What DLSS Does: Upscaling, Frame Generation, and RTX Hardware Support

DLSS includes several distinct NVIDIA rendering features. Learn what each one does, which RTX generations support it, and how to verify support in a specific game.

DLSS is a collection of NVIDIA rendering features, not one setting with one effect. Super Resolution reconstructs an image at a higher output resolution; Frame Generation creates additional frames; Ray Reconstruction reconstructs ray-traced imagery; and DLAA applies AI anti-aliasing at native resolution. Which features you can use depends on your RTX generation and whether a particular game implements them.

What DLSS does—and why the feature name matters

NVIDIA describes DLSS as a suite of neural-rendering technologies that uses RTX Tensor Cores. Its features address different parts of rendering, so “DLSS on” does not tell you by itself whether a game is rendering at a lower resolution, generating frames, processing ray-traced images, or applying anti-aliasing at native resolution. The exact options depend on the game and its implementation.

The distinction matters when you are diagnosing image quality, trying to raise the displayed frame rate, or checking whether your graphics card supports a feature. For example, Super Resolution and Frame Generation can both affect the number of frames you see, but they do so in different ways. Neither should be treated as a universal performance switch.

NVIDIA’s DLSS technology page says Super Resolution samples multiple lower-resolution images and uses motion data and feedback from prior frames to construct higher-quality images. That description is NVIDIA’s account of the technology and its aims; the material cited here does not provide independent, across-game image-quality or performance measurements.

What each DLSS feature does

Feature Rendering job What to expect
DLSS Super Resolution Reconstructs a higher-resolution output from multiple lower-resolution images, using motion data and information from prior frames. It is temporal image reconstruction, not simply enlarging one image. NVIDIA describes it as a way to improve performance while aiming for high image quality; actual results depend on the game and settings.
DLSS Frame Generation Uses AI to create additional frames between traditionally rendered frames. It can increase the number of frames displayed, but that number is not the same as the number of frames the game renders or a promise of an equivalent increase in responsiveness.
DLSS Multi Frame Generation Creates multiple additional frames for each rendered frame. NVIDIA’s 6X mode means one rendered frame plus as many as five generated frames. This is a mode capability, not a universal performance result.
DLSS Ray Reconstruction Uses AI-based reconstruction for ray-traced scenes; NVIDIA describes it as replacing hand-tuned denoisers. It targets the reconstruction of ray-traced imagery. Visual benefits are a design goal described by NVIDIA, not an independent result established here.
DLAA Applies AI-based anti-aliasing at native resolution. Unlike Super Resolution, DLAA is not using a lower input resolution to upscale; its emphasis is anti-aliasing and image quality at native resolution.

Super Resolution: reconstructing the image

Super Resolution takes information from multiple lower-resolution images rather than treating a single frame as a photograph to stretch. NVIDIA says it combines motion data with feedback from previous frames to build the higher-resolution output. This helps explain why it belongs to image reconstruction: the feature is concerned with what each output image looks like, not with inserting an extra frame between two rendered ones.

The words “higher resolution” describe the output target, not a guarantee that every fine detail will match a native-resolution render in every game. The NVIDIA materials describe the method and its intended image quality, but they do not establish a universal visual comparison. To judge a particular title, compare it yourself at the same output resolution and graphics settings, and remember that results can vary by scene and implementation.

Frame Generation: creating intermediate frames

Frame Generation creates additional frames between frames rendered by the game. Because generated frames add to the displayed count, the counter can rise even though the game is not rendering every displayed image in the traditional way. That is why a high displayed frame rate should not be read as an equal increase in game simulation updates or input responsiveness.

NVIDIA says Reflex is part of its approach to responsiveness with Frame Generation. That is not a guarantee of a particular latency result in every game or configuration. The title, system and settings matter, and the materials here do not provide an independent latency figure that applies broadly.

Multi Frame Generation and the meaning of 6X

NVIDIA’s 2026 DLSS 4.5 announcement describes Multi Frame Generation as able to generate up to five additional frames for each rendered frame on supported RTX 50 Series hardware. In the stated 6X mode, one rendered frame and five generated frames make six displayed frames in the multiplier. “Up to” is important: it describes the mode’s stated capability, not a promise that every game, scene or system will show a sixfold increase in a useful performance measure.

Do not interpret 6X as six times the native rendering work, six times the simulation rate, or six times the responsiveness. It describes the ratio of generated frames to rendered frames in that mode. Mode names and implementations can change, so use the feature label shown by the game or driver for your setup. See NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 Multi Frame Generation announcement for the vendor’s description.

Ray Reconstruction and DLAA

Ray Reconstruction targets ray-traced image reconstruction. NVIDIA says it replaces hand-tuned denoisers with an AI-based approach. It is therefore not another name for upscaling or frame insertion. Whether it helps a particular image is a title-specific question; NVIDIA’s stated design goal should not be mistaken for an independent visual test.

DLAA uses AI-based anti-aliasing at native resolution. This makes it different from Super Resolution: DLAA focuses on anti-aliasing without first lowering the input resolution to upscale. If the game offers both, they represent different rendering choices rather than two names for the same feature.

Which RTX generations support each DLSS feature?

