The simplest distinction is that 1G used analogue cellular radio, 2G moved to digital, and later generations developed mobile broadband. The labels do not guarantee a particular speed, and they do not mark a single worldwide switch. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) maps 3G to IMT-2000, 4G to IMT-Advanced, 5G to IMT-2020, and the emerging 6G framework to IMT-2030.
What does a cellular generation mean?
A cellular generation is a broad stage in the development of mobile-network standards and capabilities. The labels help describe how networks evolved, but each generation can include multiple technologies and standards. Different generations can operate side by side, and countries and network operators have adopted them on different schedules.

The ITU provides internationally recognized reference frameworks for the generations from 3G onward. Its historical overview describes the sequence as analogue cellular (1G), digital cellular (2G), IMT-2000 (3G), IMT-Advanced (4G), and IMT-2020 (5G). ITU’s overview of mobile generations also notes the adoption of the IMT-2030 framework for 6G in 2023.
How do 1G through 6G differ?

Is LTE the same as 4G?
In everyday consumer use, LTE is commonly sold as 4G. In the formal ITU designation, however, 4G is associated with IMT-Advanced, and LTE-Advanced—not every LTE release or deployment—was accorded that official designation. The ITU also documents the broader use of “4G” for LTE, HSPA+, WiMAX, and evolved 3G technologies that preceded full IMT-Advanced compliance.
So the practical answer is yes: LTE is commonly called 4G. The standards-history answer is more specific: LTE-Advanced is the LTE technology named under IMT-Advanced. That distinction does not mean every LTE connection has the same capabilities or that ordinary use of “4G LTE” is invalid. See the ITU-D overview of IMT and its IMT FAQ.

Does 5G guarantee a certain speed?
No. 5G identifies the IMT-2020 generation family, not a guaranteed speed or latency for an individual connection. The ITU’s framework includes capabilities and targets, while the experience a device receives depends on the network deployment and conditions.
For example, the ITU’s 2022 mobile-broadband overview lists a 100 Mbit/s user data rate and a connection density of at least 1,000,000 devices per km² as IMT-2020 requirements. These are framework-level requirements, not promises that every phone will achieve that data rate or that a network will deliver identical performance everywhere. What do standalone and non-standalone 5G mean?
These terms describe how a 5G network is built, not how strong its signal is or how fast a particular user’s connection will be.
- Standalone (SA): Uses a new 5G radio access and core architecture without requiring an underlying 4G network.
- Non-standalone (NSA): Uses an existing 4G network as an anchor for 5G deployment.
The ITU’s 5G backgrounder describes these deployment models. A phone displaying a 5G indicator does not, by that fact alone, reveal which architecture is in use or establish the connection’s actual performance.

Is 6G available yet?
The ITU established the IMT-2030 framework for 6G in 2023, but that is not the same as having final 6G radio standards or widely available commercial 6G service. The framework sets a direction for future systems while the detailed technology selection and standards process continue. The ITU describes final standards approval as a future step expected by 2030.

How to read generation labels without overinterpreting them
- Treat the “G” number as a broad generation label, not a complete description of a network.
- For 3G, 4G, and 5G, distinguish the ITU framework name—IMT-2000, IMT-Advanced, or IMT-2020—from a particular product or operator’s branding.
- For 4G, remember that everyday marketing usage is broader than the formal IMT-Advanced designation.
- For 5G, separate framework targets from the speed or latency a user actually receives.
- For 6G, distinguish the established IMT-2030 framework from technology standards and commercial networks that are still future work.
