Small Jurassic predators did not all share one diet or hunting style. Fossil teeth and body shape can suggest what some animals ate and how they moved, but they rarely prove a complete menu or a specific hunting tactic. For example, Archaeopteryx had small, sharp teeth compatible with eating insects and potentially small vertebrates, while Coelophysis’s light build and long tail have been associated with speed and agility—not proof of pack hunting or a particular attack.
What evidence tells us what a small predator ate?
Evidence varies in strength. A fossil preserved with prey in its gut can directly show what that individual had eaten. Teeth and skeletons offer clues about possible foods or movement, but those clues require interpretation. Bite marks show that an animal fed on a bone; by themselves, they do not tell us whether the animal killed its prey or scavenged it.

- Gut contents: prey remains preserved in a particular fossil can provide direct evidence of that animal’s meal.
- Teeth: tooth shape can suggest how an animal processed food, but it does not establish its entire diet.
- Bite marks: marks on bones document feeding contact, though identifying the animal that made them—and whether it made a kill—can be difficult.
- Body form: features associated with speed or agility can inform hypotheses about movement, not prove a hunting sequence.
The Australian Museum discusses these kinds of evidence and their limits in its overview of dinosaur feeding and attack evidence.

The Australian Museum describes Archaeopteryx as having small jaws and sharp teeth compatible with eating insects. It also notes that teeth of this kind could catch small lizards, fish, and mammals. That makes both insects and small vertebrates plausible prey, but tooth shape alone cannot show how often Archaeopteryx ate each or whether its diet was limited to those foods. The museum’s discussion of carnivore teeth and diet is a useful reminder that anatomy points to possibilities rather than a complete menu.

How did Coelophysis hunt?
The Australian Museum associates Coelophysis’s slender, lightweight skeleton and long tail with speed and agility. Those features support a cautious interpretation that it could move quickly. They do not establish whether it chased prey, ambushed it, hunted in groups, or used one consistent capture method. A body adapted for agile movement is evidence about locomotion, not a recording of behavior.
Do bite marks show that a predator made a kill?
No. A bite mark shows feeding contact with a bone, but the animal may have scavenged a carcass rather than killed its prey. It can also be difficult to identify which animal left the mark. In a 2020 study of the Upper Jurassic Mygatt-Moore Quarry, Drumheller and colleagues found at least one theropod bite mark on 684 of 2,368 fossils—28.885% of the surveyed fossils. That is a statistic about one fossil assemblage, not the share of small predators that hunted successfully or a general rate for dinosaurs. The authors discuss feeding, scavenging, and possible cannibalism, while noting challenges in attributing traces to a particular animal (PLOS One, 2020).

Were all small Jurassic predators meat-eaters?
It is not safe to assign every small predator the same diet. A 2026 synthesis abstract reports varied diets among troodontids, with stomach contents and gastric pellets supporting the ingestion of both plant and animal material (PubMed-indexed abstract). Troodontids span the Jurassic and Cretaceous, so this broad clade-level finding does not show that every small Jurassic predator—or every troodontid—was omnivorous.
