Those are one publisher’s viewing recommendations, not guarantees or universal age limits. Every film includes dinosaur attacks, deaths, or sustained peril, so choose title by title and account for how your child handles frightening chases and suspense.

What matters more than the age number
Fear and suspense
Think about whether your child enjoys chase scenes and sudden scares or finds them upsetting. Jurassic Park III, Fallen Kingdom, and Dominion are specifically described as featuring extreme or sustained peril, prolonged terror, or jump-worthy scenes. Content descriptions can help you anticipate the kind of tension, but they cannot predict an individual child’s response.

Attacks, deaths, and other material
The dinosaurs are not merely exciting creatures on screen: across the series, they attack people and animals, and characters die. The Jurassic World guide notes a higher body count than earlier films. Guides also mention other age-sensitive content, including swearing in the original; check the full entry for the particular film your family is considering.

Ratings depend on territory
PG-13 is a US classification, not a universal minimum viewing age. The BBFC uses a separate UK system. Its guidance says U-rated content is suitable for all ages, while cautioning that not every U-rated film is aimed at children and recommending that viewers check film-specific advice. Use the local classification and content notes rather than translating one country’s label into another’s. BBFC: Our Age Ratings.
Is the original Jurassic Park suitable for kids?
It may be the best first choice for an older child who can manage suspense, but its 11+ Common Sense Media recommendation does not make it gentle viewing. The guide flags attacks, deaths, and frightening chases. The BBFC also notes some language and a comic scene in which a young girl is splashed when a harmless dinosaur sneezes. The BBFC’s full content advice gives more context.

A practical way to choose
- Check the film’s full parent guide and local classification, not just its age label.
- Consider your child’s past reactions to suspense, sudden scares, animal danger, and character deaths.
- If a specific scene or type of content is a concern, review scene-level advice where available before choosing the film.
- Make the decision for that child and that film; an age recommendation is a screening aid, not a promise that the viewing will feel comfortable.
Common Sense Media’s suggestions are editorial guidance, not medical or developmental research. No cited evidence establishes a single minimum age that works for every child.
