On macOS 13 or later, go to Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access. Choose Add, select the app, and click Open. If it is already listed, turn on its switch. This permission is broad, so grant it only when the app’s documented function requires it.
Grant Full Disk Access on macOS 13 or later
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security, then scroll to and open Full Disk Access.
- Click Add, choose the app in the file chooser, and click Open.
- If the app is already in the list, turn on the switch beside it instead of adding it again.
Apple’s Full Disk Access guide describes this permission as allowing access to files across the Mac, including data from apps such as Mail, Messages, Safari, and Home, Time Machine backups, and certain administrative settings for all users.

Use the older path on macOS 12 or earlier
On macOS 12 or earlier, Apple documents the route as System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy. macOS 13 introduced the newer System Settings route. The exact controls may differ by macOS version.

Understand the scope before allowing access
Full Disk Access is a high-scope permission, not a routine fix for every app problem. Before enabling it, verify the app’s identity and check its current documentation to confirm that the feature you need requires this level of access. Apple also recommends reviewing the privacy practices of third-party apps or websites allowed to use system configuration information (Apple guidance).

Full Disk Access versus Files & Folders
These are separate privacy controls. Apple describes Files & Folders as access to specific locations, whereas Full Disk Access is broader (Apple’s privacy settings overview; Apple’s access-control guidance). If an app’s documented feature works with access to a particular location, prefer that narrower permission rather than granting access across the Mac.

- Check that you selected the intended app in the file chooser; similarly named apps or versions may not be the same application.
- Confirm the developer’s current instructions for your app version and macOS version.
- Do not add unrelated apps or broaden other privacy permissions without documentation showing they are needed.
Granting Full Disk Access does not guarantee that a particular app issue will be fixed; the app’s requirements and behavior depend on its developer and version.
