Its swing numbers describe movement detected at the wrist: they are most useful for comparing your own swings over time, not as direct measurements of club delivery or guarantees of better scores. Garmin announced the S72 on October 6, 2026, so the specifications and performance figures below are manufacturer claims rather than independent test results.
What the S72 swing metrics measure
In the driving-range activity, the S72 presents several summaries of how your hands move during a swing. They can help you spot repeatable patterns, but a single number does not establish whether a swing is good or bad.

Hand speed
Hand speed is charted through the swing, with maximum speed and speed at the top and impact highlighted. Garmin also uses a clock-face illustration to show where maximum hand speed occurs and says it ideally happens before impact. This is a timing cue, not a direct reading of clubhead speed or ball speed. Garmin’s S72 announcement describes the feature; the S72 owner’s manual explains the swing metrics.
Backswing length
This measures the interval from swing start until the downswing begins and illustrates the backswing position on a clock face. Use it to check consistency from swing to swing; a longer backswing is not automatically preferable.

- Premium golf smartwatch features a lightweight titanium bezel, durable sapphire lens, ComfortFit fabric band, built-in flashlight, speaker and microphone
- Preloaded with 43,000+ full-color CourseView maps; option to get an enhanced view of the shot ahead with aerial imagery (requires a Garmin Golf membership)
- Up to 16 days in smartwatch mode and 20 hours of battery life in golf activity mode, so you can play round after round
- Look back on your round to see how heart rate affected your performance and start to see trends in how your biometric data and score relate (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- Gain a better understanding of your swing during your range session and after your round with swing metrics, which include hand speed, backswing length, wrist rotation and more
Wrist rotation
Wrist rotation describes lead-wrist rotation from address through the top of the backswing to impact. Comparing this pattern across practice sessions may help you notice changes associated with your own better shots, but it does not identify a technical fault by itself.
Swing plane
The S72 reports the angle of the hand path relative to the ground during the backswing and downswing. Its transition angle is the difference between those two angles. Garmin notes that a suitable plane varies by club, so compare like with like rather than treating one target angle as universal.

- Stunning 1.4” AMOLED display brings more than 43,000 preloaded full-color CourseView maps to life on your wrist
- Look good on and off the course with a lightweight, stylish design and ceramic bezel
- Battery life: up to 16 days of battery life in smartwatch mode and up to 20 hours in GPS mode

- Improved virtual caddie feature shows your shot dispersion data and suggests a club based on a variety of factors, including your historical swing data, elevation, wind speed, wind direction and more
Tempo
Tempo is backswing time divided by downswing time and appears as a ratio. Garmin calls 3:1 ideal based on studies of professional golfers. That is Garmin’s guidance, not an individualized prescription or proof that changing your ratio will improve your score.

- Compare repeated swings with the same club and similar practice conditions; club choice can change the expected swing plane.
- Look for a stable personal pattern or a change over time, rather than chasing a single ideal-looking value.
- Pair the metrics with what happened to the shot. Wrist-observed movement summaries alone do not establish ball flight, contact quality, or the cause of a miss.
- Use the driving-range activity to log practice swings to Garmin Connect and have those sessions contribute to fitness goals, as Garmin describes in its launch announcement.
Course tools and recommendations
Green reading and putting analytics
On select courses, green-reading data shows putt-break direction and average slope percentage. After a round, the Garmin Golf app can report putting measures including speed bias, direction bias, and make rate. Garmin says both features require an active Garmin Golf Membership; course coverage is not universal. The S72 launch announcement describes these requirements.

- Stunning 1.2” color AMOLED display brings 43,000+ preloaded courses to life on your wrist
- Be comfortable on and off the course with the lightweight ComfortFit nylon strap
- Battery life: up to 10 days in smartwatch mode and up to 15 hours in GPS mode
- Get distance to the front, middle and back of the green and navigate bunkers, water hazards and layups with hazard view
- Playslike Distance feature tells you how far each shot truly is, with adjusted yardage for elevation changes
Virtual Caddie
Virtual Caddie combines hole layout, wind information, and your club-performance history to offer a recommendation. Garmin Support lists the S72 series as compatible. Setup requires five rounds with Club Prompt enabled, or qualifying scorecards from another watch with AutoShot data assigned to clubs; compatible CT10 sensors can also help provide the needed club history. Garmin lists mode restrictions, so check its Virtual Caddie compatibility and setup guidance for the specific mode you plan to use. Treat the suggestion as decision support, not a guaranteed club choice or result.
PlaysLike distance
PlaysLike adjusts distance to account for elevation. Garmin’s general support description says some compatible watches can also account for wind and air density, derived from temperature, humidity, and air pressure. Requirements and supported factors vary by device and membership; the general description does not establish which enhanced factors the S72 uses. Check the S72’s own settings and Garmin’s PlaysLike distance guidance rather than assuming every factor is active.

Golf biometrics: useful context, not a diagnosis
Garmin says the S72 can show real-time heart-rate changes around shots and trends after a completed round. Heart rate is context about your body during play; by itself, it does not show that heart rate caused a score outcome. Garmin states that the watch is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose or monitor a medical condition in its announcement.

Shot tracking and compatible accessories
Approach CT10 sensors are optional accessories. The S72 manual says they can automatically track shot location, distance, and club type. That club history can also support Virtual Caddie’s recommendations. A compatible laser rangefinder can provide distance to the flag. See the S72 manual’s wireless-sensor section for the watch’s accessory context.
Sizes, battery claims, and launch price
Garmin’s October 6, 2026 U.S. launch announcement lists 43 mm and 47 mm versions, with bright AMOLED displays, a titanium bezel, sapphire lens, and ComfortFit fabric band. It advertises up to 20 hours on-course and up to 16 days with GPS off; these are maximum manufacturer figures, not independent battery-test results. The same U.S. announcement gives a suggested retail starting price of $799.99. That is the launch price, not a verified current retailer offer.
What is established—and what is not
Garmin’s documentation defines what the S72 reports and describes how certain tools use course, wind, and player-history inputs. It does not establish that a particular metric predicts lower scores or that the watch’s readings outperform other devices. No independent S72 accuracy comparison or verified score-improvement study is established here, so treat the metrics as feedback for observation and practice rather than proof of performance.
