How to Fix Blurry or Ghosted Images After Enabling DLSS

A controlled, title-specific way to troubleshoot blurry detail, ghost trails, and flicker after enabling DLSS—without assuming one mode or fix works for every game.

If DLSS looks soft or leaves trails behind moving objects, first identify which artifact you are seeing, then compare settings in the same scene. Try a higher-quality DLSS mode, update the game and NVIDIA software, and test native rendering or the game’s TAA option. If ghosting or smudgy textures persist only in one title, its DLSS integration may be responsible; some causes require a developer fix rather than a player setting.

First identify the artifact

“Blurry” and “ghosted” describe different problems. A useful diagnosis starts by checking whether the image looks wrong while the camera is still, only during motion, or in a way that flickers over time. That distinction helps you choose a meaningful comparison instead of changing several settings at once.

Soft detail while the scene is still

If stationary objects, fine textures, or distant detail look consistently soft with DLSS enabled, the reconstruction may not have enough input detail for the output resolution and scene. DLSS Super Resolution builds the output image from a lower-resolution game render; a lower input resolution gives it fewer source pixels to work with. NVIDIA notes that image quality also varies with the output resolution, quality settings, and the game’s implementation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look at more than one kind of detail. A nearby texture, a thin edge, and a distant object may not behave alike, and a single soft-looking surface does not establish that the entire image is blurry. Note whether the softness remains when both the scene and camera are still. If it does, compare the same detail at a higher DLSS quality setting and with DLSS disabled, rather than relying on memory of how the game looked in another scene.

Trails behind moving objects

Ghosting is a visible trail, duplicate-looking edge, or lingering image behind an object as it moves. It may be subtle when the camera and scene are still, then become clear during motion. A title’s motion data and exposure handling can affect this behavior, so a trail that persists across DLSS modes is not necessarily something a player can repair with a graphics toggle.

When checking for ghosting, repeat a short camera pan or watch the same moving object. A static screenshot may show a soft edge but cannot show whether an image lingers behind motion. Keep the camera movement consistent between tests: a faster pan or a different direction can make temporal artifacts look different and undermine the comparison.

Flicker or unstable edges

Flickering detail, shimmering edges, and ghost trails are related temporal artifacts, but they are not interchangeable. Watch the same fine edge or texture through the same camera movement: does it leave a trail, flash or shimmer, or simply lack detail? Record what you see rather than describing every moving-image problem as “blur.”

Run a controlled comparison before changing more settings

For a useful test, keep the game scene, output resolution, camera view, and movement as consistent as possible. A different scene may have different detail, motion, lighting, or implementation behavior; comparing it with the first scene does not show that a setting alone caused the change.

  1. Record the baseline. Note the game and version, output resolution, current DLSS mode, and whether the artifact appears while stationary, during motion, or both. If convenient, capture a short clip that includes the affected scene and movement.
  2. Choose one repeatable view. Return to the same camera position and repeat the same pan or movement. Inspect a stationary fine detail, a moving object, and an edge that flickers, if those are where the problem appears.
  3. Change one setting. Raise DLSS quality by one available step and repeat the scene and movement. Avoid changing output resolution, several graphics options, and the DLSS mode together; otherwise you will not know which change mattered.
  4. Compare the result, not just the still image. Check stationary detail, edge stability during motion, trails, flicker, and frame rate. A mode that improves one of these may not improve all of them.
  5. Keep a record. Write down the mode and result for each run. This makes it easier to reverse an unhelpful change and gives a developer a reproducible report if the artifact remains.

Think of the baseline as the control for every later test. For example, if you begin with a Performance-mode run, compare the next run in the same location and at the same output resolution after moving up one mode. If the image looks sharper but the frame rate is lower, record both observations; do not call the test a complete success based on sharpness alone. If the artifact changes only during a particular movement, note that too.

It can help to separate your observations into four questions: Is fine detail clearer while still? Are edges more stable during movement? Are there fewer trails or less flicker? What happened to frame rate? These are distinct outcomes. A setting may improve one and leave another unchanged, and the best choice depends on which trade-off matters in your game.

Try a higher-quality DLSS mode

Move one step toward a higher-quality mode—for example, from Performance to Balanced, or from Balanced to Quality if the game offers those choices. A higher input resolution generally gives the reconstruction more source detail, but can cost performance. The actual image and frame-rate change depends on the title, output resolution, settings, and scene, so test rather than assuming a particular mode is best.

NVIDIA’s example for its app override describes Quality as using 67% input resolution, Performance as 50%, and Ultra Performance as 33%. These are figures for that cited example, not guaranteed ratios for every game, version, or implementation. Do not infer a mode’s exact input scale for your title unless the game or applicable NVIDIA feature specifies it.

If the game provides a render-scale control or a supported NVIDIA app custom scaling override, a higher input scale can be a useful test. The override only applies to supported titles and available features; a menu or option described for one release may not match the current app interface. If you cannot find the feature, confirm that your title and software support it rather than assuming a missing control is a fault.

