ProRAW is for still photos; ProRes is for video. ProRAW gives you more flexibility to adjust a photo’s exposure, color, and white balance. ProRes is designed to preserve higher color fidelity with less compression for video editing. Both can create much larger files than everyday camera formats, so they are most useful when you plan to edit and have room to store the originals.

What ProRAW does for photos
ProRAW is Apple’s still-image format. It combines standard RAW information with iPhone image processing, giving you more room to adjust exposure, color, and white balance while editing. The original is a DNG file, a format supported by Apple Photos and other compatible apps; Apple recommends using an editor that supports ProRAW for the best results. An app without ProRAW support may display the image differently. If you share an edited version from Photos, the exported copy may be a JPEG rather than the original DNG.
Choosing 12 MP or 48 MP
On supported newer Pro models, 48 MP capture retains more detail and can give you more latitude when cropping, while 12 MP files take less space. Apple’s examples put a 12 MP ProRAW file at approximately 25 MB and a 48 MP file at approximately 75 MB; actual sizes vary. Apple’s support page does not state a publication date for these estimates.

Apple’s documented 48 MP option is limited to the main camera at 1×. Ultra Wide, Telephoto, Night mode, flash, and macro photos are limited to 12 MP. Available settings vary by iPhone model and iOS version. ProRAW is not a universal replacement for standard capture: it is not available for Portrait mode or Live Photos.
Turn on ProRAW
- On a supported iPhone, open Settings > Camera > Formats and turn on the ProRAW control. The exact options depend on the model and software version.
- Open Camera and select the ProRAW format or resolution option shown for your device before taking a still photo.
- Edit the DNG in Photos or a ProRAW-compatible editor. Export a standard image format when you need a broadly compatible copy to share.

What ProRes does for video
ProRes is Apple’s video format for workflows where editing flexibility matters. Apple describes it as offering higher color fidelity and less compression than more space-efficient options. You can edit ProRes in Photos, iMovie, or compatible third-party software. If an app does not support ProRes, it may transcode the footage to H.264.

ProRes files can be up to 30 times larger than HEVC files, according to Apple. “Up to” is an upper comparison, not a guarantee that every clip will be exactly 30 times larger. Resolution, frame rate, model, storage capacity, and recording method affect which ProRes options are available. Apple’s current support page lists ProRes on iPhone 13 Pro through iPhone 17 Pro models; check the current model-specific details before relying on a particular mode.

Turn on ProRes
- Open Settings > Camera > Formats and enable Apple ProRes on a supported iPhone.
- Open Camera, choose Video, and select the ProRes option available for your model and desired recording settings.
- Record in Video mode. ProRes is not available in Cinematic, Slo-Mo, or Time-lapse.
Apple’s iPhone User Guide for recording ProRes video explains the controls and compatible workflows. Apple also documents transfer by cable, AirDrop with “All Photos Data,” iCloud Photos, and external storage, depending on device and workflow.
When direct-to-drive ProRes recording makes sense
An external drive is optional, not a general requirement for ProRes. Apple documents direct recording to USB-C external storage on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro models. This can be useful when you want to record longer or storage-heavy footage without relying only on the phone’s internal space. The drive does not improve image quality; its role is storage.

For Apple’s specified external-recording modes, a drive must sustain at least 220 MB/s and draw no more than 4.5 W for 4K60 recording. For 4K120 on supported iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro models, Apple specifies at least 440 MB/s and a maximum power draw of 4.5 W. Verify the exact model, recording mode, sustained speed, and power requirements before choosing a drive; not every USB-C storage device meets them.
Which setting should you use?
- Choose ProRAW when you are taking a still photo you expect to edit carefully, especially if you want more control over exposure, color, or white balance.
- Choose ProRes when you are recording video for an editing workflow where higher color fidelity and less compression are useful.
- Use the standard format for everyday photos and clips when smaller files and easy sharing matter more than extra editing flexibility.
Neither format automatically makes every shot better, and neither is necessary just because an iPhone offers it. They preserve more useful information for particular editing needs, at the cost of storage and, for ProRes, potentially a more demanding file-handling workflow.
