The letters A, B, X and Y name the four face buttons on controllers that use them. They tell you which physical button to press. They do not tell you what that button does. The action depends on the game, so the prompt on screen, the tutorial, or the control settings decide whether A jumps, confirms a menu choice, or does something else entirely.
What the letters name
Nintendo’s support diagrams for the Joy-Con and the Switch Pro Controller label the same four face buttons A, B, X and Y. (Nintendo Joy-Con diagram; Nintendo Pro Controller diagram) Microsoft’s input documentation treats A, B, X and Y as separate controls, and identifies the Xbox Wireless Controller as the controller bundled with Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles. (Microsoft input mapping; Microsoft controller terminology)

The letter is a name printed on a physical button. It is not a code for a gameplay action. Whatever a button does is set by the game’s own programming or by the player’s settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy the same letter can do different things
Apple’s archived Game Controller Programming Guide makes this point with two example layouts. In one example, a platform game uses A or B to jump. In another, a driving game uses A to accelerate and X or B to brake. Apple presents these as examples only, not as rules that apply across platforms. The same guide, in the section “Identifying Controls Within Your Game,” says: “As you implement controller support in your game, make sure you describe those controls to the player.” That instruction is the reason games show prompts in the first place.
Three factors usually determine what a button does at a given moment:
Rank #2
- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
- The game. Each title assigns its own actions to each button.
- The control settings. Many games let players remap buttons, so a default can be changed.
- The context. Within one game, a button may behave differently on a menu screen than during play.
How the four buttons are laid out
Matching a printed label to the right physical button requires knowing where each one sits. The layouts differ between brands, so a letter pressed in the wrong position is a common source of confusion.
| Controller family | Face-button labels | Position of each button |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Joy-Con (right) and Switch Pro Controller | A, B, X, Y | A right, B bottom, X top, Y left |
| Xbox Wireless Controller | A, B, X, Y | A bottom, B right, X left, Y top |
| PlayStation controllers | Symbols, not letters: triangle, circle, cross, square | Triangle top, circle right, cross bottom, square left |
The Nintendo and Xbox layouts swap A and B and also swap X and Y, so pressing the button in the same position on the other controller produces a different letter. The PlayStation row is a comparison by symbol, not by letter; PlayStation’s support page on controller part names identifies the action buttons as a group, and the symbols are the labels to match. Because the position and symbol set vary by model, the diagram for your exact controller is more reliable than a general translation.

What to do when a prompt is unclear
- Read the prompt the game shows. Most games display an icon or letter for the button it expects. Match that icon to your controller, not to a letter you remember from another system.
- Open the game’s controls or button settings. The menu name differs between games, and it is usually found under Options, Settings or Controls.
- Check the diagram for your controller model. Use the Nintendo or Microsoft diagram linked above, and confirm the label and position before pressing.
- If the game uses letters but your controller uses symbols, follow the symbol the game displays for your system. Do not translate by letter alone.
- If the game offers remapping, change the mapping for the action you need and test it in a safe place such as a menu or tutorial.
What the sources do not explain
The official documentation cited here describes what the letters are and how games use them. It does not explain why these particular letters were chosen for these buttons. Origin stories found online are not supported by the sources cited here, so this article does not offer one.