Do not assume you must use the highest-quality setting permanently. The purpose of the test is to see whether more input detail changes the symptom and whether that change is worth its performance cost in your particular title. If Quality reduces the blur but makes performance unacceptable, a middle option may be a more practical compromise. If the trail remains nearly the same across modes, that result is useful evidence that simply changing the mode may not address the cause.

How the main comparison options differ

Option What to compare Likely trade-off or limitation
Higher-quality DLSS mode Stationary detail, motion trails, flicker, and frame rate against the current mode Higher input resolution generally costs performance; the image-quality result is game-dependent.
Native rendering Whether the artifact also appears with DLSS disabled at the same output resolution and in the same scene It provides a comparison point, not a guarantee that the image will look better in every title or setting.
Game’s TAA or another upscaler Detail and temporal stability using the title’s own alternative Alternatives can also ghost or flicker, and preference varies by game and settings.

NVIDIA explicitly notes that the preferred option varies with resolution, quality settings, and game implementation. Use these as controlled alternatives, not as a universal ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a fair comparison, hold the output resolution and scene constant even when switching to native rendering or another upscaler. Check the same surface and repeat the same camera movement. If the game does not offer a particular alternative, skip it; there is no need to install or force a separate option just to complete the comparison.

Update the game and NVIDIA software

Install an available game update and update the applicable NVIDIA driver and app, then repeat the same comparison. A game update may change its rendering integration, while driver and app updates can affect supported NVIDIA features. Record the versions you tested so a later comparison is not confused with a different software setup.

If you are testing an NVIDIA app DLSS override, check that the game is listed as supported and that the required software is installed. NVIDIA’s cited release notes specify GeForce Game Ready or Studio driver 572.83 WHQL or newer for that release’s override feature. That requirement is specific to the cited release; availability, support, and menu labels can change, so it should not be treated as a timeless requirement for every DLSS function.

Do not treat unofficial replacement DLSS files as a generic troubleshooting step. The supported path is to test the game’s exposed options and applicable NVIDIA software, then report a persistent title-specific artifact with enough detail to reproduce it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Updates are worth testing, but they are not a promise that every artifact will disappear. After an update, return to the same recorded scene and repeat the comparison instead of judging from a different area of the game. If you use an app override, verify that the title is supported and the feature is available in your current software; a control described in NVIDIA’s release notes may have changed or may not apply to your game.

Compare DLSS with native rendering or the game’s alternative

Turn DLSS off for one controlled run, then compare native rendering or the game’s TAA or other upscaler in the same scene and at the same output resolution. Repeat the same camera movement. This tells you whether the symptom is tied to DLSS in that title, appears with more than one rendering option, or is difficult to reproduce consistently.

If the artifact appears only with DLSS in one game, that is evidence about that game and test setup—not proof that every DLSS title has the same problem. If TAA or another option also produces trails or flicker, the symptom may not be unique to DLSS. Keep the comparison focused on the image characteristics that matter to you: detail at rest, stability in motion, ghost trails, flicker, and frame rate.

Native rendering is a reference point, not an automatic quality verdict. A comparison is most informative when you identify what differs: perhaps stationary texture detail improves, while flicker remains; or DLSS looks acceptable at rest but leaves a trail during a pan. Recording those separate results is more useful than a broad conclusion such as “DLSS is blurry,” especially if you later ask the game developer for help.

Why a title’s DLSS integration can cause persistent artifacts

DLSS uses information supplied by the game as part of its reconstruction. NVIDIA’s Streamline SDK 2.4 integration checklist identifies several implementation issues that can contribute to visible problems. These are developer-side factors, not ordinary player-facing switches.

  • Inaccurate motion vectors: Motion information that does not correctly describe object movement can increase ghosting.
  • Improper exposure: Exposure handling can contribute to ghosting and flicker.
  • Missing mip-map bias: NVIDIA’s checklist says that when mip-map bias is not set appropriately while DLSS is enabled, textures may look blurry, smudgy, or low resolution.
  • DLSS placed after post-processing: An unsuitable order in the rendering pipeline can introduce image artifacts.

These SDK examples explain possible causes; they do not diagnose a particular game. Players generally cannot correct inaccurate motion vectors, exposure data, mip-map bias, or rendering order from the graphics menu. If a repeatable problem survives the player-side comparisons, the developer may need to investigate the integration.

The distinction matters because a player can test the visible options, but cannot normally inspect or repair the internal data sent by a game to DLSS. Changing modes can help determine whether the symptom changes; it does not rewrite motion vectors or correct how the game handles exposure. NVIDIA’s checklist is guidance for developers diagnosing an integration, not a set of hidden fixes for users to toggle.