NVIDIA’s current feature matrix distinguishes hardware support by feature. As listed in its DLSS documentation, the supported RTX generations are:

Feature listed by NVIDIA RTX 20 Series RTX 30 Series RTX 40 Series RTX 50 Series
Super Resolution Supported Supported Supported Supported
Ray Reconstruction Supported Supported Supported Supported
DLAA Supported Supported Supported Supported
Frame Generation Not listed as supported Not listed as supported Supported Supported
Dynamic Multi Frame Generation Not listed as supported Not listed as supported Not listed as supported Supported
3D-Guided Neural Rendering Not listed as supported Not listed as supported Not listed as supported Supported

This is a feature-by-generation summary, not a guarantee that every card within a generation can use every feature in every title. NVIDIA Developer separately identifies Multi Frame Generation as powered by GeForce RTX 50 Series and RTX PRO Blackwell Generation GPUs with fifth-generation Tensor Cores. NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 FAQ identifies Super Resolution across RTX GPUs and Dynamic/6X Multi Frame Generation for RTX 50 Series. Check the current NVIDIA DLSS documentation and DLSS 4.5 FAQ for the latest feature definitions and hardware details.

Can an RTX 30 Series card use DLSS?

Yes, for the features NVIDIA lists across RTX 20, 30, 40 and 50 Series: Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction and DLAA. The current matrix does not list standard Frame Generation for RTX 30 Series, and it lists Dynamic Multi Frame Generation as RTX 50 Series-only. So “RTX 30 supports DLSS” is accurate only when you name the feature; it does not mean every feature carrying the DLSS name is available on that card.

Why GPU generation is only one part of compatibility

A supported GPU cannot add a feature to a game that does not implement it. Support is also feature-specific: a title may offer Super Resolution without offering Frame Generation or Ray Reconstruction. Driver or NVIDIA app override availability can also vary by title. Verify the game, the exact feature, and the settings it exposes rather than relying on the broad label “DLSS compatible.”

How to check whether your game and GPU support the feature you want

  1. Identify the exact feature. Decide whether you want image reconstruction with Super Resolution, generated frames, ray-traced image reconstruction, or native-resolution anti-aliasing with DLAA. If you are asking about “DLSS performance,” clarify whether you mean a higher displayed frame count, a higher output resolution, or a particular visual result.
  2. Check the GPU generation against NVIDIA’s feature matrix. Use the table above as a starting point, then confirm the current listing on NVIDIA’s DLSS documentation. A GPU’s generation establishes only which features may be compatible at the hardware level.
  3. Look up the specific title on NVIDIA’s game list. NVIDIA’s DLSS and GeForce RTX games list marks feature support title by title. The list says it was last updated September 29, 2026; that date is the list’s update date, not an independent verification of every implementation.
  4. Open the game’s graphics or display settings. Check which DLSS options the title actually exposes. Read the labels carefully: a Super Resolution selector and a Frame Generation toggle do different jobs. The exact menu path and available modes vary by game, so there is no single universal setting path.
  5. Check the NVIDIA app or driver path only if relevant. NVIDIA app overrides are title-specific. Do not assume that an override exists for every game, or that it exposes every DLSS feature supported by your GPU.
  6. Evaluate the result using the right measure. For image quality, compare scenes at the same output resolution and settings. For performance, distinguish traditionally rendered frames from generated frames, and do not use a displayed multiplier as a direct measure of responsiveness. A meaningful comparison also needs matching game, resolution, settings, hardware and driver conditions.

Does DLSS increase FPS?

It can increase the number of frames displayed, but the answer depends on which DLSS feature you mean. Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution output from lower-resolution inputs; NVIDIA positions it as a way to boost frame rates while maintaining image quality. Frame Generation adds generated frames between traditionally rendered frames, so it can raise the displayed frame count. Multi Frame Generation can add several frames per rendered frame in its supported modes.

Those mechanisms are not interchangeable, and a higher displayed count is not a guarantee of a proportionate improvement in how quickly the game simulates events or responds to input. The available evidence here establishes NVIDIA’s feature descriptions and hardware support, not independent benchmark results across games. For an actual comparison, use the same title, scene, resolution, settings, hardware and driver, and report whether the number refers to rendered frames, generated frames or displayed frames.

Common compatibility mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Assuming “RTX” means every DLSS feature works. Match the feature to its generation requirements; for example, NVIDIA lists standard Frame Generation for RTX 40 and 50 Series, while its current matrix lists Dynamic Multi Frame Generation for RTX 50 Series.
  • Assuming a hardware feature is present in every game. Check NVIDIA’s title list and then confirm the option in the game’s own settings. A GPU capability does not establish game support.
  • Calling generated frames “rendered frames.” Keep the terms separate when interpreting counters and comparisons. Generated frames increase displayed images; they do not mean the game performed the same amount of traditional rendering for each one.
  • Treating NVIDIA’s image-quality language as independent testing. NVIDIA’s pages explain the intended design and capabilities. They do not establish a universal visual result or latency outcome for every game and system.
  • Reading a named mode as a guaranteed result. “Up to five additional frames” in 6X mode is a vendor-stated maximum mode capability. It does not promise that every supported game or scene will deliver an equivalent performance or responsiveness gain.

What to remember when choosing a DLSS setting

Start with the job you want done. Choose Super Resolution when the game offers reconstruction from lower-resolution inputs; consider Frame Generation when you specifically want generated intermediate frames and your GPU and game support it; use Ray Reconstruction for a title’s ray-traced reconstruction option; and understand DLAA as native-resolution anti-aliasing. Then confirm the exact GPU generation, title support and in-game options. DLSS is not one universal switch, and its feature names describe materially different rendering operations.
