What Discord Game Overlay does
Game Overlay places parts of Discord over a game so you can interact with Discord without switching windows. Depending on what you enable, it can show text messages, identify who is speaking or muted in voice chat, let you manage calls and notifications, and show or hide overlay windows. Discord also documents starting a game screen share from the overlay.

Which games support Discord Overlay?
Discord does not provide a definitive, current game-by-game compatibility list in its current support articles. Its known-issue guidance says the revamped overlay is expected to work with nearly all games, but that is not a guarantee for any particular title. Older lists of problematic games describe the legacy overlay and should not be treated as a current supported-games roster.

Check the specific game rather than assuming support from its name or from a built-in Discord feature. Some games have developer-created Discord integrations; those are separate from Discord Game Overlay and do not establish that the overlay itself works. Discord describes the revamped overlay’s compatibility limits in its known-issue article.
Supported systems and display modes
Discord’s current support guidance lists Windows 10 and Windows 11. It says Game Overlay does not function on macOS or Linux. The revamped overlay works with windowed fullscreen and borderless fullscreen, but not true fullscreen, where other desktop applications cannot display over the game. The overlay also hides when the game window is not focused.

If you need to play in true fullscreen, Discord says a global “Enable legacy overlay” option may be available; Discord notes that this option could be removed in the future. Its availability should not be assumed to be permanent.

- In Discord, open User Settings > Overlay.
- Turn on Enable Overlay. Enable messages in the same settings area if you want text chat to appear.
- Open the game and check whether the overlay appears while the game window is focused. Discord’s documented default overlay hotkey is Shift+`; you can change the controls and appearance in settings.
- Use the overlay’s available windows for chat, voice, notifications, calls, or screen sharing. To share a game, follow Discord’s Go Live and Screen Share instructions.
What to check if the overlay does not appear
- Check the operating system: Discord lists Windows 10 and 11 as supported; macOS and Linux are not supported.
- Check the display mode: switch from true fullscreen to windowed or borderless windowed mode.
- Check focus: the overlay is hidden when the game window is not focused.
- Check message visibility: messages will not display for a muted server, DM, or group, or while Streamer Mode is enabled.
- Check game-specific stability: if enabling the overlay causes lag, a crash, or another game problem, disable it for that game.
For an overlay-related crash, Discord asks users to collect the hook log from %appdata%discord .0.***highest-number***modulesdiscord_hookhook and submit a support ticket describing the problem and affected game.

When System Helper might matter
Discord’s experimental System Helper can help keybinds register in games running with elevated permissions. It is available only to certain users on Windows desktop, and Discord says the overlay’s core functionality remains usable without it. It is not a general prerequisite for Game Overlay.
