollo material with orbital observations and the LCROSS impact, which exposed material from a permanently shadowed region. The impact-ejecta evidence concerns a different setting from the Apollo rock samples, so the two should not be merged into one universal inventory of Moon rocks. A volatile detected in polar material is not automatically a volatile retained inside a rock.

Where did lunar volatiles come from?
Possible sources and processes include material native to the Moon, solar-wind contributions, impacts, volcanic degassing and later movement across the surface. Their relative roles vary by element and reservoir. NASA’s historical technical reference, for example, reports that most carbon in lunar soils is solar-wind-derived, while carbon in rocks is indigenous. That finding is specific to carbon and should not be extended to every volatile.

The small amounts of vaporizing elements in lunar rocks also inform models of the Moon’s formation. NASA’s formation overview connects volatile depletion with the idea that a high-energy formation event allowed some vaporizing material to escape. This supports a formation explanation for depletion; it does not mean all volatiles were lost or that no volatile reservoirs remain.

What remains uncertain?
Researchers continue to investigate the sources, chemical forms, abundance and distribution of lunar volatiles, as well as how they move across the surface and whether subsurface material can be accessed. The evidence establishes multiple volatile reservoirs, but it does not provide one complete, uniform account of every element in every lunar setting.
