A small Jurassic fossil cannot be identified as a juvenile—or as a new species—by size alone. Paleontologists test how mature the animal was and whether its anatomical differences from known animals could be explained by growth, ordinary variation, or preservation. Those conclusions are strongest when several kinds of evidence agree; a fragmentary specimen may not allow a definite answer.
Why size does not settle the question
A small specimen could be a juvenile of a larger species, a fully grown member of a smaller-bodied species, or an animal whose adult size is not yet known. Size becomes useful only when compared with a suitable set of specimens and interpreted alongside other evidence.

There is no single meaning of “adult” that answers every question. Reproductive maturity and skeletal maturity do not necessarily occur at the same time, and an animal may reproduce before its skeleton has finished developing. Paleontologists therefore avoid treating a single size or maturity marker as a universal test. [c001]
What clues in the skeleton can show maturity?
Researchers examine bone texture, patterns of fusion between skeletal elements, and anatomical features that may develop or change as an animal grows. They compare these traits with specimens believed to represent different growth stages.

Fusion can help indicate skeletal maturity, but it does not by itself prove reproductive maturity or show that the animal had reached its final size. These clues are more useful when interpreted together with the specimen’s anatomy and, where possible, bone microstructure. [c001] [c003]
What bone growth marks can—and cannot—tell us
When suitable bone is available, researchers may examine a thin section under a microscope. Its tissue organization and preserved growth marks can provide evidence about growth history and relative maturity. This is called bone histology.

Histology is not a simple age stamp. Bone remodeling can erase earlier growth information, and different bones—or different regions of the same bone—may preserve different signals. A 2024 review highlights this loss of evidence and recommends studying a series of individuals at different growth stages where possible. [c002]
How comparisons across growth stages distinguish growth from taxonomy
A growth series—specimens of the same group at different developmental stages—lets researchers test whether anatomical differences change in a pattern consistent with growth. They ask whether the small individual shares diagnostic features with larger specimens and whether its distinctive traits could plausibly develop or change as it matured.

- Utahraptor was a large theropod dinosaur that lived during the Early Cretaceous period, known for its sharp claws and hunting abilities
- This replica is based on a real Utahraptor fossil discovered in Utah, accurately capturing the shape and detail of the original claw
- The Utahraptor’s curved claw was used for gripping and slashing, making it a key tool for hunting prey
- Cast in durable resin, this 5.5-inch replica offers museum-quality detail and texture
- Made in the USA, this fossil reproduction is perfect for collectors, educators, and dinosaur enthusiasts
Comparisons also help researchers consider alternatives to a species distinction, including variation within a species, possible sexual dimorphism, and differences caused by preservation or incomplete material. Taxonomic decisions can be difficult when these possibilities cannot be ruled out. [c003]
What evidence supports calling it a new species?
A distinct-species interpretation is more persuasive when diagnostic anatomical differences cannot be adequately explained by immaturity and when the animal’s developmental stage has been assessed independently, where evidence allows. Histology can strengthen the case, but it cannot replace comparative anatomy or adequate sampling.

A sauropod histology study illustrates why maturity evidence informs, but does not settle, taxonomy: researchers assessed questionable specimens using growth stages and identified two Camarasaurus morphotypes. They considered separate species and sexual dimorphism as possible explanations. [c004]

- Growth-related anatomy: Could the distinguishing traits plausibly change as the animal matured?
- Histology: Are growth signals preserved, and do they fit the proposed developmental stage?
- Comparative sample: Are there enough specimens from different growth stages to test the interpretation?
- Other explanations: Could individual variation, sexual dimorphism, or preservation account for the differences?
These are evidence to weigh, not a mechanical scorecard. If the specimen is incomplete or lacks useful comparisons, the most accurate conclusion may be that its age or species identity remains uncertain.

An Associated Press report dated 2025-10-30 described a study arguing that a more complete, small tyrannosaur fossil represented a distinct taxon rather than a juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex. The report said the interpretation drew on growth rings and developmental anatomy as evidence that the animal was mature and smaller-bodied. It is a Late Cretaceous example, not direct evidence for the identity of any Jurassic fossil. [c005]
What can be concluded about a particular fossil?
Without a named specimen, its anatomical material, and comparisons with related fossils at different growth stages, no specimen-specific verdict is possible. A general method can show what paleontologists investigate; only evidence tied to the particular fossil can establish whether it was immature, distinct, or unresolved.