What resolution and DLSS history can—and cannot—tell you

NVIDIA’s undated FAQ gives a historical illustration of how much input information can differ: it describes 4K DLSS as commonly using 3.5–5.5 million input pixels, compared with 1.0–1.5 million at 1920×1080. Those figures describe the examples and era covered by that FAQ. They are not universal current mode ratios and should not be used to calculate the input scale for a particular game today.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NVIDIA’s 2021 DLSS 2.3 article described an update that made smarter use of motion vectors to improve object detail in motion, particle reconstruction, ghosting, and temporal stability. That is historical context for an update, not a claim that every current title or DLSS model behaves identically. A game’s own version and implementation still matter to the symptom you observe.

The practical takeaway is not to calculate a mode from old pixel examples. Use the choices the game currently exposes, or a supported NVIDIA app override if available, and compare the output directly. Historical documentation can explain why input resolution and motion information matter, but it cannot tell you which current mode will look best in a specific game.

When and how to report the problem

If motion ghosting or soft textures remain across DLSS modes after you have updated and run controlled comparisons, send the game developer a concise, reproducible report. Include only details you have actually checked.

  • Game title and version.
  • Output resolution and DLSS mode for each comparison.
  • Driver and NVIDIA app versions, if applicable.
  • The scene, camera view, and movement that reveal the artifact.
  • Whether the problem is visible while stationary, during motion, or both.
  • A short capture showing the same scene with the affected setting and the comparison setting.

Describe the visible behavior precisely—such as a trail behind a moving object, smudgy stationary texture, or flickering edge—rather than guessing at the game’s internal cause. The SDK checklist gives developers possible areas to inspect, but only the game team can confirm whether a particular integration issue is responsible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A useful report explains the comparison as well as the complaint: for instance, name the DLSS mode used, say whether the same scene was tested with DLSS disabled or another available option, and state whether the problem changed when moving from one DLSS mode to another. If you have not checked a version or setting, leave it out rather than guessing. A short, repeatable example is more actionable than a list of unrelated graphics changes.

Common troubleshooting mistakes to avoid

  • Changing several settings at once: This makes it hard to identify what improved or worsened the image.
  • Comparing different scenes: Different detail and motion can make a mode appear better or worse for reasons unrelated to the setting you changed.
  • Assuming “higher quality” always wins: A higher-quality mode generally uses more input detail, but frame rate and image quality are title- and scene-dependent.
  • Assuming an alternative is artifact-free: Native rendering, TAA, and other upscalers are comparison options; TAA can also ghost or flicker.
  • Applying an old feature requirement universally: The 572.83 WHQL requirement applies to the cited NVIDIA app override release, not every DLSS feature or future app version.
  • Replacing game files as a first-line fix: Unofficial file replacement is not a general remedy; use supported settings, updates, and a reproducible developer report.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does DLSS look blurry in my game?

DLSS Super Resolution reconstructs the output from a lower-resolution game render, so lower input resolution gives it fewer source pixels. The result also depends on output resolution, settings, and the game’s implementation. Compare a higher-quality DLSS mode in the same scene; persistent smudgy textures may involve the game’s integration.

How do I reduce ghosting after enabling DLSS?

Repeat the same camera movement in the same scene while comparing available DLSS modes, then compare with DLSS off or the game’s TAA or other upscaler. Update the game and applicable NVIDIA software. If trails persist across modes in one title, report the scene, resolution, mode, software versions, and a short comparison capture to the developer; motion-vector or exposure handling can be developer-side causes.

Which DLSS mode should I use?

There is no universally best mode. A higher-quality mode generally uses more input detail and can improve image quality, but it may cost performance, and results vary by game, resolution, settings, and scene. Compare modes at the same output resolution and choose the trade-off that works for you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does TAA eliminate DLSS ghosting?

Not necessarily. TAA is a comparison option, but it can also ghost or flicker. Compare the same scene and movement with each option rather than assuming either is artifact-free.

Can I fix blurry textures by changing a player-facing setting?

Sometimes a higher-quality DLSS mode helps, but NVIDIA’s Streamline SDK 2.4 identifies missing mip-map bias as a possible cause of blurry, smudgy, or low-resolution textures. That is an integration detail generally handled by the game developer, not an ordinary player toggle.

Do I need driver 572.83 WHQL for DLSS?

NVIDIA’s cited release notes specify GeForce Game Ready or Studio driver 572.83 WHQL or newer for that release’s NVIDIA app DLSS override feature. That is not a timeless requirement for every DLSS feature. Check current support and requirements for your title and app.

Should I replace the game’s DLSS files to fix ghosting?

Unofficial DLSS file replacement is not a generic troubleshooting fix. Start with supported in-game options, applicable game and NVIDIA software updates, and controlled comparisons; report persistent title-specific artifacts to the developer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Identify whether you are seeing stationary softness, motion trails, or flicker, then compare one setting at a time in the same scene and at the same output resolution. A higher-quality DLSS mode may improve detail but can cost performance; native rendering and TAA are useful comparisons, not guaranteed fixes. If the artifact persists in one title across modes, document a repeatable example and contact its developer, since some causes are integration-side.
